Pre-Cruise Day An early beginning, a sad afternoon, and a fun, but late evening
This is a trip report for the special DVC SS Member Cruise held Feb. 2-6, 2003 on the Disney Wonder.
Cast: Me & DH (MarkRG). We are DINKS who love Disney. Weve been DVC members since Jan. of 2000. This is our 4th DCL cruise (did 3-day Magic in Oct. 99, 7-day Eastern Magic in May 01, 4-day Wonder in May02 and we have a 7-day Western Magic planned for 5/10/03).
Im a morning person but 4 am is early even for me. We had a 7:15 flight out of OHare so it was up and out the door by 5 am. Due to the new regulations of not locking luggage we had also repacked into our duffel and garment bag instead of our one hardsider. Think it was a good choice for this cruise.
It was a nice flight and before we knew it we getting off the plane in Orlando. Mark picked up the phone to let his Dad know we had landed safely his jaw dropped and I heard oh my God! At that moment he turned to me said the shuttle blew up and as he was saying it I looked up at the monitors in the airport and they were showing the breaking news. It was quite a shock to the system to leave the cocoon of not knowing anything while in the air to getting the reality of being on the ground. Needless to say we listened to the news all the way to Port Canaveral.
We made a stop at the Target near Port Canaveral (thanks to Dave for his map) to pick up green poster board for the DISmeet sign Mark wanted to make. Then a quick lunch at Burger King and on to the Radisson for check in. Our room was ready and Im pretty sure it was the exact same room as last May. 2nd floor right by the pool.
We spent some time in the room with Mark making his DISmeet sign while I put together bags of buttons for all the DISers who had let Mark know they wanted them (they turned out to be a big hit with not only the DIS folks, but the DVC folks as well).
At 4:30 we headed over to Grills to watch the Magic leave and wish her Bon Voyage. Little did we know that Laurette, George, Carmine and Kay were sitting two tables away from us.
First the Carnival Pride went by and the people at the next table were looking for friends of theirs sailing on it. When they found them Mark snapped pictures and offered to e-mail it to them thats my DH!
Then it was time for the Magic. We got out our Mickey Mitts and waved and waved and waved. Mark got some great shots of those on Deck 10 so check out his web page as soon as he posts the links. Hope some of you got to see us as well.
At 7pm we headed out to the pool area and hoped someone would show up for our meet
. It wasnt long until minimahaki (Laurette,) George, Carmine and Kay came by. We were then joined by Cherylp3 (Cheryl) and Todd, BethC (Beth) and her family (including Mom & Dad), Beth, #1 Mouse (Gail) and her DH John. Minnie*Mouse (Paula) and (I think) MrsDon stopped by but were tired and not feeling well. I think at one point Tigger1bounce also stopped by but hadnt replied to Mark so we werent expecting them and didnt have buttons. Beth and Chris brought nice blue lanyards for everyone to hold our key to the world cards and inserted small cards with the DISboards logos on them. Thanks guys! Gail brought bubbles for Mark and I since I had posted on the bubbles thread that I had no room for bubbles with all the buttons we had. Thanks Gail! We passed out the DIS buttons Mark had made. So a small, but fun group chatted for about 2 hours outside and then got smart and came indoors. John got the hostess at the restaurant to set up a table for 2 eaters and 10 drinkers
.
Dvcreg, her DH Gary and daughter Caitlin found us in there and joined in the eating since they had just arrived. About 10:30 we broke up and went to get ready for sailaway the next day. We went to bed with real mixed emotions. It was a long day, with a sad afternoon, but the laughter of the evening was a great way to end the day and start our cruise. We knew we were in for something special.
