Stock up on pork products?

This might be an option for some: https://www.lehmans.com/search?w=bacon. Lehmans sells fully cooked bacon in a can (singles or by the case) for camping and emergency food supplies. They have lots of meats that are canned or freeze dried for emergencies. So no need to worry about power outages, either.

$22 for a can of bacon? Just buy bacon flavored SPAM. I personally don't like Spam but DH does and we have at least a dozen cans that include several flavors.

We do have a couple cans of bacon. DH bought them a couple of years ago. I think he paid $12 for them. We also have bread in a can.

We have a small farm with goats, pigs, ducks and chickens. We have never had to eat any of the animals. We sell them. We eat the chicken and use the duck eggs for baking.

I buy bacon whenever it is on sale or in the 3lb packs at Sam's club and vacuum seal it into 4 12oz packages or 3 16 oz packages.

I am going to Sam's club today and I think I will get several packs if available.

Have people not heard about all the meat plants closing in the Midwest?

We have a local butcher who butchers right on site, so meat won't be a problem for us, but if you don't have one available, if you like pork, I'd get some while you still can.

I have found plenty of chicken. Now Walmart is not the place to go for a lot of meat. But Food City and some other local grocery stores have had plenty.
We don't grocery shop at Walmart, we shop at Kroger. The only chicken we have been able to find is the frozen skinless breasts, which is actually what we buy to grill for our dog, she won't eat much of anything but chicken. Hubby did buy a few pork tenderloins, ham, a butt and a couple of packs of bacon last time he went to the store but that was just because the man was raised on pig farms and loves his swine. Thankfully, we have an upright freezer and a backup generator. Our power went off a few days ago because of bad storms here, it went off around 3 am and came back on around 12:30 pm. We fired up the generator and plugged the fridge into it. Since the freezer is full, we knew it would last for at least 24 hours if not longer so we weren't too worried about it.

You got one pampered pooch!:thumbsup2 Yes we have a generator too that saved us for a few days with recent storms.

Yes, everyone should buy some extra meat right now. Shortages coming our way due to the virus hitting meat processing plants. Should last a month or so.

When we did our original Costco run, I bought the 5-pack of bacon. I have 3 packages left. Our state had one of the first meat packing plant closures. The day after it happened, we went to Costco and I picked up a tray of hamburger, a pack of chicken breasts, and the 2 pack of pork tenderloin (which is more like a 4 pack the way I use it). So I'm good for a month - 6 weeks now. I bought olive oil that trip too, because we were running low. So glad to see that was smart.

We have a tiny kitchen, and a small refrigerator with a small freezer, and no chest freezer, so we can't "hoard." I am trying to stay ahead of the curve, however. I would love to find a pork butt though. I've been wanting to make some crock pot kalua pork but so far have been unsuccessful. or was not in our meal plan that week

I didn't say the option was a good fit for everyone. I said it might be an option for some. If people are going to wait until the middle of a crisis to buy supplies, they'll have to pay whatever the going rate is. The old prices don't appear to apply right now. If people can wait until after things calm down, the prices should normalize (relatively) again.

this.

between some of the meat packing plants closing, and some farmers talking of euthanizing their hogs because they cannot be processed and likely cant afford to keep feeding them... it has a high potential of becoming a shortage in stores. the issue isn't supply, it's distribution.

Supposedly Trump is now telling the plants they cannot close. I'm not sure he can stop them, but he said he is going to.

Having said that, I have been making sure our freezer is full. Did a meat inventory yesterday, and we have enough for a month or so.

Got four more pounds of beef today and two more packs of bacon. The bacon was really low at Walmart.

I was in the mom and pop grocery store I go to, just to buy more meat yesterday. There was something I couldn't find, so I was asking about it. I was told that there are already a few things here and there that seem to be in short supply. But in about another week pork is going to be very very hard to get.

I think I have my dad convinced that we should keep buying meat, and then rotating what we have in the freezer. One thing pulled out, at least one thing put back in.

that’s what we are doing. used the last of the sausage last week so we bought a larger pack and used the vacuum sealer to separate

I hedged my bets on Wednesday and went to the local Mom & Pop grocery store that has a fantastic meat case that looks like a butcher shop. They had freezer bundles on the board, so I ordered 2 different ones. It worked out to 100 lbs of meat (chicken, sausage, pork chops, ground beef, T-bone and strip steaks, chuck roast, stew meat, corn cob smoked bacon) for about $400.00. That was Wednesday's price. When I went in to get it yesterday, the price had gone up $70.00. When I inquired about the price increase, they told me they charged me the price on the day I ordered it. I've got an upright freezer, so plenty of room to store it all.

I had done a Costco run about 6 weeks ago, and that meat was dwindling. When I called Costco (closest store is about an hour away), they said there were limits - 1 pack of chicken, 1 pack of pork, 1 pack of beef, etc. I had just done an online grocery order with Costco, and it wasn't worth the trip just for meat.

Stay safe and healthy everyone!

I would guess if the meat shortage ordeal lasts a few weeks, we will also see it affect pet/animal feed. 15-20 years ago we would have seen it impact pharmaceuticals and toiletries too, not so much the case now.

Oh lawd, pet food?

Oh lawd, pet food?

Possibly, look how many pet food/treat items contain meat, meat meal, meat byproduct meal.

There are a few pet-specific meat processing plants, but a plant can produce both human and pet edible meats depending on a few guidelines. Most plants “double dip” so to speak to maximize profits.

Plus, it’s not like theres a special
rancher->feedlot just for animal feed meat. What goes into animal/pet feed is the leftovers from the carcass for our meat (unless it’s a really older/low grade carcass when they grade it). It may have a picture of a chicken breast or beef steak or whole fish on the bag, but that is definitely not what’s in it.

Part of me feels the pork shortage is untrue. It could be a way for the manufactures to over inflate prices. There are farmer's markets and other places to buy pork. That being said, I would like to remind people of the beef shortage in the early 70s. People were buying panic buying and, dare I say hoarding. Now reports from the late 70s early 80s stated that landfills were filled with beef. Buy what you need. The pigs will always have babies.

ive said it before, but several places do not have farmers markets and other ways to buy pork. we don’t have those for at least a couple hours in every direction. It is a fact at least one processing plant closed due to workers testing positive for COVID. The length of that closure, impacts on other plants, What the govt will do, etc remains to be seen. I am 100% sure that it’s no marketing ploy or conspiracy theory or anything like that.
