Starwood Membership

Yes it is and if you are also a AAA member you can upgrade your spg to AAApro, which has additional benefits and one of them is an automatic upgrade and 4 p.m. checkout. The info about that is on the spg site.

I can't find where I can inform Starwood of my AAA membership - should I just call them?

Here you go, Jodi:

Already a Starwood Preferred Guest?
Call 1-866-782-7737 and mention enrollment code "AAA" to upgrade your account.

Thanks Nancy! You saved me the trouble! But I should have posted all that in the first place.

Does anyone know how this compares with a business membership?

Thank you!

Can I get upgraded with the basic AAA membership or does it have to be AAA plus membership?

Is the upgrade guaranteed?
I booked a CL room at the Swan at the AAApro rate $262.50. I asked about the upgrade. I was told that I already booked CL and that would have been what I was upgraded to. So basically the rate was all I got. I asked if I had booked a traditional room would I upgraded to CL and they said if there was availability but there are no guarantees. I checked into the AP rates and was quoted 237.50 CL. I asked about the upgrade and was told the same thing.
This just doesn't sound right to me. Seems to me I should change my ressies to traditional and hope to get upgraded to CL. Suggestions/comments?

Plain old AAA membership is sufficient. You will be asked for your AAA membership number when you call.

I didn't see anything about "AAA Pro" at www.spg.com - so maybe that's different than "AAA Preferred Plus."

Thank you again!

I called and they upgraded me to AAApro. They didn't ask me for my AAA card number which is strange but said that a new card would be coming in the mail.

They also said that I could check-out at 4 pm which is exactly what I needed to do on our next visit to the Dolphin - wouldn't it otherwise be an extra fee to stay until 4 pm?

The upgrades are automatic as long as there is availability. By the way I just signed up for AT&T online billing and got 2000 SPG points. You need to have AT& T for your long distance and when you get your confirmation from AT&T you can sign up to get the online billing for the 2000 points. Here is the link:

Free Nights with No Blackouts: Stay just three times to earn a free night.¹ Only Starwood Preferred Guest® allows you to redeem Starpoints(SM) any time you want to go. Other programs say no blackouts, but limit the number of free rooms available. With Starwood Preferred Guest, if there is a room available in the hotel, it's yours!

Free Flights: Transfer Starpoints to 29 major airlines, most on a 1:1 basis. And receive a 5,000-mile bonus when you transfer 20,000 Starpoints to miles.² That's 25,000 miles -- enough for a free domestic U.S. ticket on most major airlines. Starwood Preferred Guest is one of the only frequent guest programs that offers this valuable way to add miles to your account.

Room Upgrades: As few as 1,000 Starpoints can get you an upgrade to a Specialty Room or Suite at participating Starwood hotels and resorts. Arrange an upgrade before your stay or when you arrive at the hotel. View details.

Instant, Paperless Redemption: Redeem Starpoints instantly online, over the phone or at the hotel. No lead time, no paperwork -- unlike other frequent guest programs.
Redemption Partners: Redeem Starpoints for car rentals at Avis Rent A Car, cruises from World's Leading Cruise Lines, gift certificates from Saks Fifth Avenue and pre-paid phone cards from AT&T. View a complete list of partner redemption options.
Faster Earning Options: Turn your everyday purchases into free travel with the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express. See details and apply.

Elite Membership Level Benefits: Starwood Preferred Guest elite levels open the door to additional privileges designed to make your travel exceptional. Reach the elite level of Gold Preferred Guest® with fewer stays than other frequent guest programs. Or achieve Platinum Preferred Guest® and enjoy unique and generous privileges unlike any you'll find elsewhere.

Stay just 10 times (or 25 nights) a year, and earn Gold status. Receive all the benefits of a Preferred Guest® with the following enhancements:

More Starpoints: Earn 3 Starpoints(SM) for every eligible U.S. dollar spent -- a 50% bonus over Preferred Guests, more than any other program -- so you earn free nights faster.

Automatic Room Upgrades: As an elite member, you don't need to redeem Starpoints for a room upgrade --- you'll automatically be given a Preferred Room at check-in when available.

Faster Airline Awards: Enjoy a lower minimum transfer threshold when converting Starpoints to frequent flyer miles -- exchange just 1,500 Starpoints versus 2,500 for Preferred Guests.

Little Extras: Take advantage of a morning newspaper, 4 p.m. late checkout, check-cashing privileges up to $300, and access to the Gold Preferred Guest special customer service telephone number for reservations and information.

the best source for Starwood information is www.flyertalk.com

the experiences over there are different than they are here--most of those posters are very savvy business travellers who take their points seriously. They definitely know the ins and the outs of the program, though. Just do a search for Dolphin or Disney--there's quite a bit of useful information!

FWIW, I think the major differences come at the SPG Platinum level. Starwood treats Platinum members very nicely, from what I understand

Gold is better than AAA/AARP, but the "Preferred Plus" status is better than basic Starwood membership.

Is there a charge for this? I currently have my phone service with BellSouth, do I need to contact them? If there are no long distance calls made is there a charge?

Charges will be determined by the plan you select with AT&T, I chose one that is 10 cents per minute unlimited, it depends on where you live and what packages they have. They will notify your current long distance company of the change. Other than normal phone bill charges, there are no extra costs. Plus you earn more points based on your monthly long distance charges.

it depends on availability, but anywhere from water or lake view, to club level,,,it depends on how full the resort is when you check in.
