Star Tours and SW characters

Hey,
My DS (age 4) is a big Star Wars fan and has not stopped talking about going on Star Tours since we told him about the trip. My question is: are there any Star Wars characters hanging around that he will see or is that just for Star Wars weekends? Also, is there a gift shop with stuff for the ride? My daughter is excited about the whole Disney "thing", but my son is stuck on Star Wars!

There certainly is a gift shop. It has a nice selection of Star Wars related merchandise.

I don't often go to MGM Studios, so am not the best resource, but I can only recall seeing the SW characters during the Star Wars weekends. There are many of them then!

There is a good gift shop there. I always send my super-Star Wars fanatic brother something from there!

The characters usually just appear during Star Wars Weekend. If you're lucky you may see Chewbaka outside the Star Tours building, but he only appears there on a very random basis. Luke, Leia, Darth Vador, and R2-D2 do appear in the Stars and Motor Cars Parade at MGM in their own Star Wars themed car.

We went to Star Wars Weekends last summer. My DDs are Star Wars-obsessed as well, and they really enjoyed it. Star Tours is a great ride, and it it empties into (of course!) the Tatooine Traders gift shop that has a lot of Star Wars stuff you can't get anywhere else. Seeing the characters was great - DDs were almost as impressed by the CMs dressed up as Luke & Leia as they were by Mickey & Minnie! They did a great job acting in character - we have a fun picture of Darth Vader putting an imaginary Force chokehold on my DD10... he also looked so real (and frankly pretty scary) that DD6 wouldn't go near him! LOL

If you can get there for the Star Wars weekends, your son will love it. They haven't announced 2004 dates yet as far as I know, but they will be 4-5 weekends in May and June if it's like last year.

During the Star Wars Weekends, it is crawling with Star Wars characters. Forgive me if I miss a few, but this is who I remember seeing:

R2D2 and C3PO had statues outside that you could take pictures with.

I can't remember what they are called, but those bike things that Leia rode in Return of the Jedi when she was being chased by the Stormtroopers through the woods, are set up right across from the ride and you can sit on them. Be sure to get a picture of your son on one, they are great! My son goes crazy in that gift shop-they have so much Star wars stuff!! This is still a favorite ride of ours.

Actually, during the weekends, they have so many characters out that the area with the speeders are used for greetings. There were, if I remember correctly 7 separate areas with different backdrops for your pictures with the characters. Amidala was at the palace, Darth Maul was in the industial looking area where he fought Qui Gon and Obi Wan, Mace Windu, Kit Fistko, and Shaak Ti were in the Genosian arena, Han and Chewbacca were next to the speeders, don't remember what was behind Luke and Leia, Jango, Boba, and Zam were below Tatooine Traders, and R2D2 and C3PO had a Star Wars Weekend backdrop from just outside Uncle Owen's house. They just made the pictures look really cool. Also, there was a place where there were large plastic boxes and you could go inside and pose as your very own Star Wars action figure!
