SSR owners, did you buy there just to stay at other places instead?

We bought resale and would've taken OKW or SSR...we like the resort feel of both compared to a hotel setting and proximity to DTD. An OKW contract came along first so we bought there, but we look forward to staying at SSR in the future.

Reading these posts makes me think back to how SSR has grown over the years. They added more regular units. They added the Tree House Villas. They added sit down dining with the Turf Club. They added the themed Grandstand pool. Then they added the Paddock pool with another slide and a nice food option. Now they are upgrading the Spa.

I think this is a good example of how DVC has listened to it's clients' comments and improved their product. Only one themed pool for a large resort? Redo the Paddock pool. Not enough counter service options for food? Add a cafe at the Paddock pool. No need for an 11 month window? Add THVs and make them a part of SSR.

I am a happy owner at SSR. I stay at other DVC resorts and love the variety, but I am always satisfied with SSR. And having the 11 month window on the THVs is valuable to me. We loved our stay there in December. And with the expansion of Downtown Disney, we will enjoy our future stays even more.

One other thing I would like to see added to SSR would be a kids club. With the spa and proximity of DTD, I think it would do well. I often thought to do a couples spa visit but don't know what to do with the kids. I also think with the expansion of DTD that will include some new venues for the over 21 crowd, it would help to have a kids club closer to that area. My kids like the kids clubs but I only use them if I'm actually doing something close to where they are. I don't like being too far away.

We did an add on at SSR. I wanted to add more points and we liked SSR. My husband really loved SSR because of the golf course being right at the resort. We enjoy staying there.

Our original contract was BWV. We added on at HHI and VB. SSR was our last add-on.

Mmmm maybe you meant Latest :) that's a nice stable of choices. I see more in the future for you.:thumbsup2

Lots of interesting reasons for SSR purchases. For my family we stayed at Port Orleans for our 1st 3 trips to WDW. A lovely moderate resort, but always SO CROWDED! We would take the boat to Downtown Disney and gape in awe at the mansion like buildings, the little gazebo and beautifully sculpted walking path along the River at SSR and make comments like 'I wish we could afford to stay there'.

We did that every year of the 3 years we stayed at Port Orleans. So when we finally scraped the $ together to by a DVC via resale there was no question which property we were purchasing. The fact that it had the lowest ( or near lowest) MF's was even greater incentive.

That was 2 years ago. We love it.

Welcome, srober! What a perfectly charming 1st post! :)

We stayed at value or moderate resorts for years and never even knew about DVC. One year we went with friends who rented DVC points and we stayed in a 2 bdrm at SSR. We completely fell in love with SSR. When we made the decision to purchase we bought at SSR. When AKV came about we bought there and now again just recently at VGF. It's nice that we are able to stay at other resorts when available at 7 months too but I like where we own.

I'm very curious, I see so many SSR owners saying this, that they never stay at their home resort, but wait till the 7 month window to book somewhere else. I'm wondering, if that is the case, why didn't you purchase at the resort that you loved in the first place? Just a totally curious question.

We bought at SSR to stay at SSR and all of the other options. We did not buy there just to stay elsewhere. We really like our home resort.

I bought SSR to stay at SSR. I bought while it was still under construction. My last trip was the first time I didn't stay there at all. I missed it.

Thank-you! Maybe a GF add-on? I don't think my DH would go for it. He thinks we have enough points.

we love it ! Its our home resort and while I enjoyed staying at the other resorts I missed "home" my SIL hates staying anywhere else .
We are staying at AKL because my Granddaughter who is 4 asked us to take her there , her parents are not going this time : )

Things we loved about SSR is just the location and the feel of the resort . Its nice when my granddaughter wants to go shopping and her little brother and parents are way to tired I can just grab her and walk there to the WOD store and let her go till she is tired . I load her back into the stroller and she is asleep when we get back to the room . My Dh loves it because of the location , the way you can get anywhere for dinner at any other resort by going to DTD its less then 5 min for us we always stay at in the end building .
My SIL says he loves it because he never got to go anywhere when he was a kid on vacation and this was the first place he ever stayed . He says its special to him !
My DD says its the best gift we ever bought her and that makes it special but she really likes the horse feel : )

Honestly, this is what keeps me from booking a reservation at SSR. Friends of mine have been upgraded not once, but twice from an All Star to SSR. On both occasions, the upgrade was due to overbooking.

I can appreciate the need to fill rooms, but a 3 category upgrade coupled with free dining hurts.

Why would upgrading someone from All Star who is paying cash to another cash room at SSR make you not want to book there. :confused3

I just don't see the connection at all.

Disney owns a percentage of all resorts and certainly with SSR being the largest DVC resort; there are going to be more rooms available for cash there.

What someone else gets has no affect on my enjoyment of a resort.

I asked the same question in another way by asking how it hurt them. Truthfully the only explanation that I can think of is the idea that if another gains something I've paid for, it hurts me in some way. Kind of like when someone else gets the same plane ticket or hotel for less. I don't subscribe to the theory that someone else's gain is my loss.

We didn't buy at SSR to stay other places but, due to a combination of naivety and stupidity, we didn't realise that buying in at another resort was an option when we bought.

Since we have now tried every current WDW DVC resort, we have realised that SSR is probably our least favourite (with the exception of, maybe, BCV which would possibly win out due to location). If we had our time over, we would probably buy in at either BWV or VWL - but it wouldn't bother us if we couldn't get anywhere else at 7 months, we don't HATE Saratoga Springs, we just prefer to stay other places.

We bought SSR points primarily to be able to book the THV. When they raised the point requirements, that took away much of the reason for having them, so we do use them elsewhere more and more. They are handy points to have.

We just got pass ROFR and are looking forward to our first stay at SSR. We bought there because of the future expansion of DTD. We travel with both of our grown daughters and two granddaughters, 4 & 9. We love the parks but thinking ahead when they get older, with the new DTD, we believe that will give them the options of more adult themed things to do. We have stayed at many of the value and moderate resorts and finally took the plunge to become members!

I 2004 we got a great deal at SSR between Disney and a family member working for Disney. We did buy to stay at other resorts like BWV which we love. After buynin into SSR and staying there we love SSR and BW and all the other resorts. We then bought re sale OKW and love that resort also.
