~*~ Stick It! A thread for Gymnastics Parents ~*~

My dd will be competing level 8 starting Dec 08. Her biggest problem at the moment is the full on floor. She has done it in the past, but she is have a major mental block with it right now and I am hoping and praying that someone will come along and help her out (luckily she has plenty of time to get it.) She has her FHS-FLO-FT pass and I am not sure what else she will be doing, but she has to get the full and then she will have another pass to do.

She looks great on bars, her clear hip to handstand looks great and then she does 2 giants and then flyaway. Her pirouette is a little sketchy, she just needs to get it more consistently, and she will before comp time.

Beam is great. She has all of her skills, BHS-BHS series, switch leap, she can do 1/2 turn jumps and is working full turn jumps, but can't compete them in L8, she has to wait until L9 for full turn jumps. She has her BT on beam and her dismount is a RO-BT, maybe she will be able to upgrade to a LO before comp season starts.

Vault - she is progressing. She is working the Yurchenko. She does all the drills including the BHS over the vault. She will continue to work that and hopefully in due time she will flip it.

That's my update! I am confident that she will be ready come Dec. All I hope is that her first meet doesn't fall on the weekend that we are planning to go down to Disney 12/4 - 12/8. If it does, she has already been told that she will miss the meet, per Mom (don't know how the coach will feel, but oh well.) Dd is ok with this as we discussed before I booked the trip.

DD got skipped up from level 2 to train level 4 two weeks ago. She's doing pretty well so far. Bars are her strongest event. She has her cast-squat on, jump to high bar, and the long hang pullover. She's pretty good on the tap swings and just needs practice on the underswing. The only thing holding her up right now is that pesky front hip circle. Hopefully she'll get that soon.

The vault is the same as last season except that they now have to use the vault table so she's got to work on getting higher off the spring board.

She's doing pretty well on floor. Still needs her ROBHS (has the RO part but not the BHS) and needs work on the front walkover.

She's doing fine on beam except that she still needs to move the cartwheel and the side handstand w/ 1/4 turn dismount to the high beam. Everything else is good.

She doesn't compete again until January but in our gym, they need to have the skills w/o a spot by the end of July. It doesn't matter how ugly the skills are but they have to be done without help. Keep your fingers crossed for DD!

DD moving up to Level 6 in a couple of weeks, she has all of her skills but the Free Hip Circle, and I'm sure she get it soon.

DD Is training 8. Most of her teammates are doing both 7(again) and 8 next year but she is only doing 8. I don't see the need to do a double season when she achieved a 37.025 at level 7 states. SHe has all her 8 skills except a consistant full. I hope she will have it by december which is when her season starts. SHe is enjoying learning new skills and comes home every day excited about it.This is my favorite time of year.

Are your girls or guys off to summer camp?

Lauren is attending Lake Owen in Cable, WI. The gym has met VIP status with 21 attending. Our coaches are coaching along with one of the moms, I am working in the camp store, and one other mom is a counsler. I am excited to see what new skills she will come home with.

Barb will you and dd be there for the whole summer?
My dd is going to IGC for a week with her best friend. She is so excited.I haven't told our head coach yet. She will not be quite as excited LOL

No we will be there for just one week, July 27- Aug 2. Since our coaches coach there they will close the gym for a week. They typically go the week of the 4th, but they wanted a week that the boys team could also go.

Lake Owen is a special place for our coaches as that is where they met. (young married couple)

That is great. It sounds like a lot of fun. When we went for the open house at camp I told my daughter she coudln't go this year because I wanted to go instead.:rotfl: SHe was not amused..

No camp for dd this year. HC/O doesn't like them going, so if they went if would have to be one of the 2 weeks that they have off. Well the first week off (first week fo July), I want to go down the shore with my family and the other week at the end of August, we will be in Disney.

Oh well, she'll survive..... ;)

Sorry to come to the party so late. I'm never over on the community board but someone directed me here. :wave2:

I've got two DD8 practicing level 5 competing Level 4 next year and DD10 Level 6 next year.

They'll be at IGC this summer and to the pp, their coach isn't thrilled about it either.

They also do travel soccer and piano. DD10 will start school basketball this year also.

We were down to the Sandollar Invitation at WWS in January. I would reccomend that event to anyone. We had a great time at WDW with her gym friends and competed. I doubt we'll be back. Sometimes I wish you could sign up for a meet as an individual.

I'm going to go back and read some more pages. I'm going to try to get through the whole thread.:goodvibes

Welcome to the thread:thumbsup2 . Bless you for keeping up with 2 dds doing gymnastics. I only have one in the gym and have a hard time juggling.
ETA: I still don't envy you trying to keep up with two season and schedules. Gymnastics is so demanding.

Hi MaryKatesMom :wave2:

Wow - 3 in the sport, I couldn't do it. As Dis4me said, I have a hard enough time with just 1.

Welcome!

Off to Camp Woodward PA (sister camp to Lake Owen) for week 7 (July 13-18, We have at last count 70 girls going and alot of the parents work there also.
If anybody has the USA Gymnastics Mag (Jan/Feb) My daughters team is in the Woodward add on the last page - the big team on top - Aim High Gymnastics

Has anyone attended IGC Camp in PA? We went there to the open house today and it seemed wonderful. Just curious if anyone has any experience

We did IGC last year and are doing it again. We we got there my DD9 begged to go for 3 wks. We we picked her up after the 1 wk she fell asleep after saying, I'll just do 1 next year. This is a child that never napped ever.

She loved it but we made the mistake of going with another girl in the gym that has some serious behavioral issues because I wanted her first away experience to be with a "friend".:sad2: My mistake. She made it her business to make DD9 miserable.

That's cool, I'll have to see if I have any of the older magazines and take a look.

FYI - My dd is in the current USAG magazine (May/June) in the Faces in the Gym section. She's the one doing the split holding her back leg in the black & white leo. She's toward the bottom of the page on the right! She's very excited.. :yay:

Sorry! My post was confusing I only have 2 in the sport.

My problem they are completely different girls. DD10 is about 55 lbs absolutely no body fat with 6 pack abs and DD8 is probably around 75lbs and taller built like a russian wrestler, no waist.

The DD8 was having some problems and it is a miracle she's still in the sport. I think with out her BFF she would have given it up. I nicknamed the two of them the "Chalk People". I think they only go to play in the chalk bowl.

DD10 had a great year. She missed going to States by 0.25. Maybe if Mom remembered her dowel grips and didn't let her go to a birthday sleepover the night before BUT it did save me hundreds of dollars and we didn't miss soccer of good friends 1st Holy Communions.

DD8 is practicing Level 5 but only competeing Level 4. She really improved this year. She used to be dead last in everything but now she places on Vault.

I just got that one the other day, Checked her out --she so cutie And give her congrats on be State Champ:thumbsup2

I agree about the college meets. They are so high energy and fun. One thing that is great for the girls to see is that the gymnasts are real women with real womens' bodies-breasts, thighs, curves. When we watch the Olympics on TV, we get the impression that to be good you have to be 4'8" and weigh 70 lbs. It's great fun to see other body types-their bars can be so powerful because they have so much strength!

Yes!!!! This is what kept DD8 in the sport. We went to the Big 10 meet in Penn state last year and this year we went to the Colligate sectionals at Penn State. Georgia won that and then went on to win nationally.

I'm not sure I would have pushed her stay (added quite a bit of privates) if I hadn't seen how muscular and large the college gymnasts were.

PS. I'm so happy to be here. Their HC discourages parents from socializing. They give "scholarships" to some kids and not others. It is need based so the worst gymnast on the team pays less than the best. Very complicated. Plus, the HC has favorites and that rubs me the wrong way.

When does your gym require sign up and deposits?

Ours had to be in the first week of Febuary. This is what I noticed this year. Three things happened:

1) You signed up immediately and paid your deposit. Ignored. (Us)
2) You declined and she was sure you weren't coming back. Written off. (My friends daughter)
3) You declined but kept saying you weren't sure. Given a lot of attention and discounts.

This was in Febuary and my friend was told that she needn't bother attending the optional day since she wasn't going to be on team. The two level 6's that could no longer afford to be there were given so much praise and attention in the hope their mothers would change their mind all you would hear at practice was "Haley and Courtney" over and over.

We're a very small team overall so it is very noticable.

At dd's gym, once you are on team you are always on team unless you give your 30 day notice or the HC/O tells you that your dd is no longer welcome.

I feel that the new yr starts in July/August, when we pay for our new comp leos and USAG #.
