Hello everyone
I would like/needing your help or advise on this. Long story short, 3 weeks ago I went in for routine cleaning. I was recommended to have crown for one of my last tooth on lower right. I came back a week later for crown prep, got infection after a week, end up required to have root canal done. Had rct done 2 weeks ago. After the procedure, the throbbing pain has resolved, but since then I been having aching pressure dull pain which is come and goes and lasted for 30 secs or so. The pain get worse with chewing or biting. I’ll see my Endodontist tomorrow, but wanted to hear from you all advice or suggestion. Thank you

In theory, you shouldn't have any pain from the root but you could have some bone pain or residual pain from an infection or trauma. It also could be the fact that your temp crown doesn't fit perfectly. Hopefully your endo can fix you tomorrow. Keep us posted.

Thank you for quick respond. Will definitely posted tomorrow after consult with Endodontist

Years ago, I developed an abcess under a crowned root canal. I ended up in the hospital on IV penicillin and other antibiotics for three nights. It was probably the worst pain I have ever endured. I'm glad you're seeing your endodontist tomorrow. You need to make sure you haven't developed another infection. Good luck - I hope you can get some rest tonight.

I had a crown done in February 2020. It was just as COVID was hitting and I ended up not getting the permanent crown until July 2020. The tooth never felt right. I would go days with no pain and then days of off and on aching. Dentist thought it would settle down but it never did. She even had me using a high fluoride toothpaste for several weeks. It just never got better and in March 2021 I had a root canal. Even after that I had several weeks of sporadic aching until it finally resolved. I think sometimes when things get irritated it can just take a while for it to feel better even though you’d think after a root canal it would all go away.

I hope you get some answers tomorrow. Tooth pain is so difficult. Hang in there

Thank you for your advice, I also hope that it just need time to healed. I’m hoping that there won’t be another infection or the root canal has failed. Crossing fingers. I just want this to be over, tooth pain is truly unbearable.

RCT, up to 6 months to recover. Up to 9 months to see if RCT has indeed failed.

I highly recommend anyone getting RCT or having pain with RCT tooth to invest in and get a 3D scan of the tooth. It’s worth every penny spent if insurance doesn’t cover it. I paid $250 for the 3D scan since my insurance didn’t cover it. The 3D scan showed my jaw nerve disqualifying me from through the gum RCT or implant if tooth was pulled.

The 3D scan also picked up a new infection under the twice treated RCT tooth that the regular dental Xray didn’t pickup. Ended up having the tooth pulled, yet did everything in my power to save it. Thank goodness for that 3D scan.

My Endodontist do have 3D scan X-ray. That what he did for me prior performed the root canal. Will probably discuss with him again tomorrow to see if 3D scan needed. Thank you!

It is possible that a root was missed/not completely cleaned out (most have 2-3 roots but some can have more) or there could be lateral roots that are difficult to detect and clean out or it could be that the work on one tooth could have impacted an adjacent tooth that needs a root canal or it could be that there’s a crack in the tooth…I’ve had all these (and more) happen to my teeth over the years…

I just had almost this same issue back in November. Had a root canal and then had to wait for the permanent crown because I had so much pain with the temporary. The Dr kept saying you shouldn't have pain...and I was like well I do so... :confused3 He ended up doing xrays again to major sure it looked like they got all the root cleaned out and then gave me antibiotics because he said it could've been an infection. After a z-pac, the pain went away and I haven't had pain since.

My dentist said the pain should go away in about two weeks but it lasted at least three months (dull pain) for my last root canal. Fortunately, the tooth is fine now. I worried that the tooth was going to have to be pulled.

Since your tooth hurts when you put pressure on it, I wonder if it could be cracked. In one of my root canals, the dentist used rods that were too big, which cracked the tooth.

I’m so sorry you are going through this
I had one that hurt for ten years - they kept saying it’s fine - long story short - it was cracked from bad root canal and infected through my jaw bone - had to be pulled
This one was on bottom right
I have one on top right - root canal - 3 surgeries after - 3D scan - you name it they have done it - still aches off and on just like my bottom tooth did - I’ve been told over and over not cracked it’s fine - still hurts and they have no idea why - I Expect eventually to get it pulled - even though I’ve been told that the pain my not go away as he’s had other patients with same issue who had tooth pulled but pain remained 🤷‍♀️
I do hope your issue gets resolved and you find done relief - I hope it’s something simple like crown needs adjusting for your bite
Good Luck ! Please post how it turns out

Yep - root canals fail occasionally. I’m about to give up a rear molar to a failed root canal that unfortunately resulted in a bone infection. I had it re-treated by an advanced endodontis before Christmas with the hope it would heal but no, I can’t deny any longer that it hasn’t. There are more radical things they could try, like open gum surgery but given the gobsmacking cost, I’ve got to just give up now.

So this is a thing and they are easy to miss, I had a teeny little one my Dr only saw because of the high tech equipment... who knew
Supernumerary roots

I have had my temporary or permanent crowns bug me because the tooth is too high. Since they put the temp on while under the novacaine, it is kind of hard to tell if it is right. They just shave it back a bit and it is much better. But until done, it was always super painful. Now, I tell them to shave the temp a little lower just to be sure of not having it too high.

I’ve had 3 root canals and it took 2-3 months for the pressure to go away and feel normal again.

Yes - it can also be something super-simple like this and here's to hoping for the OP. :goodvibes

Update- I saw the Endodontist today, had X-ray done. He checked my teeth, tapping was fine with when he probed my gum it was tender. He thinks I still have an infection, he prescribed augmentin x 7 days, then come back in 2 weeks. If I still not doing better, he will go back in and clean it again. What do you guys think? Will the abx helped? Or should I just ask him to redo the root canal while taking the abx.? Is it a right treatment? Any advice is really appreciated

Give it time and take the antibiotic as prescribed - unless the pain gets worse - then go back ASAP.
