SSR Owners Only!

Why did you purchase at SSR?

  • Cheapest entry to DVC

  • Easiest entry to DVC (i.e. financing, paperwork, etc.)

  • To get into DVC, I will never stay at SSR, only other DVC resorts!

  • I love the SSR it is my home resort in every sense!

  • Did not know other resorts were available for purchase

  • Other, please explain if you are willing.

  • Incentive offers too good to pass up

  • DVC Guide told me six okay in a studio with pets!

Results are only viewable after voting.
It was a tie between easiest entry and cheepest entry into DVC. We were looking at a few resales, and when it was boiled down to price per available point (the 12 extra years as SSR) they both came out to about $6 - $7 per point. Then the decision was easy, to purchase resale, I would have to go through an agent, wait on ROFR, FedEx docs at my expense. We called Disney and gave them our debit card number. It was just a lot easier, and I didn't have to pay for hidden extras.

Plus, I really like the look of the resort - I can't wait to check it out at Christmas (but we will probably have to wait until 2007 for that :( )

We purchased SSR as we wanted more points. We own 150 BCV and wanted SSR when we first saw info on it. Purchased sight unseen and absolutely love it. As you can see we are from NY and Saratoga is a beautiful city and I love horses and the race track and thought it would be a good move. I'm glad we did it!

Our intial reasons for buying SSR were:

1. Ease of purchase.
2. Promotional pricing.
3. Additional 12 years.

We bought about 30 days after the points went on sale, and you could only glean so much from the artist renderings provided. Nevertheless, we are happy as can be with the resort and will enjoy many stays at SSR in the future.

Given that DVC has been selling points for about 17 months, but it has only been open for 7, I think only a small portion of owners have been able to visit the resort prior to buying. Hard to vote for the "I love SSR" option when all I had was an 8-page brochure with a map of the property and floorplans on which to base my decision.

No, I didn't vote, LOL. The numbers are surprising even cynical me. A poll looking at members who are already an owner at SSR and from this board where they will tend to be far better informed, only 20% bought SSR for SSR. I would have figured the poll would have been higher as people rationalized their purchase. Figure the percentages for those about to buy and without the benefit of this boards knowledge, to be half what it would be here. So only somewhere between ?0% and 20-25% or so bought SSR simply for SSR. And I'm sure many who voted bought as an add on and were already members, that also would skew the results in favor of SSR. As I acknowledge on the thread that generated this poll, there are gradations of all of these issues and does not take away from the resort itself at all. And I realize that some of the ones that marked other things still may enjoy SSR most. But at least it appears to prove the point I was making, that a significant percentage bought for other reasons than they simply wanted to own and stay at SSR. And unfortunately, that a significant portion of people will be looking elsewhere at the 7 month window, especially in 5-10 years from now once the resort is close to selling out and a portion of the owners at SSR have stayed there a couple of times.
Dean,

I have a different take on it. Only ~5% are saying that they do not plan to stay at SSR. I also think that the poll is flawed in that one of the biggest reasons people purchased SSR seems to be for the extra 12 years from the posts... yet it was not an option in the poll.

Finally, I think your extrapolation of "why people bought SSR" to "Where people will want to stay" is problematic. I think it would be much more accurate to start a new poll, for SSR owner's only" asking which resorts they intend to stay at. Reasonable choices may be 0% (never at SSR) to 100% (only at SRR) in 25% increments.

I do not see any signifcant reason why people who *primariliy* purchased for a particular reason (ie: financing, or contract length) would necessarily plan their future stays on the same criteria.

I do agree the poll is flawed but any poll on this BBS will be flawed as I noted above. Probably the best you could do would be to post a poll for people who bought SSR as their only or first main purchase and before they found DIS. Even that will skew the numbers in favor of SSR. What you'd really need is an entrance and exit poll at the sales center asking the question "If you buy, where would you want to stay" and repeating the question on the way out and including only the ones that bought SSR with the denominator as everyone who bought including resale.

As I tried to acknowledge, many of the other options have nothing to do with whether one plans to stay at SSR or not, only their main reason for buying. Still, only a relatively small percentage on the poll so far chose SSR specifically for SSR. And that was the point some were making on the 800 unit thread and I disagreed with, that some bought SSR specifically for SSR, some did, but apparently a smaller percentage that even I would have guessed. And I still believe the current poll is skewed toward SSR because it includes people who would have bought add ons and those from this BBS who are inherently more informed as a group.

I believe we have enough information for OKW to know that the owners there are LESS likely to stay at their home resort than the members at the other WDW DVC resorts. And since SSR is or will be similar in many ways including size and location, no reason to think SSR will be any different other than the points are higher there than OKW.

Isn't this true of every resort? At some point every member will stay at a non-home resort whether by choice or due to availibility. That's the main reason we bought into DVC -- the flexibility. I'm sure this will be the case with the majority of SSR owners as well.

To a degree. But it's more true at some than others. Plus it has more of an effect when more points are involved. If the numbers and the percentages are higher for SSR (or OKW), it will significantly effect the reservation opportunities. That's not necessarily a problem unless you need to reserve at the 7 month window or after OR want to try non home resorts. And it's how the system is set up. I don't have a problem with it personally, just discussing the ins and outs.

I chose "other," but I guess I could have chosen "easiest paperwork." We were lucky enough to already own at wlv and bcv, and my wife had taken a part time job at the disney store, so there was a great discount that we wanted to take advantage of. SSR was the only one in "current sale" that we could use the discount for, so we added on 100 points at SSR. We just couldn't pass up the price. The extra length of the contract was a bit of a plus, too. But mostly we justed wanted an add-on and it was available. We just wanted the points. That said, we like the look of the resort, and will enjoy staying there someday, even if our first choices are wl or bcv - we are one of those families that likes the "hotel" feel more than the "condo" feel, but after staying at OKW I do get why people like the "condo" feel. We aren't in a real hurry to book a stay there because we figure that someday we'll want to plan a last minute trip and it will the one available. So we'll get our turn sooner or later. Honestly, though, if we could have gotten WL or BCV points with the discount we would have gotten them instead. No regrets though.

Please note that I am not a professional pollster (nor do I play one on TV), and I appologize for my poll's 'flawed' nature. I immediately realized I forgot the 12 extra years, when I (in an apparently 'flawed' attempt at humour added the six plus pets in a studio option - BTW, would the three who selected that option please post?), but I can not 'edit' my own poll, and to do so now would really null any conclusions from this 'flawed' attempt.

Sincerley flawed, and shamelessly bumping the poll up :earboy2:

DW & I currently own at VWL & BCV. We were looking to add on @ BCV or BWV. We could have done that, but with the incentives, it just made sense to purchase @ SSR. DVC really worked with us. Since we already have annual passes, we chose to take the pair of passes for future years. We added on by purchasing 5 separate "130 point" contracts. This way, we get 5 years of free annual passes. Also, they agreed to place our order on out Disney Visa card. so not only do we get the passes, but the points as well. Hurray for DVC and Glenn Wilson!

No reason to apologize, I thought it was put together pretty well and the flaws I see are mostly due to the circumstances and not your choices. Besides, I bet there's not a single one among us that has posted a poll and then wished they'd listed it differently.

THe DW and I are impulse buyers. Needless to say when we went for our presentation in Feb04 we thought it was a no brainer situation. When I got to do more research about DVC, resales, etc etc, I thought I might have been able to squeeze out more points at another resort, but the ease of buying SSR and the extra years just made it that much easier.
WHEN (not IF) we add on, I'm pretty sure it will be at SSR. We absolutely loved everything about the resort. The decor, the location, the sense of "peacefulness", etc etc.. can't wait for the next 50 years of staying there!

I voted easiest entry. My purchase was an add on, and I could have just as easily used the incentive vote. I was thinking of adding on, but when they added the money off, plus the two free annual passes, well SSR it was. I am not sure I will ever stay there, although it is a beautiful resort, and more than likely I will at some point. Realistically, I am happy to stay anywhere on Disney property. :D

I said "other" - we purchased because of the financing, the extra 12 years, and the ease of purchase through Disney. If we had our choice, we would own at VWL (first trip there 2 weeks ago - I am in love!!) but SSR is also so beautiful we could never be disappointed. We also added on through SSR again because of incentives so we fit a lot of the answers listed. All in all, we're just happy to own in DVC.

We found...amazingly....that we needed more points. SSR was readily available in our use year, and the longer term contract made it that much more attractive.
We've stayed there once since it opened, and will be there in ...less than two days now (!). It's a great resort, even w/all the construction. My only wish would be for an increased food choice and another large theme pool.
Love the spa

I'm giving my wife 100 add on pts (SSR) for XMAS. Now I can stay until I'm 100 years old. Believe me, Its not for me! It was either this or a chain saw. I hope she likes it!

Now you have got the knack for finding a fantastic gift! :cool1:

We bought SSR because of the extra 12 years!!! (All the other reasons were helpful, too, of course....)
