Still allowed to gate-check booster/car seats?

I am bringing 2 of those full-back booster seats for my 4 and 7 yr olds to use in the rental car and I asked USAir about gate checking them so they have less of a chance of getting damaged. The very nice woman I spoke to didn't seem 100% sure that you could still gate check these types of items, so has anyone done this in the past few weeks?
