Sports: Deflate-Gate

In any case, they didn't engage in a conspiracy to appear to comply with a rule with the intent of breaking it.
First let me say I am in no way "going after" the Chargers. It's just an example. I think every team "more likely than not" has their own way of bending some rules. Whatever, to me it shouldn't be done but it's certainly not federal case worthy. Anyway....

Hiding stick-um on a towel to later put on a ball is very much engaging in a conspiracy to appear to comply with a rule and yet break it. Seriously, you think it's not?? Again, I am not trying to go after the Chargers, I could care less, just kind of in disbelief at the "they were ok, the Pat's were not" hypocrisy. :faint:

So how many times do you think Tom and McNally deflated the balls?
How many times did McNally deflate them? (Remember, Tom "probably" was aware, he didn't touch them). My guess is not enough as TB was pissed at the feel of them (according to what I've heard from the texts between McNally and the other guy) in the weeks prior! :rotfl2::thumbsup2 I think if it was happening all the time there would not have been that particular conversation.

we might be miscommunicating...I'm talking about what punishment to expect and whether or not the Charger thing is comparable to Deflategate. For the reasons I mentioned in earlier posts, I don't think they are the same type or level of violation. And I think we can expect a much harsher punishment for Tom and the Pats for the reasons I've listed.

I agree that both are forms of cheating.

Nah, I think we're communicating :chat: I think "deflate-gate" is comparable to "sticky-towel" so the punishments should be equal. Let's say the ball guys deflated the balls. There is no "proof" that TB ordered it. He may like his balls that way and make it known, but again, no proof he said "McNally, go in the john and let air out on the way to the field". Chargers as well. Sticky towels were proven, but again, no smoking gun that had the QB or WR saying, "Put stick-um on the ball for me". I guess maybe I don't understand how you think it's different.

Here's the bottom line: my money is on the pats getting a harsh punishment because McNally assits the referees (that defining element was not part of the Chargers incident). His corruption has important implications for the league, and now the nfl has to determine if his job cannot be trusted to the home team and has to become part of the official crew. I expect a big fine and a few lost draft picks or a salary cap hit or something. I'm not up on all the available punishments.

I expect Tom to get suspended for a few games for encouraging this corruption, at least tacitly. I'd put the over/under at 3 games.

And punishments are higher for repeat offenders, so that's factored into my thinking.

Not sure how that factors into punishment for the Pats :confused3 I've always thought the NFL should be in trouble too for it coming to light what a shoddy job they do "inspecting" the balls if it's such a big deal.

I agree that I think it will be a big punishment (I don't agree with that for all my previously stated reasons, but nobodies asking me for advice) but because Goodell is more about swaying to public opinion than anything else and because he did such a piss-poor job the previous year with all the real messes the NFL had to deal with and needs to make himself look like he's doing something this time around.

if it weren't for stuff like this, the question of whether or not the balls were deliberately deflated might be on the table:

I got nuthin'....other than I'm married to a man and have two sons and guys can talk some stupid crap. Doesn't mean it's true. Ever been in a bar? Or a locker room?

Again.... So what do we do about Aaron Rodgers? He has already openly admitted that he has been cheating. Will he get the same penalty? He better....

And a very happy Monday to you.
I took a break from this stuff and enjoyed watching golf and hockey this weekend.

Will stay tuned to see what the decision is and when it's announced. It will probably only be about the Patriots, but heck, I guess you can hope the Packers will be mentioned. :)

Nope, people don't hate the Packers or Rodgers.

pat fan, I was reading the original article yesterday that Mike Florio wrote on ProFootballTalk.com that this CSNNE article talks about and found it very interesting. Mike Florio is a well known Steelers fan who the Pats have owned over the last 15 years and no one more than him would love to see the Patriots get nailed for this, so the fact he wrote a story basically saying the Wells Report and the testing done are in serious question makes this story even more interesting. This isn't a Patriots shill writing this but an avid Steelers fan.

Same here..... the Caps/Rangers game last night was great! Nothing like playoff hockey (even though the Bruins aren't in it this year).

The Patriots/Brady will be used to set an example and no other team/player will be punished (Manning, Rogers, etc). I still stand by my opinion that Brady "more likely than not" expressed his preference for the game balls and made it known they should be as close to his preference or else they could find someone that COULD get them there.

gwynne, I take it you're a Packers fan? Guess who this Pats fans 2nd favorite QB in the NFL is? That's right Aaron Rodgers. Most Pats fans respect that he came out when Deflategate first happened and admitted he over inflates the balls. I don't think GAN asking if Rodgers will get fined was meant as any animosity toward him, but just wanting it to show the obvious conspiracy against the Patriots.

BTW, if you're not a Packers fan...never mind!!!:o

Yet communications from the 2 Patriot locker room employees were text messages? If Brady is clean and the Patriot organization so transparent, why didn't Brady just comply and put an end to the added scrutiny? To anyone outside of Patriot Land, this sketchy action adds to what looks like another of the many Patriot rule abuses. I get that people are homers, what is the point of defending a franchise that has repeatedly broken NFL rules?

I'll just leave these two right here (both PLAYER and TEAM stats):

the obvious conspiracy against the Patriots.
I agree there was a conspiracy here, but not one *against* the Patriots....rather one perpetrated by the Patriots.

It amuses me that folks are still questioning whether or not 'deflation' happened. I mean the guy calls himself *THE DEFLATOR*. He inexplicably took the game balls to a place where they shouldn't have gone. And spent enough time there to slightly deflate 12ish balls.

And do you really believe that a part-time equipment manager would unilaterally decide to deflate the game balls being used in the AFC championship game? You really think Tom didn't give him some instructions (either directly or some indirect manner) on what to do? Remember, he wasn't a full-time guy, one who only worked on home games, and just in the officials locker room. Brady doesn't seem him every day..or possibly ever. How would he know how Tom liked his balls without some sort of conspiracy?
