Is it frowned upon during TS to order one entree and split it? My fiance and I are making a pact to not overeat while we are there in a couple of weeks, and we are paying OOP as well. Has it ever been a problem for anyone to do so - even in signature restaurants?

We do it all the time. I don't think we've done it at signatures ~ the portion sizes are more realistic. (And yummy, I want to taste two entrees, not share!) We have shared appetizers and desserts at the finer establishments. We have never been charged a "plate fee" but it is possible. Often the food is split in the kitchen and plated for each of us. It is your money, eat what you want. You might consider upping your tip a bit to compensate for the extra work with smaller total bill.

ETA ~ Just remembered ~ we went to Cali Grill and shared a cheese plate, a sushi platter, a bottle of wine and each had dessert.

We share all the time at both regular and signature restaurants (even on the dining credit they will allow you to split one credit).

Many times if we tell them we are sharing, they will bring it out split and plated onto 2 plates for us. Some places even include full size sides for each of us with the meat of the entree split (Sanaa did this).

We did it all of the time -- except at buffets. :) Some of the meals were just too much for both of our kids or even for DH or I. It really helped stretch our DP as well. :)

DH & I have done this at San Angel. Not a problem at all, server was great about it.

My mom is a very lite eater, so we did it on our trip.

Only one place were we charged a "plate" fee of $1.00. I think it was RFC. Still much cheaper than buying two meals and then leaving 3/4 of the food behind.

However, you definately could not do it at buffets.

We will be sharing with DS on upcoming trip. He is 8 and has outgrown the kid plates for the most part, but in some places I don't want to spend $20+ on a meal he won't eat all of. With 3 adults there will be plenty of food to go around.

I've split entrees before and it is fine...honestly sometime we just split the entree and then order a dessert or a appetizer. Makes it easier to try things along with not wasting food! :)
