Sports bras??????

My son marched drum and bugle corps over the summer. (This is NOT high school marching band. This is mostly college aged students.) It is extremely physical. The boys wear just shorts. The girls wear sports bras, and roll down their shorts. They practice in 100 heat. The first time I saw all that skin, yep I was shocked. It was the impact of so many students, looking almost naked. Then I got over it.

They stay in high schools, and sleep on gym floors. The rule IN the high school is shirts for everyone. They had trouble following the rules at one high school and were promptly asked to leave.

I said, "Well what do you think? You look like you are in your underwear?!"

My son said with an eye roll, "We are more covered than at the beach."

It sounds to me like it is more common than I realized.

If it is acceptable for guys to go shirtless, I do not see why girls can just wear a sports bra if they are hot and practicing sports. Not to public places like the mall or stores but if it is physical activity it is not a big deal.

I really don't understand why this is a big deal. Men/boys go shirtless all the time. And as someone else said, sports bras provide more coverage than most bikini tops. What about runners frequently thar wear tops that are sports bras. Is that inappropriate?
I completely agree with you, I was thinking the same thing

OK parents of teen girls......

Is it really appropriate for girls to be in their sports bras without wearing a shirt over it?

My DD and I are not seeing 'eye to eye' on this. What do you guys think?

I know you're wanting parents, sorry, I already typed this out, but *maybe* it's still worth saying?

I run through my neighborhood (when the grass pollen alert is below "very high") and wouldn't hesitate, and often do, to stop for a tea/drink/to look at that cute top while I'm out in the neighborhood. I wouldn't wear it as a fashion choice, but I don't think I have to stop my life and change clothes after working out. I have declined to eat dinner with someone when I ran into them in front of the pizza place, but we thought nothing of walking 20 feet and going to a bar with a patio. I mostly didn't want to be sweaty around people eating dinner!

I'm certainly not a teen though so I don't know what part that is playing in it. They keep everything covered and see folks walking around Target in them that seem to be just what they choose. I see tons of adorable teens in crop tops with sports bra underneath and its a cute sartorial statement I'd do if I didn't think I was too old.

My dd is 19 but at the time of this thread she was 14. If she wanted to wear a "sports bra" during practice I would not have an issue with it. Its not really a bra, its like a cropped tank top.

I could never tell my daughter, even back when she was a teenager, not to wear a sports bra in public. Why?

Because this was me in 1995...

I'm wearing a coat over my sports bra, not out of modesty, but because it was darn cold that day!

(Though, full disclosure... the question of what she should be allowed to wear never actually came up, as my daughter has always been an exclusively jeans and tees type of girl with a sun allergy, so she exposes very little skin, even in summer.)

Some of the guys I've seen going shirtless could benefit from a sports bra for their man boobs.

I'm not quite at that point......yet.

Darn, thought I had read the date correctly on the first post.

But I have no problem with it at all.
