Stephen King isn't so scary..........

That was nice of him. I'm a HUGE King fan, but couldn't help but think he could have easily sent them home on a plane. He certainly can afford it.

He spent $12,999 on the bus trip. He didn't like the way 13,000 seemed unlucky, so an assistant pitched in $1.

King makes between $80-$100 million A YEAR. Think what a small faction that little piece of generosity was to his total wealth.

The people who have the most, usually give the smallest percentage of their wealth to charity.

Just my thoughts...

Seriously? How ungrateful.

And just how do you know how much he gives to charity? I guess you have an inside source.

King is actually very well known for his generosity in the greater Bangor area. Among other things, he is very actively involved with the little league program and public radio. He also frequently donates signed items to auctions to benefit various charities, and is involved with Heifer International and the Jimmy Carter foundation. It's also relatively well known that he does a lot of contributions to various causes anonymously. In addition he started The Haven Foundation, that benefits freelance artists and writers. Personally I find it ironic that on Christmas Eve someone would come on complaining that *Sure, he's being generous, but not generous enough.* Somehow I think the families of these soldiers are probably very grateful for his generosity and not thinking "Well..this is nice, but he has so much money, he should have sent us all to Hawaii for the holidays."

2.5 for the Bangor public library, 1.5 million for local baseball stadium .....

He gives back to his own community, as other "famous people" should do, instead of giving to others in another country.;)

I agree with this poster. My thought was, well if he doesn't like 13,000 why go 12,999? Why not 13,001? And I'm sure he does many charitable works, but I think military families should far outway a library at this time of year. And let's not forget that charity can and often is claimed on income tax returns.

I think you need to get over yourself, how can you sit there and judge what he gives. I am sure there are people that disagree with you about what is important and who deserve more money. I do not, but that isn't the point. He was generous, and we really don't know what and how much and to whom he gives. Why don't we all sit back and think about what we can do, and quit judging the rich for what they don't do, I am so tired of seeing people dis well off people just because they are well off.

I guess you have access to his tax returns to see what he gives?

i still remeber when i saw the movie room 1408,it's threaten me for whole year and i can't stay home alone!

I certainly didn't mean my comment as nasty or negative. I was just surprised that they used a bus to bring them home. 15 hours of bus travel is a lot, when you have a very limited amount of leave.

It is a fact that most wealthy give a far less percentage to charity.

And PP it is my right to express my opinion. The donation could have been privately done, but it became a public story. I find it curious that King (or his people) would comment to the media.

Just saying...

You know.. their donation made it possible for these families to be reunited for the holidays. That's all that matters. Could he have flown them home? Maybe. The point is - they made it home for Christmas for one more visit before they get deployed. :thumbsup2

I think everyone should just be happy for these families instead of judging how much Stephen King could have or should have donated.

Stephen King didn't have to do a thing and there might have been reasons for using a bus. And as someone pointed out normally he stays anonymous or tries to but people find out.

This is the type of thinking that would criticize a donated sweater for not being expensive enough.

"An overnight, 15-hour bus ride from Camp Atterbury, Ind., ended at the Brewer Armory late Wednesday morning. (Another bus carrying soldiers stopped in Portland earlier Wednesday morning.)"

They traveled mainly overnight.

Also, "The unit will return to Indiana on Jan. 1." That's not that brief, though I'm sure it feels brief to them. What if they'd been given plane tickets, then the trip to the airport took ages, then they were delayed by no-flying weather, etc etc etc. Might have taken longer than 15 hours...

There were two groups, two buses.

I don't know how many people are in a unit, but...I just don't think that there are enough available flights/seats for those places, on 12/23, last minute, for all of them. Seems a whole lot easier to do it that way to me!

The guy who runs "Operation Community Support — a Bangor-based military assistance nonprofit agency — ... solicited the Kings for money." I would bet that THEY brought it to the attention of the media. That or the people at home waiting for these military members...

“Steve is such a numbers person,” said Julie Eugley, one of the author’s personal assistants. “When we were approached for $13,000, he thought that number was a little unlucky. He didn’t want any bad whammies associated with these troops.”

They asked him for a specific amount for a specific thing, and he made it happen, it seems.

You'd also think that their employer could have afforded it, but the article stated that they couldn't this time (though it says they try to get them home at other times)...

Interesting how the same quote can be "heard" in such different ways...

Stephen King donates lots to Bangor & area. He also lives in a regular neighborhood in Bangor. Nice older victorian house with a few added spooky touches. While there is a wrought iron fence out front, its more for decoration with bats & a spider web theme. The gate for the driveway was wide open the day we went by & took pics. House is close to road & close to neighbors as is normal for Bangor and New England. No huge expanse of property & privacy galore. Car was right in the driveway right next to the house.

As for why not fly, well Bangor Intl Airport is really small & has only a handful of flights each day. Short runway. Smaller planes. Lots of small private planes however use the airport. And there is the "lots of snow" factor up there right now & flights are probably all messed up.

The Kings are beyond generous to the community- I could give MANY examples.... college scholarships, a community pool, baseball stadium, funded most of the pediatric floor of the hospital, it goes on and on.

Merry Christmas to Stephen and Tabitha- Bangor REALLY appreciates all you do!!

I think some people have to look at the bigger picture before they judge. By the sounds of it, the Kings have been very generous.

I'm sure we could ALL give more. I don't make a very large salary but even with what I do make, I'm sure I could still give away more $$. Why not use your vacation fund on a family who is unfortunate? For people who have truly have nothing, we look like Mr. and Mrs. King.
