Staying at The Fort Wilderness Cabins in August 2006

Our trip is late August and we are staying at the Wilderness Cabins. We're a family of six. Last time (in 2003) we stayed at the All Stars Resort Movies and had 2 rooms. We enjoyed that very much but we wanted to do something different this trip. The cabins always looked nice. Has anyone else stayed in the cabins or Fort wilderness and can give some feedback on it? I've heard the buses are a little complex?

WE loved the cabins, that was our first time having a kitchen, and it was great. The only thing I didn't care much for was the pool area, it seemed dull by Disney standards.

We put the kids in the bedroom, and DH & I slept on the pull-down bed, it was like a regular bed, not a sleeper sofa. We had a car, so we didn't use the busses much. However, when we checked in, we were given a map to get around. It did seem there were a lot of busses.

Our family of 6 stayed in a cabin in January 2005. We love the cabins!!! Alot of people rent golf carts to get back and forth to the bus stops/marina. I wanted to save money so we didn't get one (wish I would have). The bus system isn't complicated, but I do have to warn you, that it is time consuming. First, you have to walk from your cabin to the bus stop (make sure you get a cabin that is only 2 or 3 from the end of the loop. We had a cabin at the very end of the loop and it was about a 5 minute walk with the young kids). Then you wait for the bus to take you to the other bus stop or the boats if you are going to MK. It is a 35 minute boat ride from FW to MK. It wasn't crowded at all, but it took 1 hour from the time we left our cabin, until we walked through the front gates at MK. So, if it is in your budget, either rent a car to get to the parks (except MK), or rent a golf cart to get to the bus stops.

Even with the busses, FW is a great place.

Some people like to request the 2500 loop as the leisure (very plain) pool is there as is the guest laundry. Learn how the transportation works, and it isn't bad at all.

For the cabin bring coffee filters, small cups for the bathroom, salt and pepper, and perhaps a cookie sheet if you think you'd make pizza or Pillsbury type cookies. I personally love the cabins and think you will enjoy them. We have stayed in 2700 and 2100 (our favorite). It really isn't that long a walk to the Meadows or other places. We have never rented the golf cart and have done well with our rental car. I love taking the ferry to the MK. And if you don't mind a few monorail switches, you can boat to the contemporary and take the monorail to Epcot (not a quick trip, mind you).

We just got back from our 1st trip to FW. There were lots of buses running all day. Each has a sign on it that states where they're going, but really, all you have to do is ask the driver when they stop. They are very helpful. I can only see that the buses may become confusing if one doesn't ask. We were there 8 days. Used them several times each day to travel within the campground, to go to the marina and to catch other buses to the parks. Our longest wait was less than 15 min. Usually no more than 5 min.

Our longest boat ride to MK was 20 min, and that was when a wheelchair was boarded. The ride was fun in itself. One night, we caught the fireworks from MK on the way home and another night we watched the light parade.

One word of advice re: the boats... if it's a cold night and you want to go to the Contemporary, take the enclosed MK boat, then ride the monorail to the Contemp. vs the open Contemp. boat. BRRRRRRRR!
