Spring "What are you reading?" Book Thread

This is our Spring of "renewal" for our family's eating habits. I just finished reading The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. Which was amazing! It actually led me to do a little research, and we have an all-natural grass-only farm/market within 5 minutes of our house! Local veggies and naturally fed meats!

I'm now reading Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser.
I've recently gotten into the "whole foods movement" (for lack of a better term) as well, and it's really interesting to read more about the foods (and "foods") we eat and how they affect our health, the environment, etc. I just finished Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food - you should check that one out as well - and have encouraged my partner to read it too.

I read Fast Food Nation a couple years ago; the movie is interesting as well, just be forewarned that there are some gross images of slaughterhouses & such. Another movie I saw recently that was great is called "Fresh." It's an indie film, but I think it's available to watch on Amazon's OnDemand thingy. Again, gross slaughterhouse images, but it has made me never want to eat regular supermarket meat again.

Sorry for the OT about movies, but I think for this topic a film is sometimes more powerful than a book b/c you can actually see what goes on at these processing plants.

Got several good ideas from you guys :goodvibes so will share mine:
--Currently reading The Apothecary's Daughter and enjoying it. Fairly light reading.
--Recently read the entire Percy Jackson series because my daughter downloaded them on my Kindle for herself. Very cute series.
A friend recommended a series that turned out to be a hoot. They were the Lucia books. Make way for Lucia, Mapp & Lucia, Lucia in London etc. 1930s British etiquette and social standing are the underlying theme.
--For the younger crowd, or young at heart crowd, DD(10) is reading The Rangers Apprentice series and demanding that I read them after her b/c they are "that good."

I was wondering about this series. I've heard good things and I've been looking for a new series to start after I finish the last 2 Percy Jackson books and the 2 Kingdom Keepers books I have.

Also someone recommended the Left Behind series to me. I'm not a very religious person but she said she thought I would still like the story. Anyone read any of these books?

I do audio books..

Right now I am in the middle of Under the Done by Stephen King.

Talk about a long book but its a good one.

I'm enjoying Ted Kennedy's memoir 'True Compass' and I'll be reading Rose's after I finish it. I also have Albert Schweitzer's autobiography on my nightstand as well as The Canterbury Papers by Judith Koll-Healey and Elizabeth and Mary by Jane Dunn. (Don't tell but I sneak some Aurora Teagarden by Charlaine Harris in between the heavy stuff :P. )

I just got done reading Open by Andre Agassi. Loved it! I am currently reading too many books at once lol. I am reading the 2nd book in the Sookie Stackhouse books. I am addicted to vampires :rotfl2: , The Fertility Diet (to help w/ my PCOS) and Going Rogue by Sarah Palin.

Just finished "The Vanished Man" by Jeffery Deaver. He's the guy who wrote "The Bone Collector". Pretty good read with lots of twists and turns. :) Going to pick a book from this thread for a new read! :goodvibes

Next up for April's book club read is Girl With a Pearl Earring. Haven't started it yet but need to get going on it.

We just got done reading The Lost Quilter by Jennifer Chiaverini. Everyone in our Club absolutely loved it. It tells the story of a woman named Joanna, a slave who escaped along the underground railroad, but is captured again. It tells of her life at the beginning of the Civil War and how she plots to escape again through her sewing of a quilt.

Other books we've read (and that I can remember off the top of my head) are:
Angry Housewives Eating Bon-Bons
Three Cups of Tea
Kite Runner
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Bean Trees
The Kitchen Boy
The Other Boleyn Girl
Water for Elephants
The Time Travelers Wife
The Memory Keeper's Daughter
Red Tent
The Secret Lives of Bees
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

All of them I really enjoyed... Some I never would have read and I have the wonderful women in my book club to thank for introducing me to some great stories and authors!

Right now I'm reading The Kingdom Keepers (started it a couple of years ago and never finished). In fact, I think I'm going to get off the computer and go read some!

Looking forward to getting other ideas from this thread...

Didn't she write a quilting series?

Currently, I'm reading The Terror by Dan Simmons which is a fictionalized account of what happened on the lost "Franklin Expedition" where 19th century ships were caught in the ice trying to navigate the Northwest Passage and all hands were lost. It's a horror story and pretty good, so far. DH is reading The Gathering Storm, 12th in the Wheel of Time Series, which I read and enjoyed last fall. On audiobook, we both just finished A Game of Thrones, by George R.R. Martin, which was excellent (we're going to buy the remaining books in the series). I've just started listening to The Hundred Days, book 19 in the Aubrey-Maturin series.

I'm waiting for the 4th Percy Jackson book from the library, love the series so far. In the mean time I'm reading Vanity Fair, since it was free on my e-reader.

Didn't she write a quilting series?

Yes, she did. This book is a part of the series, number 14... the character was introduced in Runaway Quilt, an earlier book. Only one of us in the club have read all her books. For the rest of us The Lost Quilter was our first by this author - but I didn't feel lost by not reading the other book first. But I plan on doing it now since I enjoyed the story so much.

Maybe someone here can help me out. Someone told me to read a series of books that are actually a ladys memoirs of her real life. I cant remember the author for the life of me. I am thinking her initials are J.L. though.

I am currently half way through the Scarpetta Series by Patricia Cornwell and I really like them. I also LOVE James Patterson.
Jane Green, Rowan Coleman and Emily Griffin I really like as well. I am always looking for new authors to check out.

I have tried to read Summerland 3 different times. I just cant get into it. Have never gotten past the 2nd chapter.
