I've seen this before but..

Can someone explain the difference between adding on at SSR directly through DVC vs. outside purchase.

My home resort is BLT, but would like to add on at a second resort and think SSR is the one?

Assuming a cash purchase.

Resale can be had at SSR in the low $70s/point (plus closing costs) which is far below buying direct from disney.

It wont take that long to find the right number of points or UY you need as there are lots of SSR contracts for sale. Shop around with all the major resellers.

The down side for doing resale is the wait. You may not have your points for 2 months to get your points (1 month to pass ROFR and another for the closing process).

There are some great threads here on the DIS about the resale process.

Read them to learn all the details!

If you purchase additional points directly through Disney, there won't be any closing costs, your points will be in your account immediately, but you will pay full price which is currently about $120 a point. The contracts at SSR expire in 2054 so you decide if it's worth the current rate. If you buy resale, you can typically get a contract for $65-$70 a point which is almost 50% less. There will be around $450 closing cost, it will take about 8 weeks before the points are in your account and the entire process is complete. I recently purchased two SSR contracts from www.**********.com and was very pleased with my broker Jaki. I paid $64 a point for my most recent purchase and $65 a point for the other. Of course, Disney has the right to exercise "Right of First Refusal" so you never know if you will get the contract until making an offer. It seems like all contracts are going through if your offer is $68-$70 a point. If any lower, there is a possibility that Disney will buy it back. This won't cost you anything but you will have to start all over and bid on a different contract. Good luck. :)

Ease vs. cost and the size of your contract. IF you are looking for a small add on, then going through Disney will might be easier as small contracts, even at SSR, are not as easy to find, especially if you want to have the same UY. Buying through Disney always gives you the same UY.

However, if you are in no rush and want at least 100 points, you will save a lot of money (around $30.00 per point) going resale. But, you are looking at a 2 month period, assuming you pass ROFR the first time. If not, it could take 3 - 4 months from start to finish.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I guess that was the confirmation I was looking for.

No difference in when the contracts run out correct?

In the end, I guess I have to be patient because I'm looking for a 75-125 add on w/ December UY and it's been slow going at this point.

With a purchase directly from DVC, the SSR points will have the same Use Year and will all be in the same contract.

With a resale you can purchase any Use Year you wish which will give you a second membership number. Points could be combined with a simple transfer from one contract to the other (which is not needed when all points are under the same membership). We currently have 3 contracts at 2 resorts with 3 different Use Years and have had no problems managing the banking deadlines thus far (16 years). Having multiple Use Years gives us a lot more flexibility regarding our reservations since we can use points to best take advantage of the banking deadlines.

If you only want one Use Year resale is still a great way to go once you find the number of points you want with that Use Year. Be sure to title the resale purchase exactly the same as your original contract and then make sure Member Accounting is aware that you'd like the contracts combined under one membership (they will sometimes do this automatically when they discover the identical title information - but, to be sure, I'd also inform them directly of your desire to combine everything).

There are no downsides to either method - with the resale purchase you can really save some $$, with the direct purchase you can quickly get the Use Year and exact number of points you are looking for (but at a higher price then via resale).

Good luck! :)
