Standing room only on buses

Okay, I disagree.

We will never board a bus knowing we will not have a seat. If we see it is standing room only, we will politely stand aside and let anyone board who is willing to stand on the bus while we wait for the next bus. The lines are wide enough so that we are not in the way to let anyone pass us (they always happily do!) and it does not hold up the line. The next bus is usually right behind by minutes. We do not board a crowded bus and expect anyone to give up their seat. Everyone is tired and deserves a seat. It is not just women and little kids in those seats on the bus, it is many tired men as well. Take a look around next time. If you do not mind standing, by all means board the bus. Otherwise, do as many tired families do (yes, even with babies) and wait for the next one. This IMO, is not about common courtesy as it is common sense and personal responsibility. Everyone is on vacation and the destination is our resort beds.

Very well said. I 100% agree with you. We often will wait for the next bus just to insure a seat. It amazes me that people will complain about standing when they also have the option of waiting for the next bus. With so many people with hidden disabilities, it also amazes me how everyone can be so judgmental.

I just wish they wouldn't allow anyone to stand on busses. They should just get more busses.

I apologize if I'm repeat anything that's been said, I haven't read every single post in this thread, but with that said people stand on public transportation everywhere, whether it be a bus or train. If they were to not allow standing on buses, then Disney would end up spending a wholeee lot more on buses and that would not come without some sort of effect on prices within WDW. And like others have said, if you really want/need a seat there is always the choice of waiting for the next bus and ending up in the beginning of the line.

Doesn't anybody get it if you have a severe back problem you may well have rented a wheelchair all day, standing is agony maybe and to wait for another bus !! I guess my standards of mannners are reflected in my sig. That's how I was raised and that's what I saw and taught that to not be polite was down right rude. You people are coming up with all sorts of excuses for a mean spirit. I'm not meaning thosre with hidden disabilities But you could say why you're remaining sitting. Like 'I have a bad knee or I'd gladly give up my seat' That's both polite and understandable,I wouln't expect to be given a seat because of my gray hair, I' m healthy can out walk most in my family [again that upbringing] I' ve also read how people cut and push sounds like these buses truly are cattle cars. Wish the budget would stretch to rental or cabs but it won't. So I'm hoping that at least 1 person reading this has a change of heartand the world of chivalry scores one!

I do have a bad back, had surgery, probably will need another one some day. I'd rather wait 15-20 minutes for the next bus and seats, then take a chance of flying on the bus and possibly getting hurt worse. Plus, bad knees to boot. I wouldn't dream of anyone giving me a seat, due to that. I wait.......

And my son's will have seats too, because they also have "reasons" one has a club foot and doesn't have the greatest balance and the youngest has Severe's in both feet (fractured heels more or less) and I won't allow them to stand on the bus. We are able to get through the parks with many breaks, and are willing to stand and wait for another bus so that I don't have to worry about them. And they won't sit on my lap, they are 5'11" and 5'5" and over 125 lbs. My 5'6" frame couldn't handle it. Plus, at the end of our day (we normally head out by 5 or 6 p.m.) after as much as I sweated from the heat, I'm not beyond plopping on the ground to wait for that bus, even if it means a bit more dirt on my pants/shorts, if I'm in that bad of shape, that I can't stand for the bus. When I see it coming I get up so not to block anyone else.

But to look at the 3 of us you'd never know we had health issues unless you walk behind us and see us all limp to different degrees.

And for the pp, that stated "You would think by the way everyone always talks that people with disabilities outnumber those of us who are healthy.". Well out of my family of 3 , the 3 of us all have some sort of medical/health issues. Wow-what are the odds?

Ok, so you want my medical record?

Surgery on both ankles
Surgery on one knee
2 surgeries on my cervical spine (one was to remove a tumor that was compressing my spinal cord).

OH, and I've always been a klutz, probably a factor in why my knees and ankles are shot. I could fall down standing still.

I just don't consider myself disabled because I know my problems are minor in relation to people who are truly disabled. A little discomfort for a few moments on the bus, to allow someone who is more needy of a seat than I am isn't going to put me out.

I wasn't aiming my comment at the people with true disabilities. I was aiming it at the people who have the mysterious disability that is related to the 12 pack of Ding-Dongs they shoved down their gullet standing in line for the bus, or the fact they spend more time watching TV than, gee, I don't know, exercising.

Being disabled, pregnant, holding a sleeping child (or female, I would stand to let a perfectly healthy woman sit, that just being a gentleman) is one thing, being fat and lazy. . .sorry, you get no sympathy.

Where are peoples manners? Would it be too much to ask for parents to have a child sit on your lap and allow someone else a seat?

We have been fortunate enough to be blessed with a son with high functioning autism. One of the characteristics of an autistic child is their strict adherence to all rules. Our 12yo has been taught since he was very young to give his seat to a lady, or any elderly person. That IS the rule! Every time he was sitting and a seat was needed, he would offer his seat. I can't tell you how many times he offered...but I can tell you how many times in 5 days that someone said OK...2X!! Bless his heart, he was so befuddled because he was doing HIS right thing, and no one else was doing THEIR right thing! LOL While you would have appreciated a seat, there are those that are offered that refuse. So, if someone saw my son sitting, and assumed he was rude because he was sitting while an adult was standing...then they would be wrong!

"hey bus driver-- you missed my stop!" popcorn::

Not here to argue over right or wrong on this subject. My only point, and it's probably been said already, is that if for whatever reason you cannot stand on a bus, why are you not renting a car. If any of my family members had any of the numerous conditions and limitations mentioned, it would be my fault they are standing, not some complete stranger, because I did not rent a car and provide proper transportation for them.

I read the first page and the last page and can pretty much guess at what happened in between. :rotfl2:

IMO, it is not the fault of the riders at all. It is the fault of whomever decreed that the buses have fewer seats and more standing room. I swear the more crowded the buses the faster the drivers go. I have a hard enough time if I am seated and do not know what the people who are standing are enduring. I just try to give them a nice soft landing if they need it but (fortunately :confused3 ) usually it is bumper to bumper people and there is simply no room for anyone to fall. :scared1:

I once heard, with my own ears, a DW bus driver threaten to sit and not take off until everyone in line got on the bus as people were wanting to wait for the next bus and he said he was NOT leaving until his bus was COMPLETELY full. It sticks out in my memory because it was the most unDisneylike behavior I had ever witnessed.

If they can have Utilidoors at Mk why can they not have pneumatic tubes that could transport each family directly to their resort? :dance3:

That reminds me, anyone notice that even going from MGM to the AS resorts that are left and straight down the road they still go all around Robin Hood's Barn?? What is that all about? I can understand some because they do not want to burden the already burdened roads but gosh. :joker:

I guess DW wants us to really get our money's worth. After riding MS, ToT etc. they want us to have the scariest ride at the end of the night. It is especially great at the end of a long day with several screaming tired kids and aching legs.

I still contend that they could let us in for FREE and charge us for an easy way out at night and make more bucks than they do now. :lmao:

Slightly Goofy (who was not that way until she rode a Disney bus after a long day at EPCOT)

I wasn't asking for your sympathy....show me where I was. And your comments seem to be you are saying we are fat and lazy?? We are far from it. But thanks for your assumption.

That's too bad you've gone through so much, it's not easy I'm sure. Just as my kids and I know it isn't easy.

For the greater good of the unfortunate soul whom I might fall on... I will not be trying to stand on a bus. I weigh about 230. If I fall on a mom and baby, or a sweet old man, someones gonna get hurt. Ill wait for the next bus w a seat. And you're welcome for saving you the agony of my pooh-sized but. :rotfl: :bitelip:

The real problem is with the Disney bus system. Sometimes they do a great job but sometimes they stink. I used to think the bus system was fine and then stayed at POR and when we waited for 30 minutes for a bus to MGM and it was ful so even though the driver told us to get on we opted to wait until the next one. Which was 43 minutes later. I have a bad knee, an arm with a titanium plate and 9 screws in it and I don't somplain when standing up. I do think that there are times like when elderly or moms holding babies board the bus it is nice for gentlemen to stand. But that is just how I was raised. When we are too tired to do the "bus thing" we hail a cab and it is well worth it to us.

OK, so from what I understand so far (and I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong ::yes:: ) everyone visiting Disney is able to spend HOURS at the parks waiting in lines all day and standing to wait for parades to start an hour or so before the scheduled time (unless you're one of those "stand infront of everyone at the last minute" people I've read about on other threads), but the final 10 - 15 minutes on the bus back to the resort are completely unbearable????? :confused3
Perhaps you should rethink your day and leave a little earlier so that the bus ride home is manageable. I'm surprised it hasn't been suggested that people waiting in line for DUMBO should let others pass them in line if they don't have a good enough reason to ride before them. :confused3 (I hope I didn't give anyone an idea there :teeth: )

YUP...they don't call it the HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH for nothin' ya know! :rotfl2:

Well, I seem to find that people are always giving up their seats to people in need. I find that people are very considerate. I do hate when you are sitting on a bus holding a small child and you have a rude person that keeps on bumping into your child and never acknowledges or appoligizes for it.

That aside, my big gripe is the wheelchair situation. Now believe me - I have nothing against them and have sympathy for the disabled and elderly in wheelchairs. But I DO NOT believe that it is fair for them to stroll up to the bus and get right on with NO WAIT AT ALL after we have been waiting so very long - sometimes 1 - 2 hours. I think they should have to get into the line with us. Afterall, the lines are big enough for the wheelchair. You seem to be waiting forever for them to lower the bus - help them on, yada yada yada.

I can see how someone with a bad knee, or whatever, who either made it through the day, one way or another, rented W/C or not, could become more sore towards the end of the day. BTW, anyone who leaves early, misses out on the big finalle of the day (Wishes/ Fantasmic/ Illuminations) Maybe it was worth waiting for for them. No one *OWES* someone else their seat on a bus

When I go on a crowded bus I purposly step on the feet of all the people sitting. I usually try to find the toughest looking guy on the bus and punch him in the face. My daddy always used to say, pick a fight with the biggest, toughest guy and knock him out. After that no one will mess with you.

Stop talking about me behind my back! Just because I am huge, tough and handsome does not mean that I ever learned how to fight. :)

To be honest with you my dh and I have no problem standing -BUT- my kids are young and cannot hold on. We make sure they have a seat. Usually one is on my lap with the other two sharing a seat. I also cannot stand and balance while holding them. Walking through the parks and standing all day are not the issue. It is the fact that the bus drivers drive like we are at the RP Driving experience!!! I am not so tired that I can't stand the 15 minutes to the resort- it's just that sometimes it is a safety issue. We never stay at a bus resort because of this particular problem (monorail or boat only) but you do have to take the buses to some of the parks no matter where you stay. I don't EXPECT anyone to give up a seat for me and we do wait for the next bus if it is standing room only and we do plan our days according to our children's needs so we are not leaving at midnight when the kids are passed out cold. That being said- I really think the main vein behind this thread is that years ago a man would always give up a seat for a woman or elderly person or anyone they thought needed it. It was just the norm. Some of us liked that form of chivalry. Myself included. You don't have to like it nor do you have to give up your seat. It just doesn't make it wrong if that's what your belief is. So- stand, sit, run alongside the bus- just have a wonderful trip! princess:
