the whole carry on thing is something i have not understood so i need the experts my questions is about spray sunscreen cans are they ok to put in carry on bags?
with the price of luggage and a family of 5 the price of luggage is more than the price of a round trip ticket lol
the whole family is carrying on bags something new for us i know its 3-1-1 but what does taht mean???????????????

Each container is a maximum of 3 oz. All your containers have to fit into 1 1-gallon ziploc bag. This is for 1 person.

3oz - 1 bag - 1 person.

If you sunscreen bottle is less than 3 oz (actually really 3.4oz since the rule is 3oz or 100mL and 100mL=3.4 oz) and can fit into your single baggie you are fine.

It means that you may carry liquids, gels and creams past airport security only in 3.4 ounces or less containers, and those containers must be placed in a quart-size clear zip top baggie (that is a quart bag, NOT a gallon bag). That baggie must be sent separately through the x-ray so the screeners can see it.

Spray sunscreen is a liquid. If you want to carry on spray sunscreen, it must be in a 3 ounce or less container and fit into your quart baggie.

CVS sells a three-ounce spray sunscreen. It will not last very long, so if you are staying more than a couple of days you will probably need to buy sunscreen when you arrive. The 3 oz spray bottle is quite large. When I carry one, the screeners usually check it to see what size it is, so I try to position it in the baggie so they can see the 3 oz designation.

This spray bottle, should you choose to carry it, will take up a lot of space in your baggie. You can put as many 3-oz containers in your baggie as you want, but you must be able to completely close the baggie.

Each passenger is permitted a baggie, so a group of 5 could carry 5 quart baggies through security.

Not a one gallon bag - a one QUART zip-top clear plastic bag!!!!!!

I considered buying one of those three-ounce spray cans of sunscreen yesterday - but it appears relatively bulky, given the small amount of space in each one-quart bag.

It may work for you, since each ticketed passenger is entitled to their own baggie. You could probably fit two cans, plus a travel-sized toothpaste, in one bag. Remember, where the TSA regulations say "fit comfortably", it means the agent should be able to easily see the contents - not have to twist containers, peer between containers, etc.

For those of us who live in the metric world (that being every country in the world except for three...) it is a 1 litre bag. I would gently correct crashbb who is also in the metric world and point out that our American friends would consider that 1 quart, not 1 gallon.

I have no idea about these things, but Lewisc tells me that I don't need to be smart, I only need to use google (Hm, Der Spiegel has a cover story this week 'is the internet making us stupid?')

OP, may I suggest that you visit www.tsa.gov as they have more information and if you don't understand the 3-1-1 rule it will help.

Well, I see that the helpful people were posting as I was posting, to correct our metric friend. Google tells me
1 U.S. quart = 0.946 liter. 1 liter = 1.06 U.S. quarts. 1 U.S. gallon = 3.8 liters. 1 imperial gallon = 1.2 U.S. gallons

thanks for your help now i get it i guess i'll be buying the sunscreen at the resort i know it will cost more but at least i'll have it to use i had cancer last year and need to use #30 maybe i can ship a box of stuff to my resort before i arrive than how do i ship it back home?

Sorry - as Bavaria pointed out, we go with 1 Litre bags (Canada) and I was off on the conversion.

I can't imagine that it wouldn't be cheaper to buy a bottle of sunscreen at the resort than it would be to pay to ship a box two ways.

Could you possibly check ONE suitcase and put your liquids in it? It can't cost that much to check one suitcase.

Also keep in mind that while each passenger can fill a qt-sized ziploc with <= 3.3 oz liquid/gel containers, that doesn't necessarily mean that each ziploc has to have that person's containers. Feel free to shuffle around the little containers to best optimize space. I don't use spray sunblock but perhaps the cans may fit best if 3 (or more) of them are lined up together in one ziploc?

Honestly, I don't think three will fit. Now, multiple two-ounce tubes of CVS 30 SPF sunscreen, or multiple three-ounce tubes of CVS 30 SPF sunscreen for faces, sure. But while I didn't measure - except visually - the spray cans look to be about 1.5" or 2" in diameter, and about 4.5" to 5" tall.

www.amazon.com is a wonderful thing

I travel about 300 days a year and buy much of my things from them, delivered to my hotel room.

LOL probably not both ways, but one way could be cheaper!! I forgot my sunscreen in Feb (hey, I'm in Ohio, we dont use a lot of it in Feb!) It was very, very clear, so I had to suck it up and pay the $13-$15 or whatever the resort wanted for sunscreen :)

My CVS three-ounce sunscreen spray can is about 6 1/4 inches high and 2 inches wide. Three would not fit in a baggie. Two might, but nothing else would fit in with them.

I dislike cream or lotion sunscreens, although they would be far easier to pack. I prefer the sprays.

I buy liquid sunscreen in a PUMP bottle (Banana Boat makes it) and then transfer some to a small 1 or 2 oz sample size pump bottle. A sample bottle of hairspray would be perfect. Just empty it out and put the sunscreen in it. I have done several 5 day trips that way, and it worked out fine. If you keep the bottles small, you can fit quite a few in the quart size bag (I have become very good at it!!)

I was also worried about this because as soon as we check in at the resort hotel we are heading straight to Blizzard Beach.. I decided to go buy a small 3 oz bottle of sunscreen to put in my carryon and then the big can will go into my checked luggage.. I figure the small bottle will be sufficient for that first day since we wont have our bags yet, but by putting the bigger can in checked luggage that will allow us to have that lotion for day 2.

Last trip I forgot my suntan lotion at home and had to buy a can at WDW and it was around $16 I believe :scared1:

Note to self: based on actual measurements, compared to my guess... MEASURE suitcase, do not eyeball/estimate!
