Yes, a new ticket would work, but be aware that when you use it the 14 day window is activated. Those 2 day tickets AP holders get so they can get the dining plan would work great for DL. Non expiring tickets are a good way to go too.
Would a "new" (never used) WDW ticket work just as well for admission to Disneyland. The previous info mentions "leftover" days. Just wondering, we have several never used.
the general consensus on the DLR board is that buying a brand-new wdw ticket and taking it to DLR is not what is intended by allowing you to use leftover MYW days at DLR. but most have had success exchanging wdw days for DLR days on tickets that have been used at wdw - it just takes 10 minutes or so to go through the process. (although post #24 is a bit of a scary story from someone who was an exception.)

if they let you use a new wdw ticket for DLR, be sure to post and let us know how it goes...
. My DH only needed one day and this seemed like a good use of that old hopper that I have been holding onto for 17 years! Kind of sad to part with it, but it was no problem to use and we saved a lot of money over buying a one-day hopper or even a one-park ticket.
because I also bought DLR hoppers and paid for DLR stuff during the same month. I know I will be happy in 2013 and 2015 when I don't have to buy WDW tickets for the four of us, but ouch on the credit card! I wish I could have bought more, but sadly could not afford any extra expenses. Sad that the hoppers have gone up so much since we first purchased them in 2006
