I live in NC. Our county has both "year round" and traditional schedules. My DS started K in July on a year round schedule. He will have his first break in September.

Our schools started 8/18 here on this side of FL. Of course they went to school Monday and it was cancelled the rest of the week due to Fay and flooding. I start back at college tomorrow and schools are back in session for the rest of the kids again.

I'm wondering the same thing because we're heading up to Disney on Friday. Hopefully it won't be too bad.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but what is the benefit of going year round? Do the kids finish school at a much earlier age or do they just get more breaks consistently through their school year?

August 7 here in Bama. Ours is different from system to system, but ours was probably average starting time. Fall break Oct 13-17, Spring Break April 13-17 and last day of school May 28..

Basically, they can house more students in a year round school than a traditional school since the school is constantly in use. There are four tracks and each track has a different schedule.

My DS goes to school for 9 weeks and then is off for 3+ weeks or so. He goes 180 days so the same as a traditional schedule. His breaks are in 3 weeks in September, 2 weeks December (which is long b/c then it goes into the normal holiday break through New Years), then 3 weeks off in March and then 4 weeks in June to early July...then his year starts all over again.

We like the schedule so far...makes for easier planning for WDW vacations.

Year round school has a schedule where kids go approx 45 days, then have 14 to 30 off for the whole calendar year. There are several schools in our county in NC that have the year round schedule. They start school in July, have fall break in early October, Winter break the end of December/beginning of January, another break in late February, a short Spring break in April, and are out in June. The kids don't finish their years of schooling earlier than traditional calendar schools.

The benefits are that kids don't have the "summer drain" where they have to spend weeks reviewing and catching back up to their end-of-year levels. They also have less "break in" time getting into the routines of school when they have more frequent, shorter breaks, rather than one long one in summer.

DD goes to a Traditional calendar school, but we would have no problem if she went to a Year round one.

Sometimes its referred to as the "summer slide". They slide down in reading & math skills and have to climb back up before they can make forward progress.

Here in NJ (my kids go to Toms River Schools & I substitute in Atlantic Highlands - for my fellow Jersey DISers) we go back on Sept. 3 - no half days for my kids, but the school where I work they do. To me it seems odd to go back to school in the middle of the week rather that start on a Monday, but I guess there is a method to their madness.

Tomorrow which just so happens to by my birthday. It's a wonderful feeling knowing I get to wake up before 6am. I've been sleeping in all summer. Happy Birthday to me!

Alot of schools in NW Ohio started in the middle of last week.

All ya city slickers get ready to chuckle.

But because of our county fair, we start a week later. Actually, tomorrow!

But if my kids don't stop getting up for a drink of water, bathroom, and just to double check their alarms, they are never going to get up tomorrow!

But being the wonderful parent I am, We are taking our kids out of school the second week (Aug 31- Sept 7) To go to Disney. We hope we find the crowds to be thin, as who else would do such a thing? Bad parents, I guess!

My son starts tomorrow--half days this week then full days after Labor Day.. But taking him out for a week at WDW 9/14-9/19--It's only kindergarten.

Most of Michigan, as required by law can not start until after Labor Day. Some charter schools can begin before that.
