SSR add-on, resale or through Disney?

I know there are a lot of posts about add-ons, but I didn't see this one specifically addressed. We currently own at BWV and are considering an add-on at SSR. What are the benefits/disadvantages to buying SSR resale vs. buying direct through Disney? I think the current price per point is higher through Disney, but we wouldn't be paying closing costs. And even if we buy resale, we'd ideally hold out until a contract with the same UY became available.

Thanks!

We bought our SSR add-on direct from Disney after initially buying a resale at HH. The Disney transaction was great b/c it was an almost "instant" purchase. OUr add-on points were in the system the same day and I started making reservations the next day. We paid a little more per point than via resale but we paid no closing costs and no MF for the "free/banked" 2006 points. We had an incentive discount on the points b/c we bought more than 160 points. Compared to resale we really only paid about $2 more per point. That little amount was actually priceless b/c I was able to call the next day, June 6th, and get into AKV with a 2 bedroom for our week in October.

We are in the decision making process for another add-on at AKV direct from Disney. They have some very decent incentives. After that we are looking for a 150 point HH resale b/c we are in no hurry to get those points and prefer a resale with banked points.

I guess that for us the decision to buy Disney direct came down to the fact that we could complete the process very quickly w/o the anxiety of waiting for all that is invloved with a resale.

Hope that this might help!

I think it depends on the number of points you are looking for. For 200 points it might be worth it to pick up a resale. You will save around $10 per point vs. Disney discounted price.

For a smaller contract like 50 points, I'd say it's close enough to make direct from DVC the best choice. You are looking at approx $87 or so via resale vs. Disney's $104. It's a big difference, but with a low # of points, the closing costs via resale will eat up most of the savings.

Assume you already know that the SSR points cannot be used at BWV until the 7 month mark and vice versa.

Just posting because many assume buying a contract at a second resort gives them 11 month booking privileges for the total number of points - and as you know, it doesn't. Points can't be combined until the 7 month mark.

Assumption correct. We plan on using these points either at SSR or will reserve at SSR at 11 months and check for availability at other resorts at 7 months if need be. (Buy where you don't mind staying, right?) Also, we plan on purchasing enough points that we shouldn't need to combine - likely we'd treat them as separate contracts regardless of the fact that we would be able to combine points. But thanks for the reminder!

Besides price and closing costs, be sure to check out the point status for any resale contract.

Disney will give you full current year's points.

Resale may have banked, current, or borrowed points. These can make a big difference in the 'value' of the resale contract. Also consider what the seller may be wanting in the way of any reimbursement of maintenance fees. Remember, maintenance fees are prorated by calendar month. They do not apply to a "Use Year". Example: If someone has a June UY, has no 2006 points and all 2007 points, and wants you to reimburse all of the calendar year's 2007 maintenance fees by saying you get all of the 2007 UY points, then they are asking you to pay for points they used (IE their 2006 points which covered Jan-May 2007). In this case your dues should be prorated June-Dec only.

Thanks for posting this! I am considering buying into DVC, and was wondering how this would work (it's all hypothetical right now, but I keep reading about "addonitis", and am afraid I'd be susceptible).

with a minnimum of 100 point add on, you recieve double developer points. In the case of a 100 point add on that would be 200 points free!. Now lets add this up, assuming your UY is July or later, you would recieve 100 points for 2006 (current UY), 100 points on your UY for 2007, and 200 double developer points. Thats 400 points for a 100 point add on. You could not find a resale close to that value.
