Spouse as Extra Driver with National and Budget

I can get the same rate with both of these companies. I am a member of the Emerald Club with National and Fastbreak with Budget. So, I do not want to wait at the counter. Is there a way to add my DH as an additional driver so I don't have to wait at the counter (which defeats being a member of these programs)?

I couldn't find a place on either website but I might have missed it.

Thanks in advance.

Have a look but I think Budget's agreement already includes a second driver if its a spouse or family member (without needing details). I looked at Nationals and didn't see that there. I think you can register under something called Fast Break tho (or maybe that was another company) which allows you to register your spouse's DL in advance so you can skip the line and not go to the counter.

We are using Budget this week for our car rental and my husband is a fast break member. They send you out to the garage to the Fast Break counter. He asked the attendant if I could drive the vehicle for free, they said yes and didn't even need to see my driver's license. It was very easy.

Rules for additional drivers with National. You must log in the National EC to make your reservation. You can add the driver at the kiosk or at the exit booth. It is NOT automatic and the additional driver will need to be present and present their license.

Additional Driver Fee
Is there always an additional driver daily fee? How much is it?
Any additional driver (including a spouse or domestic partner) will pay a daily fee of approximately $10 per day unless the primary renter is a member of Emerald Club or has a Corporate Contract Agreement.

Emerald Club Members in the United States and Canada are allowed to have the following Additional drivers without a fee:

Emerald Club member's spouse, common law spouse, or domestic partner who has the same address on the drivers license as the Emerald Club member and meet normal renter requirements.

Immediate family member, Mother/Father, Son/Daughter, or Brother/Sister who has the same address on the drivers license as the Emerald Club member and meet normal renter requirements.

Corporate Contracts / Business Benefits Member in the United States and Canada are allowed the following additional drivers at no charge:

Commercial (corporate) rentals, the renter's business partner, employer or fellow associate, who has an assigned corporate contract with National and drives the car for business purposes and meet normal renter requirements.

All other additional authorized driver situations are subject to a daily charge.

What about this scenario......I'm a EC member and I'm travingling with immediate family (mother, sister, daughter) but only my daughter and I have the same address, however she's only 18. Would I still be able to add her for no additional fee or would there be a fee because she's under age 25? If so, what would the fee be?

Thank you for this. I am a Fast Break member, so it looks like I should be all set. I will ask at the Fastbreak Counter just in case.

Perfect! You are so helpful. I did log on and reserve thru my Emerald Club so I will just add my DH at the exit booth.

Love the DIS!

I have always been under the impression it was. From National's Emerald Aisle terms & conditions (emphasis mine):

b) Unless applicable law requires otherwise, the Vehicle may only be driven by you or an Additional Authorized Driver. An "Additional Authorized Driver" is an individual who (i) is a capable and validly licensed driver for the type of Vehicle being rented, (ii) is at least 21 years of age (a young renter fee may apply for drivers under age 25), (iii) has your prior permission to drive the Vehicle, and (iv) is either a member of your immediate family who permanently resides with you, or a fellow employee who drives the Vehicle for business purposes. You will not allow use of the rental vehicle by any driver in violation of the requirements set forth above. Your immediate family members includes your parent, child, spouse or a domestic partner. In addition to the above, Additional Authorized Drivers who otherwise meet National’s qualifications can be added at the time of rental. The Additional Authorized Drivers and you are referred to collectively in the Agreement as Authorized Driver(s).

So, if I am reading that correctly, it sounds like you *don't* have to add an immediate family member or fellow employee (on business), but *do* have to add anyone else. I called to verify that at one point, because my wife often drives the car when I am on leisure trips. I will try to make a point of calling again to double check, and if I am wrong will be sure to come back and update this thread.

Of course, it wouldn't hurt to have your spouse's license handy as you exit the lot, then you are covered either way.

It sounds as though in your case, your daughter does not qualify as an Additional Authorized Driver with National, as she is not 21.

there will be an under age driver fee of 25.00 per day and because she is under 21, she would not be eligable anyway.

They want the additional drivers listed on the contract.
They need to be present with a driver's license to be added. The permission part is because you have given permission for them to be added. If you read the rental contract (should you have one) it clearly states that no other driver is permitted to drive the vehicle unless they are listed on the contract (definitely not a quote, but very close to what I read daily).
This is what I was taught in training. So, this is what I do. :)

Another reason to add the authorized additional driver to the contract is that there may otherwise be some quesiton if you are relying on your credit card coverage in the event of an accident. I have been told that the CC coverage only covers named Additional Drivers, not just authorized Additional Drivers. As a result, when possible, I always try to add any authorized Additional Driver. -- Suzanne

Also helps if you are stopped by the police.

So can we just hand them our spouses' drivers license at the exit booth and they can add them onto the contract without any additional charge because we are Emerald Club members?? I seem to remember something about including my wife's name on the master rental agreement when I first signed up for Emerald Club in order to have her included for free as an additional driver...no??

To have the additonal driver added free you must have made your reservation via the EC member page. They still want to verify the license and yours and that additional person needs to be present. Your spouse may be on your Master Agreement, but, still must be listed on the contract and in order to do that the spouse must be present and the license verified. It is NOT automatic. As I said before, insist that person be added to the agreement. Do NOT take the "she/he is automatic", that is just the rental agent or exit agent being lazy.

Thank you very much! I will make sure my wife is added to the contract at the exit booth. It really is great having you on these boards - you provide a great deal of valuable information!

You are most welcome. Please, make sure the agent does not give you " it's automatic". INSIST her name be added. If they give you any more excuses, which I doubt they will, ask for a manager.
