Star Wars Weekend Tips ~ 2011 Update

I've finally found time to post my SWW experience! :)

We arrived at DHS an hour before opening. We wanted to get fastpasses for Temuera Morrison's autograph, but upon arriving we learned he couldn't attend because of a family emergeny (Ashley Eckstein took his place). Instead, we got in line to wait for the opening. A few minutes before they let us into the park, 4 Storm Troopers arrived on the roof - they are really funny and I would get to the park early just to see them. Once we were in the park and the rope dropped, we headed to TSM and got fastpasses for 10:30. Since the wait was only 15 minutes, we decided to ride TSM as well.

Afterward, we headed to Wicket's Warehouse - this place is huge and is full of wonderful Star Wars merchandise. Since we got there early there was no wait to get in. After taking a few pictures with characters wandering around, we headed back to TSM to use our fastpasses. If you want to see any of the Star Wars characters, I would suggest going to see them in the morning. Some of the lines get ridiculously long by the afternoon and as a result we ended up not seeing any other characters.

We then went to get our spot for the parade. We headed over to the stage near Star Tours because we wanted to see the celebrity welcome ceremony that takes place right after the parade ends. We had a wonderful spot that was fairly close to the stage. We stood right beside the opening that leads to Backlot Express. If you want to get a good spot for the parade, make sure you start waiting at least 45 minutes before it starts. There were a lot of people running around looking for spots 5-10 minutes before the parade began, and since there weren't any good places left there were a lot of frustrated parents and children that were trying to squeeze in. Anyway, the parade was AMAZING!! Definitely make sure you get to watch it - it was one of the highlights of our trip.

We also watched the Padawan Mind Challenge. If there are young children in your family that love star wars, I highly recommend having them sign up for this. Everyone looked like they were having a lot of fun.

Since we didn't get any fastpasses for the celebrities, we couldn't get their autograph later in the day. The celebrities autograph stations are set up around echo lake and I highly recommend walking around there while the celebrities are there and when they aren't. When the celebrities are signing autographs you can still get fairly close to them to get some awesome pictures. When they aren't signing autographs cast members usually hand out presigned pictures of the celebrities, which are really neat.

Probably my favorite part of SWW was Hyperspace Hoopla. It is so much fun!! If you want to get up front you need to get there at least 30 minutes early. We were in the middle of our dinner at that time, so we ended up getting there about 10 minutes before it started. Even though we weren't close to the stage, it ended up paying off later. During the show a ton of star wars characters come and walk/dance through the crowd. Chewbacca, Ewoks, Jawas, Kit Fisto, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Tusken Raiders, and Zam Wesell all walked right in front of us. Chewbacca ended up stopping right beside me and started dancing!! Luke also stopped near us and I got a great picture with him. He is my favorite Star Wars character so I was really happy! :) Hyperspace Hoopla is wonderful and not to be missed!! Overall SWW was a lot of fun and I would definitely go back again!

We are going for our first SWW this year, we'll be there for the first weekend May 21-23. My 4yr old is determined that she is going to propose to Darth Vader when she sees him, so this should be a fun event! LOL She's the youngest SW fanatic I've ever seen, and I love it :)

Question: We were planning on attending Friday and Sunday, but I'm not sure we need to plan two days. If we're not interested in merchandise or celebrity autographs, is this doable in one day? For really big fans (dd4 and my brother) is it worth it to do two days?

It depends if you want to do only SWW stuff or if you are going to try and do other things at Hollywood Studios. We went last year and we went Friday and Sunday as well. I will say Sunday seemed less crowded than Friday, but we were able to get many more autographs on Friday. For really big fans, I would say do both days. My boys (they were 5 and 2 at the time) are huge Star Wars fans and it definitely benefited us to do 2 days. The first day we were able to kind of get an idea of what we definitely wanted and the second day gave us the oppurtunity to make sure we saw everyone we wanted to. We did not do any of the celebrity autographs and weren't really into the merchandise. We were there for the experience and to see our favorite characters. We also wanted to do other things in Hollywood Studios as well. (It was our first visit to WDW). I would say you can do it in one day, but 2 would be better.

Just curious why you thought it was more crowded on Friday. Others said the same thing and I would have thought it was the opposite..so at first I was thinking of going on a Friday (less locals to get off work),,,but you are someone that went both days...so Sunday seems to be the one!

There just seemed to be more people there on Friday. On Sunday, it was definitely easier to get around the park. You didn't feel like you were running into people all the time and the wait times for rides just seemed less as well. Many of the rides we went on had little to no wait time. The only ride we really needed to fast pass was TSM. The Sunday we went was the Sunday after Memorial Day and we went the following Friday as well. From what other people told me, Thursday was when FL residents started summer break and DHS was the designated park on Friday for Gay Days. Although, I didn't really notice anyone for Gay Days when we were there. I'm not sure if that had anything to do w/it. But I had the same thinking as you and was suprised to see so many people there.

We also have a surprise trip planned for SW weekends but we will only go to DHS on one day. I was thinking Friday (May 21) would be the best day but now I am questioning that. It is the very first day for SWW this year - is it just too crazy that day? My husband and son are interested in the celebrities, character autographs, and maybe buying a few items (pins, t-shirts, etc..).

We went one day last year. We had not been to SWW before and the kids had never been to the Studios. We managed to do a few rides and got pictures with a few characters. We did watch the parade and had a late lunch at Pizza Planet. We are going back this year and planning 2 days. One day we will focus on Good Guys and the second day we will focus on Bad Guys. If we do any rides it will be a bonus. The difference between the two. $$$ We only went to the one park for the one day in 2009. This year we were gifted season passes. We will be going in April to do the Jedi Training Academy and Rides so that we can focus on Characters and special events during SWW.

We are going to be there for 11 days and will be at DHS once or twice before SWW. So the SWW days will be dedicated to just that. I'm sure my dd4 will want to do the Jedi Training Academy before SWW even starts, so we might not have to do that one again. It just depends on how different it is. I think I'll plan on both Friday and Sunday, but have a backup plan for Sunday if we do get everything accomplished on Friday. Thanks for the tips!!!
