stockings for elderly? have you done this? need stuffer ideas!

I didn't realize that the grandparents have never had stockings -- guess they didn't do that when they were kids.

This year, the grandparents are getting stockings. They are huge , beautiful stockings from Kohls. A lot can fit into these stockings! The grandchildren have all been told and we're stuffing them to the brim!

of course, I'd love suggestions for stocking stuffers. I know grandma is getting a book of stamps for starters!

What a thoughtful thing to do! The stamps are a great idea-if you have one of those Card Mart type places near you to buy a box of assorted cards (birthday, sympathy, get well etc.) is also a useful gift. Paperback books-our library sells used (but like new )copies for 25 cents.

Depending on what they can have, edible treats (candy, nuts) are always good. My MIL always gives us $1 coins to put in the toes of the kids' stockings. Do they do puzzles? Mine like jigsaw puzzles as well as books of crosswords.

My grandma always had a sweet tooth, so we always put her favorite bars of chocolate in her stocking. Always a honkin' big orange in the toe, too, as she always did that for us. Those small purse sized packets of tissues are great as well. You can get some pretty designs for Christmas. Notebooks and pens - my gran loved to write out the family stories. We always put those things that ladies of a 'certain age' use to cover their hair in the rain ... looks like a plastic bonnet that folds up really small when not in use to store in a purse. (My grandma was VERY particular about her hair !)

mini photo album filled with pictures of grandkids, old photo's from years ago

thought jar or box - have each member of the family write down a favorite memory and put in a small jar to put in the stocking. Tape instructions or put a small card on the top to take 1 when feeling blue, 1 a day, etc.

Candies from the good ole days - squirrels are 1 my dad loves but you don't find everywhere.

If your grandma does any kind of knitting or crocheting, you can include a gift card to a craft store, with the promise of a ride to the store!

Maybe her favorite toiletries? My grandmother only used Lady Esther cold cream for years and years. We spent a lot of time looking for it, but we found it so we always included a jar or two for the holidays. Also her favorite hairspray, 'cause as they get older, they tend to only have their hair done every week or so, and they need to keep it up in between.

What you are doing is great! But how old are the grandparents? Are we talking 65 or 95? Are they restricted health-wise or do they run marathons? Are they "active boomers" or in a nursing home? Do they prefer Glenn Miller or the Stones?

Speaking for myself, I'd rather get sun block or a pedometer than denture cleaner. The mileage varies for others.
