Still having pain after 2 weeks of root canal

Alternate heat and cold presses. 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. TLC. If you’re unsure, wouldn’t hurt to schedule a second option/consult. Let the experts be your guide.

I had an honest Endodontist tell me this after 2 RCT on the same tooth reinfected again. My only option was a 3rd retreat going in from top of tooth down or extraction. He said truthfully, going in from the top of tooth down would not guarantee the tooth wouldn’t get reinfected again. Extraction is what he personally recommended even though he makes his living on RCT and saving teeth.

Extraction was right for me because I was done after 2 RCT, the years of pain, and wanted a holistic approach going forward. You’ll ultimately know what to do and how to proceed. Hope you feel better soon.
Thank you for your advice. I now not only having the pain but I feel the lump about quarter size on my jaw bone, it hard to touch which I believed it was there right after the root canal but now it getting bigger and more pain. I called the Endodontist, I told him about the lump, and told him still having pain with chewing, biting, especially the pain for worse after finished chewing and last for hours. He said possibility that I might have fracture at the root canal. He said he will have his assistant to call me to come in either Monday or Tuesday. I’m so done with this, everyday and every time I woke up and keep thinking what’s going to be another news for my teeth today. My life has been now just focus on the tooth. I’m exhausted

I’m sorry. That sounds absolutely awful. I hope you get some relief soon.

update- I went back to see Endodontic today, he suspended that I have a fracture under the gum line. No X-ray or 3D X-ray was done, he said none of those will show the fracture so he suggested to have it extract. He also said I’m not responding well to the antibiotics given I still have the lump at the jawline. I the. said because there was no confirm diagnosis, I requested to have the root clean again and he did cleaned it but if not improving, he will refer me out to oral surgeon to have the tooth extract. What do you all think?

If the infection isn't going away, it's time for extraction. My regular Dentist immediately pulled mine as an ER visit right after nothing could be done at the Endodontist. Drove straight from Endodontist to my Dentist. It was such a relief once it was out. Something he never saw in his 30+ years being a dentist, my tooth itself had a bone kneecap look to it and the post was over drilled where the tooth was cracked at bottom of the posts sticking out a bit. Hence my reinfection and swollen lymph node under my chin.

Did he tell you how long to give the antibiotics to work before seeing an oral surgeon?

I was thinking of you earlier today when my daughter happened to have an appointment with an oral surgeon (nothing related to your situation). I am one who tends to trust the advice of the doctor/dentist so I think I would do what he recommends and if that is an extraction I would definitely do it. I had one in October of 2020. The worst part is the numbing shots (particularly if it’s a bottom molar which mine was). Once that takes effect it’s not too bad. I didn’t even have much pain afterwards.

You’ve been through a lot. I hope you get relief and answers soon.

So I've had root canals done by a general dentist who seemed like he was working with a worn out drill or something because he had to push down so hard that it irritated that tooth for at least a month after, like the bone was bruised or something, it was almost as bad as the pain from the infection. Were you prescribed a steroid after? the steroid helps take down the inflammation.

the other thing...is this tooth possibly one of the upper teeth, on the sides like right behind your canines? I have issues with those from my sinuses, they are attached to the sinus cavity and if you get a bad sinus infection the infection travels down those teeth and can re-infect the tooth, and it still hurts even though there's no root in there.

I’ll be finishing the antibiotic tomorrow. He redo the root canal today, he said follow up after 2 weeks, if I still having pain, then will see oral surgeon for an extraction.

Good luck - we’re all ‘rooting’ for ya (pun intended - thought you might need it)…

I had intense pain after my first root canal in my teens (bad enough I developed an intense phobia of dentists). I remember writhing in bed from the pain. And then on and off aching for the next 20 years (bad enough I would sometimes stuff cotton in my mouth and clench down to relieve the ache). Finally talked to my new dentist about it and she referred me to an endodontist.

He told me the original dude missed a couple of roots. So no wonder I was getting periodic infections. He was super gentle with me and redid the root canal. I had no pain post surgery (the painkillers worked as promised) and a completely smooth recovery. I was shocked that it was possible for a root canal to be basically pain free. He followed up with me for free for something like 2-3 years afterwards to make sure all was good.

Update—- it been almost 2 weeks now after I had the second root canal. The pain has improved like 85%, I’m now having mild ache, tender and pain with chewing and it could last for like 20 minutes after eating. Other than that I feel pretty comfortable. I also was seen by oral surgeon 2 days ago, he said no infection noticed also calf see the fracture, even if there is he still can’t see it. So he said I could wait out for couple weeks before have it extract. My total cost for procedure is $4k, my insurance does not covered for dental implant. What do you all think? Should I wait out and see?

If my dentist/oral surgeon said "let's wait" I'd wait.

It's really best to not lose the tooth if at all possible as it can cause other bone structure problems to have no tooth in a spot there should be one.

Yes I agreed but he also said if endodontic recommended to remove it then that tooth is no longer good. These people don’t have a definite answer arghh
