Split stay or DVC rental

So planning a trip late Jan/early Feb 2019 and can't afford to stay in deluxe resort straight through our entire trip. Originally my plan was to do just 2 nights at Poly and the rest of the stay at POFQ. Historically there has been an "eat stay play" deal during this time too.

But I looked at David's DVC rental and saw that it actually would be about the same cost if we did a DVC rental for the entire trip. Obviously we wouldn't be able to take advantage of the discounts offered at that time, but I looked at the thread from last year about the eat stay play discount and it looks like the savings isn't really all that significant.

The only down side is that you can't cancel the DVC rental AND it's a little over 6 months away and sometimes you can't get the resort you want without a year's notice. Any thoughts?

If you want to book DVC for Feb, put in a request now to see if anything is available. It never hurts to check! Do you know where you want to stay?

We rented from DVC Rental store for Jan. 2017. We booked in June of 2016 and got our reservation within 24 hours, but different people have different experiences and for some it takes a bit longer--it depends on when the DVC owner decides to rent the points. We paid about the same for AKL as we would have paid for a mod. If you are super flexible about your dates, sign up for their specials newsletter and keep watching. They have DVC point specials and confirmed reservations, but they go very quickly.

I've used David's once and had a great experience with them but because I don't normally book any earlier than 60 days out, I've not been able to use them again. I don't like being tied down and not being able to cancel, my plans are always sort of in flux and I have been known to change my resort 3 times before actually arriving so renting points doesn't work out for me. I do split stays 99% of the time now. I normally do a night or two at a value or moderate, whatever I can find for the cheapest, then move over to the Epcot resorts, lately Dolphin because even with their resort fee and parking fees (which Disney now has too) they come in around a moderate price if you shop for discounts.
