SSR Owner's Thoughts on Hyperion Wharf

MISSING PI!!! PI was a great time for my husband and I from the time we started dating in the late 90's til a few years ago. I may be one of the few here, but I am really looking forward to the Wharf. I think it looks great!I love the look of the fairy lit trees, and the dining along the water. When on our family vacations, my husband and I luv to have a night out or two and DTD and the West Side were all we'd have lately as far as nightlife district within our Disney destination. While in Universal, we'd visit Citywalk. The Wharf will bring a lot of adults looking at adult time, I believe. I really dont think it will be as amazing as PI( Loved Mannaquins, Adventurers Club were sooooo much fun) but as far as an adult outlet within Disney, Im excited;) .

Correction: PI had one Disney Imagineered club that was notable, plus a bunch of other stuff you could find in any reasonably-sized city. Even Comedy Warehouse was nothing more than a regular ol' improv comedy shop, and those are a dime a dozen. It was better than Jellyrolls, as that's only a nickel a dozen, but that's a low bar. True both CW and JR are fun, but not really "special".

The AC was absolutely something special, (Kungaloosh!) but beyond that? Meh.
I hate when posters here sit and wait to pounce on technicalities.
The "spirit" of my post is correct. Pleasure island as a whole was Disney imagineered, with a back story about the island. There is no back story about the mall.

I agree! There was an entire story to PI and the fact that it was gated and adult only at night made it entirely different and unique.

I dug the Meriweather bit too. Really, I did. But 9,999 out of every 10,000 visitors to PI never even had a sense that the backstory was there. The 10,000th knew only because they happened to read a few of the signs. From my view, there was hardly the sense of place-and-time that you get with most of the other environments they've created.

the fact that it was gated and adult only at night
This was important---more so than any backstory. It was also PI's death sentence. It only worked as a gated space. But, gated, it cut off flow between the two ends. The gates were ripped out to improve flow to (and $/sq.ft. performance of) the West Side, and that was the beginning of the end for PI.

It looks like it will be better than what is there now. At least it's not a balloon :rolleyes1

I loved PI and purchased SSR in order to be close by. I really liked the Adventurers Club. Now it just a glorified mall, but it beats closed storefronts.

It has been my experience that folks who were not PI fans, have never truly been to PI. Yes, they may have strolled around to see what it is, but they likely don't know what the Adventurers Club was all about... or for that matter went to a show at Comedy Warehouse.

At one point my wife and I actually considered a SSR add on for the sole purpose of being able to visit PI without having to take a cab or bus (although we always had a car we refuse to drive after drinking).
Obviously, now there is no point in that. I don't want to fly across the country to visit a mall with generic, non Disney stores. I can get that three miles down the road.
That's all it is folks... A mall.

Okay most of you bummed me out since every year we went to Disney we wanted to go to PI (small group of 6 - 8 adults) but we always had our DD's who were too young to leave alone at the resort. When they were old enough PI had closed  We own at SSR and are staying at THV in Feb so it will be nice to have a little more to do in the area.

Okay double bummer I just realized it will not be completed until 2013 :( Oh well

One of my Disney regrets is never making it to the Adventurer's Club. Didn't know if the kids would like it, and just thought we'd get the chance someday.

Don't have a feeling about the new place. We don't spend much time at DTD. If we want to go to one of the Disney stores, we go. Might try House of Blues next Fall, but other than that, we usually don't head that way even when we're at SSR.

I think that would be before the Swan and Dolphin went in...

Ah definitely. :thumbsup2

If Pleasure Island, had been a profit making situation for Disney it would have remained. However just because some truly like a concept does not mean the masses will support it.

Sounds like Hyperion Wharf will be very similar to CityWalk at universal. It seems to be pretty busy over there, so maybe Disney wants to attract that market.

"Early 20th century port city and pier"
Ugh. They took the very worst part of Disney's Calirornia Adventure and duplicated it in Florida.
We lose the Adventurer's Club and we gain more stores and restaurants. NOT a fair trade. I'm not optimistic about this.

By all accounts it was profitable, just not near the expected levels and they incorrectly assumed they would have no trouble making more money as landlords than operators as the economy tanked. In hindsight they never should have shuttered what they had which resulted in zero return.
