SpongeBob Squarepants??? Never thought I'd write this word....

Sponge loving house here as well - two boys - 5 and 3. I don't think the characters are mean at all - it actually has some pretty good lessons and it's darn funny.

As far as words like stupid and shut up - it's pretty easy to tell your kids that it's not ok to say those things. My boys always say that Sponge just said a bad word - doesn't mean they have to repeat it - it's amazing what talking about things with you kids will do!

I remember watching Loony Tunes growing up and some of that stuff was pretty inappropriate(think Bugs and Elmer Fudd getting married, or Yosimite Sam shooting guns all the time?) We watched very violent cartoons growing up but I don't consider myself a violent person. In fact I teach preschool!! SBSP is just funny, period. I watch it with my kids all the time and talk about the things we see on it. If something is wrong we TALK. In todays world our kids just don't have time anymore to just be silly. And isn't childhood the best time to be silly?? Thanks for letting me rant. Go ahead and let the flaming began.

MY DD4 loves it!
She likes it because spongebob is always making silly faces and laughing. She loves to laugh along with it. She watches more educational shows, like Dora, Blue's Clue's, Sesame Street and Diego, but I think it's fine for her to watch a silly show. Not everything has to be about learning all the time.

I'll sit and watch it with her sometimes. It's funny, and I never got the 'messages' in it. And, I'd actually rather have Spongebob on than say, Wonder Pets (with the constant high-pitched singing) and Caillou (who's always whining). It's not the most wonderful show, but there are a lot worse things out there that kids watch. Nothing wrong with a silly show.

My 6 y/o son loves Spongebob -- even had a Spongebob birthday party earlier this month. My 3 y/o daughter watches it with him but doesn't really get into it like he does.

When he first started watching it, I didn't care for it. I didn't like the spitting, many of the jokes, and the showing of underwear. I was just imagining all of this same behavior with my son. Now it doesn't bother me as much -- I think it kind of grows on you.

No flaming here I feel the same way. We think it is funny and if there is something I need to explain or point out that it is not some that we would say or do in the real world, I just talk to them.

For the longest time I couldn't get past the rediculous theme song; a couple of bars of that and I'd hit the remote without a second thought. But then one day we caught it after the song and what made me chuckle were the facial expressions you sometimes see on the characters. There are some episodes that I will stick around and watch now just because I know Squidward's face is going to make me laugh!
And as for the violence and name calling, its all done in good humor and frankly its a refreshing change from all the PC fluff out there!

DH and DS watch Spongebob together. It's not my favorite thing for either of them to watch, but it's not everyday. I do not think of it as violent and I never saw sexual innuendo. But then Grease was one my favorites at three. When I saw it in high school, I was shocked! How did I miss all that stuff? I guess I just liked the music.

My two year old does the "yoooouuuuuu" and then proceeds to dance around the room, it is hilarious.

I already stated that we watch it and during the shows where someone is being mean (thinking of Squidward doing a bad April Fool's joke on Spongebob) my oldest (6 yr.) and I talk about it. SB is fun loving, has good work ethics, is a good friend, and usually always sees the aquarium as half full as opposed to half empty.

My DD birthday party was all Sponge Bob themed down to the piñata. She's awesomely smart so I don't think watching it has killed too many brain cells.

When I had my first child I thought my kids should only watch eduactional TV and SBSP was inappropriate without ever watching an episode yet I grew up on Looney Toones and Tom and Jerry. SO one day I watched an episode and realized wow this is pretty darn funny!!!!! And I saw nothing wrong with it, no it is not educational but not every show I watch on TV is either.

So now DS9 and DS4 LOVE SBSP and we all watch it together and we quote things and laugh about it and talk about things if necessary.

Now there is humor or things that go over their heads, references that only adults get. Some only we get vs say even my 23 yr old brother would get. But I have never gotten any sexual innuendos from the show whatsoever! I must be missing something.



Also those mentioning On Demand, we have On Demand through Comcast Cable and there are many shows on there that are free. You can browse the menus for the free shows (kid and adult) and if something is going to cost you it will ask you if you are sure and then you can either buy it or not.

It is a nice feature, some movies/shows we see for free instead of renting or if we are too lazy to go to the movie store and rent then we can look and see if there is something there and "buy" it and it goes on our cable bill.

Anyhow I don't mind it at all and would prefer her watching SpongeBob on Nickolodeon than anything on Cartoon Network (with the exception of Scooby Doo & Tom & Jerry).?

I'm soooo with you on this .... DS4 loves SpongeBob since discovering it this year, and I have to sing the theme tune every day with him.

Cartoon Network is not allowed in this house - period!

I just asked DH if he ever saw anything sexual about SBSP and he just laughed and said no. So I speciically asked about Squidward's nose and the other things mentioned. He said he never looked at Squidward's nose that way and thought all the other things were just reference to things that are in the ocean,or at the beach.

You might be able to head over to the Nick Hotel in Orlando and meet up him. A friend of mine stayed there with her kids and they did a charcter breakfast with him.
