Try The Four Seasons. It's four short novellas including The Body (on which the movie Stand By Me is based) and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. Good stories, but I can't remember if there was any sex in them which would be inappropriate for a 10 year old. I honestly don't remember much about the other two though!
You might also try The Stand. I know that sounds strange, but if she can handle the concept it's a great story of good vs evil.
DIfferent Seasons.
I was thinking the same thing! Different Seasons is great. The Body has heavy cursing, but it is a great story. Apt Pupil is pretty intense. The Shawshank Redemtion is great. The last one (I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head) is pretty heavy as well. I read Stephen King books young, I believe 12. But, be warned. Even the tame ones are very adult. You have to know your child and if they'll be able to handle it.
