Finally, after almost three years, we are putting in our Polynesian garden!
When we bought our house, the back yard was hidden by vines, vines, and more vines! The fence line between our yard and two neighbors yards was hidden by vines, old lumber, ligustrum and viburnum trees, weeds, etc.
Back in January, after a winter of "let's get rid of those weeds," spurts, we were finally able to clear away all the weeds and overgrown shrubs/trees along the fence line (not to mention all the junk we found in our yard! Apparently it was used as a neighborhood dump, yuck!) We even got into our small section of woods and thinned things out and found some lovely ginger plants growing back there. Eventually they will find a home in the new landscape.
So, yesterday we started! We transplanted three tall queen palms and one baby queen palm. One was part of the original landscape in the front of the house, but it wasn't planted right and never really grew much. I think it will be happier in its new home. The other two were just kind of growing in the yard - one along the fence where we'd been clearing and one near a pine tree in the front yard. They are arranged in the far-right corner of the yard. We also divided a ginger (different type than the one in the woods) and got four clusters out of it. They are planted along one of the fences.
I'll take some pictures later when the sun is a bit higher. I also have to transplant five hibiscus shrubs today. And we have a bunch more plants to purchase and install, but that will be over the next few weeks into next year. It will be a slow process, but at least we finally started! It doesn't look pretty right now though. However, it does feel nice to have started!
