Standby on JetBlue

I was just wondering if anybody had experience with this. I am traveling from Newark (NJ) to MCO on JetBlue this Thursday and would like to try standby for the flight that leaves before it. Less than half the plane is currently filled on the standby flight so I'm thinking I'll have a good shot at that. Does anyone know what happens to checked baggage when flying standby?

Generally you have to tell them at the check in area. They then tag the bag as standby. If you get on it gets put on the plane. If you don't it's not SUPPOSE to get put on (but I have had bags make earlier flights I missed :) )

Thanks so much. Any tips on when to arrive. I plan on getting there 2 hours before the flight. There are currently close to 90 seats still available on the flight. I mean that might change and also depending on cancellations/delays but I don't think 90 seats will sell out in 2 days.. Lol

I fly standby often as I like to plan for the worst and hope for the best. Jet Blue has always been great with this. I often end up in Even More Space seats without paying extra when flying standby!

As for your luggage, they do tag it separately. Since your orig flight wouldn't be loading until later, the luggage will be there, tagged and put on a priority list to make the right flight.

And all your luggage has to be able to clear the security checkpoint under 3-1-1 rules... no larger shampoo or deodorant!

What do you mean all my luggage? My carry on luggage, yes. But I'm checking a bag.

This is only for international flights, domestic flights have no restrictions stating the bag has to be on the same plane as the passenger.

You should have a good shot, since half the plane appears to be empty a few days before your flight.

Getting on the standby requires physically going to the airport. I don't know when Jetblue starts the standby list. Passengers can make a same day, confirmed, change for $50. That can be done over the phone. It's possible flights which are closer to being filled could wind up being filled by passengers willing to pay for a confirmed reservation.

Luggage rules for (domestic) standby passengers vary by airline.
