Steve Irwin (crocodile hunter) dies..........

Nutsy, everything I've found said they are filled with poison, here are a couple -

"'70 percent of stingray victims go unconscious as a result of the poisonous venom,"'

"Each snorkeler is given safety instructions on how to avoid the tail area where the ray’s poisonous barb is located"

"The sting of the stingray is a well-crafted, trauma- and venom-inducing apparatus that has survived the test of time over millions of years. Since it is not used for food gathering, its purpose may be purely defensive."

Maybe since there are over 150 species it just depends on which type stings you.

Thanks for that. I was always under the impression that it was, but what I found on the net said different.

Mom2Angels you are right

... just found this

Stingrays

Stingray injuries mostly occur when a person steps on the ray, either when climbing out of a boat in shallow sandy water or when running into such water. The stingray whips its poison barbed tail around, lacerating the foot or lower leg, sometimes leaving a portion of the barb behind. The mechanical injury can be severe, with fatal cases due to direct heart or bowel puncture or transection of major limb vessels. Nerve or tendon damage can occur. The venom causes intense local pain, which is heat susceptible, hence the value of hot water immersion as first aid. Always check the wound for foreign bodies, allow to close by secondary intention and consider prophylactic antibiotics. The severe local pain may require major analgesia or regional nerve block. There is no antivenom.

What a terrible tragedy. He will be missed :(

THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.

It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest and reportedly into his heart .

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.

The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) was called about 11am (AEST) and an emergency services helicopter was flown to the crew's boat on Batt Reef, off the coast near Cairns, with a doctor and emergency services paramedic on board.

Irwin had a puncture wound to the left side of his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns.

Tasmania Police this afternoon confirmed his wife Terri was travelling in the state at the time of the tragedy.

A spokeswoman said police had made contact with Mrs Irwin and "passed on a message relating to the death of her husband".

The Irwins have two children - a daughter, Bindi Sue Irwin, eight, and a three-year-old son, Robert (Bob) Clarence Irwin.

Steve Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".

In an sad twist, it has been reported that his new documentary was aimed at demystifying the stingray.

Irwin's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.

He has also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.

Tributes have already started pouring in for the larger-than-life character.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Mr Irwin for his work in promoting Australia.

Irwin was heavily involved in last year's "G'Day LA" campaign.

"The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," a spokesman said.

A Tourism Queensland spokeswoman said the death was shocking and paid tribute to Irwin's "enormous contribution" to his adopted state.

"I don't think we could even estimate how much he brought us through his personality and his profile and his enthusiasm about Queensland," she said.

OMG, I thought this was a sick joke at first.

My deepest sympathy and prayers ou to his family, what a loss. He seemed like a really decent guy...a little wild, but a man with a genuinely big heart. Very sad.

As scary and awful as this bizarre tragedy sounds, I really hope he didn't know what hit him.

Flowers laid in memory

SHOCKED members of the public have begun laying flowers in memory of Steve Irwin at his family's animal park, Australia Zoo, north of Brisbane.

Tourists joined locals to pay tribute by leaving bouquets of flowers at the front entrance of the zoo at Beerwah.

Rod Cameron, of Brisbane, said he rushed to the zoo as soon as he heard the tragic news.

"It's very sad and we are very upset. Australia just lost a bloody good bloke," he said.

"We grew up in Brisbane, followed his career. We just thought he was a good guy for what he did for Australia.

"He put us on the map I reckon."

Melbourne's Glenn Batson took time out from travelling around Queensland with friends to pay his respects.

"He died doing what he loved, didn't he?" he said.

About half a dozen flowers had been left outside the zoo within hours of the tragic news as devastated staff looked on.

Meanwhile, radio networks in Brisbane were jammed by callers this afternoon who could not believe the Crocodile Hunter was dead.

Listeners called in one after another to check the news and tell of their own feelings of devastation.

Several callers likened the loss to the death of Princess Diana.

Most described him a lovable "yokel" who was passionate about his job and his country.

The 44-year-old television star and naturalist died around 11am (AEST) today when a stingray barb punctured his heart while he was filming a nature documentary in north Queensland.

Oh my. I just heard. I almost started crying. Steve was a HUGE inspiration to me, and he's the reason that I love animals as much as I do today.

I almost cried when I saw that on the yahoo page earlier. I can not get over it. seems so shocking. I know he will be missed. I feel so badly for his family. Such young kids to loose their daddy. That breaks my heart!

I was praying this was just a hoax. He was so full of life, with the curiousity and enthusiasm of a child. What a tragic loss this is. I'm really having a hard time with this.

Irwin's wife Terri would not close down the zoo, predicted Jim Dalrymple, whose local irrigation firm helped maintain the water supplies to Irwin's Australia Zoo in Beerwah on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

The zoo is the biggest local employer with 550 staff, Mr Dalrymple said.

"I managed an irrigation business in Beerwah and had occasions where I served Steve personally.

I always enjoyed watching Steve, mostly due to his enthusiasm. I was always so afraid he was going to get seriously hurt someday...probably by a crocodile, but never did I dream he would ever be killed. Terribly sad! :sad2:
