Hiya Disers!! This year my family is going to Walt Disney World from June 14 -24. We have never been to WDW in June before. My brother is a huge Star Wars fan so we are going to Hollywood Studios on the 14th, the last day for Star Wars Weekend. I wondered if anyone had any tips or stories about Star Wars Weekend. If there are enough tips, I will post a list of them. Thank you!! :darth: :chewy: :yoda: :ewok:

Weekend 2 Map and Schedule of Events: http://sww.studioscentral.com/main/files/sww-052711.pdf

**According to Disney's Hollywood Studios' times guide, you can text STAR1 (STAR1 for weekend 1, STAR2 for weekend 2, etc.) to DPARK (37275) to receive the latest information, tips and real-time updates as to what's happening in the park during Star Wars Weekends. **

Arrive at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Early

The official park opening time is 9:00 am, but everyone is allowed into the park around 8:30, where you wait for the official rope drop. If you want an autograph from a celebrity then show up at the parks 90 – 120 minutes before park opening. If you do not want autographs, then show up around 60 minutes before park opening. In addition, by getting to the park an hour early, you will be able to watch the opening ceremony, where the Storm Troopers perform a 15 – 20 minute skit. The Strom Trooper skit is performed every morning at 8:45.

Information

There is an information desk for Star Wars Weekend located across from Drew Carey: Sounds Dangerous and about mid-way between Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Show Spectacular and Star Tours. You can get park maps and times guides, sign up for different trivia contests, and find character appearance times.

Legends of the Force Star Wars Celebrity Motorcade

This is one parade not to be missed! The parade is composed of Star Wars characters, the weekend’s celebrities, special guests, and a ton of Storm Troopers. It begins at 11:40 am near the entrance, travels up Hollywood Boulevard, and turns at the Sorcerer's Hat to end near Star Tours. There is a Celebrity Welcome ceremony right after at 12:00 pm. Make sure you find your spot at least 60 minutes before the parade. Some good spots are by the Star Tours stage (where the celebrity welcoming ceremony and photo-opportunities take place directly after the parade), on the half walls in front of the Academy Hall of Fame - the area with the bronze busts of celebrities (no one can sit or stand in front of you), and on the steps of the American Idol Experience.

Merchandise

During Star Wars Weekend there is spectacular merchandise! This year, the AFI Showcase shop is the official Star Wars Weekends merechandise location and will house all the limited edition merchandise. It is located at the end of the Backlot Tour, and can be accessed by going to the Studios Catering Co. restaurant, then turning downthe path that leads past the restrooms and Monster's Inc meet and greet and will bring you right into the shop. The two stores in the AFI Showcase Shop are Boba's Bounty and Darkside Depot. Boba's Bounty has event exclusive merchandise, including limited edition pins, T-shirts, hats, and much more. Darkside Depot has Star Wars themed merchandise, including light sabers, toys, and much more. Each weekend there are two commemorative Star Wars Weekends pins and a special event pin. Merchandise sells out fast, so when you see something you want, buy it immediately. If you are staying at a Disney resort, then you can have it sent to your resort for you. Since merchandise is in such high demand, Disney sets up a waiting line to get into the store. You can also obtain merchandise from Tatoonine Traders (the gift shop at the exit of Star Tours) and the Prop Shop gift shop (the open air gift shop that is located across from the Studios Catering Co.). If you want to purchase items from the AFI Showcase shop, then you have to get there when the park opens or go right after or during presentations and after the Block Party Bash Parade.

There are two types of merchandise, limited edition and regular:

Regular merchandise: Includes Star Wars Weekend t-shirts and general Star Wars merchandise. These are very easy to find and will most likely not be sold out. To avoid the crowds, try shopping at the end of the day when there is little or no wait.

Limited edition merchandise: Includes special pins, coins, and figurines. These sell out very quickly. If you want limited edition merchandise then you need to get in a waiting line for the store at least one hour before the park opens.

Jedi Training Academy

This is a must do for families with small children. This activity has been modified for SSW and is held several times a day at a special stage set up near Star Tours. You can sign your child up at the information desk in front of Sounds Dangerous. Each padawan is given a robe and light saber and are taught the basics of light saber dueling. Then they get to face off against Darth Vader or Darth Maul. Every child that participates gets a Jedi Training Academy certificate. Approximately the 30 padawans are selected per show. If this is a must do for your child, you should probably head there right after rope drop and get in line. Here is a list of times: 9:30am, 10:20am, 12:30pm, 1:20pm, 2:10pm, 4:15pm, 5:15pm, 6:15pm

Celebrity Tips

If you love the characters in the Star Wars movies, then this is an activity for you! You can have the chance to speak with select celebrities and get their autograph. FASTPASSes are distributed for this event. If you get a FASTPASS, then you are guaranteed an autograph. The FASTPASS machines open at 9:00 am, even for hotel guests, but if you want to be guaranteed a FASTPASS arrive at the park 90 – 120 minutes before it opens. Some of the diehard fans begin lining up at 5:00 am or earlier. There are three lines to choose from, one for each of the visiting celebrities and one for the host. If you get there early, the lines will start forming by the turnstiles (the ones on the right side are usually reserved for this). A few minutes before the park opens, a cast member will guide each line into the park, and you will be taken to the FASTPASS machines. You get one FASTPASS per person, not per ticket. Everyone in your group that wants an autograph has to be in line! Your pass will have a time printed on it and you will go to the designated booth at that time. The booths are usually set up across from Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Show Spectacular, around the body of water. There are usually three autographing sessions a day and last around 45 minutes each. Once all the FASTPASSes are gone, they will start handing out standby tickets. A standby ticket does not guarantee an autograph and some of them won’t be used at all. Once a celebrity finishes one session of autographs, if there is still time, they will start letting those in with a standby ticket. A standby ticket can be used at any of the sessions throughout the day.

Characters

During Star Wars Weekend, Star Wars characters are plentiful. Many can be found along Jedi Mickey Avenue (yes, they change the name of the street for the weekend), by Star tours, near the Premier Theater (which is near the San Francisco backdrop), and near the Backlot Tour area. Rebel Alliance characters can be found in the area surrounding Star Tours and the Premier Theater, while Empire characters can be found around the Backlot Tour area. You can see Jedi Mickey on Jedi Mickey Avenue from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm. There is a professional photographer there in case you want to purchase a photo. All of the Star Wars characters walk around the streets throughout the day, so you can still meet many without having to wait in line. This can save you a ton of time, so always be on the lookout for roaming characters. Many of the characters have long lines during the day, so you must be patient. They are all timed because of the summer heat. You may be waiting in line for a certain character, but by the time you get to the front of the line another character might be there. You can always ask a cast member which character will be next, so you don’t end up waiting in line for a character you don’t want to see. Many of the characters are extremely realistic, which can frighten some children. Make sure that you explain to your child that it is only makeup and a costume, before you actually meet the character. It would not be fun to wait for over 40 minutes in line for a character that your child doesn’t want to see once it is their turn.

2010 Special Events

Behind the Force: Behind the Force takes place in Premiere Theater. It takes you behind the scenes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars led by the talented voice behind “Ahsoka” and other guest celebrities. It’s an excellent show for any fan. This show is at 11:00 am and 3:35 pm.

Stars of the Saga - Star Wars Celebrity Talk Show: Stars of the Saga takes place in Premiere Theater. During the Stars of the Saga the two visiting celebrities have a Q&A session with the host, Jeremy Bulloch. Each guest is brought out and asked individual questions. Then the floor is opened up to the audience (5x7 cards are offered at the entrance so guests could jot down a question). There is also a funny preshow with the Storm Troopers. This show is at 1:15 pm.

Padawan Mind Challenge: Padawan Mind Challenge is a trivia game based on Star Wars: The Clone Wars for those 11 years old and younger. Registration begins at 9:00 am at the information desk, so if you want to participate sign up early. The show is at 11:00 am and 5:45 pm on the Star Wars stage beside Star Tours.

Each set is limited to a production run of just 5,000 pieces. Kooky Kollection #7 features the heroes of the Disney-Star Wars universe: Mickey as Luke Skywalker, Minnie as Princess Leia & Stitch as Yoda while Kollection #8's ink goes a tad darker with Goofy as Darth Vader, Donald as Darth Maul & Stitch as the Emperor.

Disney Design Group Artist, Cody Reynolds will return for an encore signing of the new Kooky Kollections on Friday, May 28, 2010 at The Writer's Stop at Disney's Hollywood Studios from 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

Hyperspace Hoopla

The Star Wars Weekend closes at 7:00 pm with Hyperspace Hoopla. The show starts at 7:00 and lasts for around 25 minutes. During the show there is singing, dancing, Star Wars Characters (including a special surprise guest), and silly Star Wars jokes. Many of the characters go into the audience during the show. The last dance is Y-O-D-A (to the tune of YMCA). Make sure you arrive early – a good time is during the last Jedi Training Academy show. Find a spot between the stage and the restaurant next door. Once the show is finished, the ropes will be dropped and you can stand close to the stage. It’s a lot of fun and a great way to end the day!

Have Fun

This may be the most important tip to remember! You probably won't be able to see and do everything, so pick your favorite things and have a wonderful time! Star Wars fans of all ages dress up as their favorite characters and bring their lightsabers. Just remember, don’t hit anyone with your lightsaber, even if they are really annoying and decide to cut you in line (hehehe ).

Star Wars Weekends are a lot of fun and certainly one of my most favorite special events at Walt Disney World.

There are lots of great activities and many characters available for photograph opportunities throughout the park.

Some of the highlights include:
  • Star Wars Parade: Each day a parade is held (usually around 11:00 AM) that includes the Star Wars characters and the special guests for the weekend.
  • Character Greeting and Photo Opportunities: These range from Darth Vader and Jedi Mickey to some of the lesser known characters such as Aurra Sing and Storm Troopers.
  • Behind the Force - This is a special presentation conducted in a theater to give you insight about the making of the Star Wars movies from people that were involved. Last year they showed clips from the then unrealeased Star Wars: Clone Wars Movie.
  • Interviews: Also held in a theater, these talk show format interviews are conducted by the guest host for the event (this year it is Jay Laga 'aia (Captain Typho)). He interviews the other special guests for the weekend and they share their memories of making the Star Wars Movies that they were involved in.
  • Hyperspace Hoopla - An end of the day combination comedy/dance party involving Star Wars Characters.
Get to the park early to see the Storm Troopers perform a funny intro at the rope drop/park opening.

Have a great time!

Do you think a 6 year old would enjoy this weekend? We were planning another day at DS, but really hate to miss this event since we will be there. Are the rides extremely crowded or is it mainly one area that is crowded? Do the characters walk around the entire park or just one area? I'd love more advice and tips! Basically I just want someone to decide for us whether to go on a Star Wars weekend or another day! LOL! Thanks!

this is a great event for kids, the only ride that might see a change in crowd level is Star Tours, other than that the park's crowd level is as usual. The characters are located mainly around the echolake/commisary/star tours/muppets area, so I would say half of the park. there a re characters that have set times that they come out and others that just walk around the different areas.

alot of good tips and reports there.

I think your 6 year old would have a great time. my kids loved it at that age (and they still do). One event that you may want to check out is called: Jedi Training Academy. Several times a day at a stage near the Star Tours attraction a Jedi asks for young volunteers to participate in a jedi training session. About 30 are chosen each time. the young padawans are given a robe and a light saber and learn the basics of light saber dueling. Then they get to face off against Darth Vader himself. It is a lot of fun for the kids.

Star Wars Weekends are really fun. All of the Star Wars characters that are walking around in conjunction with all of the park guests that wear their Star Wars costumes really add to the normal Hollywood Studios visit.

I hope this helped convince you to check it out.

Maybe I missed something here... but did you say your 6 year old likes Star Wars?

Yes, the park is fun regardless and yes there is still plenty to do that isn't Star Wars related. But it is more crowded than normal and if he doesn't recognize any of the characters outside of the Disney in Star Wars garb it's kind of a pot luck thing.

If you are comfortable with it, let him/her watch the orignal Star Wars and see how he takes to it. When my daughter turned 7 we were down there and she had watched all the movies by that point... she LOVED it... particularly the parade...

The only bit of advice I have though with a 6 year old is if you are going to stand in line for a photo, make sure you let your child see the character before hand... my daughter actually loved meeting Darth Maul but another child about her age freaked out when he got to the head of the line ( after about a 40 minute wait ) and didn't want to go near him.

We found that quite a few characters sort of roamed the streets and were great for photo's so if you aren't looking for the true stars of the movies, you can still enjoy meeting a dozen or so without having to wait in lines...

The ones below were all free roaming characters or had lines with literally less than 10 people so the wait was 2 or 3 minutes.

The first one came out in an area maybe 20 kids were just hanging out and she just followed them, while they all ran away... none were really freaked out but they certainly didn't want to go near her, it went on for about 3 minutes then my daughter walked over and just stood in front of her, she got down like that and stared in her eyes and my daughter just smiled at her... we ended up with 20 or so different pictures because everytime my daughter said thank you and started walking away she pulled her back and posed a different way... It was one of those great Disney moments...

But obviously... certain characters are a must for a kid... in particular... Chewie.... I don't know how it was last year or will be this year, but 2 years ago Chewie was the fastest line of all the big characters... I'd put him right up at the top of the list of must gets, particularly with a small child as the difference in size just works well and you can never get that back "next year".

Remember... step one... watch the movie...

I'll be there on the 14th as well:) This will be our 3rd trip for the Star Wars weekend although we arent huge fans, but since Clone wars my DS 8 is now realy looking forward to it... my advice is to devout that day to just the Star Wars activities and dont miss the parade around 11ish!

Have a great time!

Thanks!! We will definitely get there for park opening. Is the park really crowded at opening? Should we get there around 45 minutes to an hour before it opens? We have a car, so we can get there as early as we need to. I can't wait to see the parade! Do they have the Block Party Bash parade as well later in the day? Thanks for the info about Behind the Force, the Interviews, and Hyperspace Hoopla. I didn't know about any of these and we will try and make time to see each of them. Oh, and thanks so much for the link to your blog!! Lots of great info on there!! :)

That's really cool that the characters walk around with the guests! Even though we don't have any "young padawans" in our group, we are definitely going to check out the Jedi Training Academy. Thanks!! :)

I love the pictures! So adorable!! That's great to know that the lines aren't extremely long. I figured there would be at least a 30 minute wait for each character. I'll be sure to watch the movies again before we leave, it will make the trip much more special! Thanks for the info!! :)

Can I pop in a SWW question, too? I keep reading about these long merchandise lines. All I want is a Star Wars Weekend shirt for my son. Am I going to have to wait in one of these huge lines for that? Or will I be able to get those anywhere around the park?

From my memory.. there were plenty of things like that around the park... pins as well... but the store that sells the limited edition dolls, coins and statues etc gets very very crowded... Thats the serial numbered type stuff... but a t-shirt you should be able to find.

We missed SWW last year, but the year before we were there for the second week-end. My niece and her family were there for the first week-end. The first week-end her husband stood in line for merchandise for 4 hours, the second week-end I walked right in and got what we wanted and walked out. They do have special edition pins (two for each week-end) that are only in the "special" merchandise area. Does anyone know where the merchandise will be this year?

I've read in multiple places that the first weekend is usually the busiest for merchandise, especially on Friday. We probably won't wait in line for hours, so we are hoping it won't be that busy, especially since we will be there on Sunday. Thanks for the info!!

Hiya! I just wondered if anyone had any other tips. I am compiling all the information I have found and will post a list of everything later today or tomorrow. Thanks again!

Hi again. I just wanted to let everyone know that I posted a list of all the tips in my first post. I hope they help you plan your day! :thumbsup2

How do they do EMH with SWW? I will be there in first weekend in June and they are having EMH. Any ideas on how this works??
