Stephen King for DD10

Try The Four Seasons. It's four short novellas including The Body (on which the movie Stand By Me is based) and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. Good stories, but I can't remember if there was any sex in them which would be inappropriate for a 10 year old. I honestly don't remember much about the other two though!

You might also try The Stand. I know that sounds strange, but if she can handle the concept it's a great story of good vs evil.

DIfferent Seasons.

I was thinking the same thing! Different Seasons is great. The Body has heavy cursing, but it is a great story. Apt Pupil is pretty intense. The Shawshank Redemtion is great. The last one (I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head) is pretty heavy as well. I read Stephen King books young, I believe 12. But, be warned. Even the tame ones are very adult. You have to know your child and if they'll be able to handle it.

I was reading SK in 5th grade at the age of 10. My mom was clueless to what I was reading.

That said, I will not allow my kids to read SK until they are in HS. His language alone is what I base my decision on. He can be very crude.

I'm a big fan, and have been reading his books since about the age of 12 (I'm 43). You can't compare his novels to Harry Potter! They are much heavier, and usually contain very adult material (language, sex, etc.). They can be very intense and graphic. He is also very wordy, descriptive. My third grader can easily navigate a Harry Potter book, but wouldn't get through one page of King.

Just let my DS12 read The DeadZone by SK. Not sure if he enjoyed it but he hasn't asked to read any others yet.

There is an Author that I remember both my sister and I liked reading back in the 90s (I was 16; she was 12). His name is Christopher Pike and he writes thrillers for young adults. Not sure if he's released anything recent but you may be able to find a good used book website (I like ABE books myself) or check your local library.

OP..James Patterson has a couple of teen series. One is about genetically altered children who can fly. The sreis is called Maximum Ride. He also has one about Witches and another one called Daniel X.

I would have her check those out...

Most SK books include details of child molestation in one form or another. Are you comfortable with your DD reading this and being capable of understanding that it is in there to explain why a character is messed up vs being an accurate depiction of acceptable interactions within families? Are you comfortable with your DD being exposed to that kind of sex at all at her age, regardless of her reasoning capabilities?

How about a couple of his newer ones? I noticed that they didn't seem to be as "intense" as his older ones.

Under the Dome
The Cell
Lisey's Story
Bag of Bones

No, I don't think I can recommend any Steven King book for a 10 year old.

Maybe The Eye of the Dragon.

I could have typed your post word for word. I loved Stephen King at that age, but my mother had NO idea what his books were about. If I saw my 10 year old DD reading his novels, I wouldn't be nearly as concerned about them scaring her as I would be about the vulgar language and sexual content.

I think this is an excellent point. There is no way I would have let either of my kids at 10 years old read Stephen King. He is often very graphic...The Stand has multiple rape scenes throughout the book.

I have to second the recommendation of James Patterson.

I read The Dome, and not only were certain parts pretty gory, but one teenaged character raped and killed some girls, and had sex with their decomposing bodies throughout the novel.

I totally forgot about that part. You are right, not a good book for a kid. :headache:

At 10, I was reading SK. I think the first one I read was Carrie. Once I read the first one, I just kept getting whatever ones were available at the library.
My favorites were the short stories.
