Split Checks?

How do you split your restaurant checks?

  • Split evenly - $200 bill / 5 people = everyone chips in $40 plus tip

  • Pay your own way - Either ask for checks to be split or chip in enough to cover your meal

  • Other - because there is always an "other"

Really? You mentioned kayaking in this post and living near the OP. Where do you kayak in the city?

You can kayak all over the place. This is an island and all.

My friend, as mentioned, who lives in CT, though grew up here, Kayaks both where she lives and here - go look in the water, there be kayaks. She's kayaked around the city more than once and, again, does not own a kayak. There are tours, rentals, etc.

The poster had 'NY' as their location. Hence I said we're likely in the same area unless that poster was way upstate, meaning the poster was probably in the area covering me to my friend in CT where I know there is kayaking all in between because she does so.

There's kayaking in at least 3 spots around the city.

I live full time in Fairfield Co. but still own an apt in the city. We use it once or twice a week and most weekends. My husband commutes to the city every day & I go in a few times a month for consulting jobs or whatever.

I was born in the city and lived there til I was 7, moved back when I was 25 til I was 36. We lived in NJ and CT those years while my dad worked in the city but my parents continued to own their NYC apt (still do) and we spent most weekends there. My mom taught for many years at P.S. 43. All my grandparents lived in the city. In fact, my family has lived in Manhattan since the 1880s - my parents were the first to move "away." One of my great uncles was a priest at St. Pat's - you can find his name several places there.

I have kayaked twice in the Hudson. Jet skied too.

Really? This is one of those, "What you learn on the DIS moments for me." :lmao: :thumbsup2

Janepod, when you went kayaking on the Hudson, did you have to get shots & inoculations ahead of time? I heard the water is supposed to be awful? :scared:

The Hudson is fine. Stay out of the East River.

Who the heck goes to the grocery store, everyone I know gets Freshdirect. How did we get by in life without them? :worship:

There are some specialty food shops that I go to in the neighborhood and I will get my cheese in one, bread in another, dessert in another, etc.. I have to get all my favorites. :thumbsup2

I usually pay cash in each one. My friend laughs at me, it seems that makes me a dinosaur and I'm not even 40.

Heh you're normal as far as I'm concerned! If they'd put all the 'right' stuff in one market, fine! But I'm not buying produce from there, the cheese is way better from there, their pastries are totally better than the place with the good produce - oh and if you want a cookie, got to go to THAT specialty store, heh. Hey, we get exercise? ;)

Skip2MyLou, I agree with you. I actually live right in the heart of the city. As I recall from another post Cornflake actually lives north of the city, so she doesn't speak for me, or that everyone here does what she does. As previously mentioned, almost everyone I know gets separate checks or we divide it up according to what we owe. Not down to the penny. No one is that anal. We leave the waitress a nice healthy tip, by approximating what we owe + tip, & toss in a couple dollars more.

But, as you said all those smaller purchases, I get from the supermarket or drugstore in one transaction. I don't do 20 small cash purchases while I'm out. It may sound quaint to people passing through, "Ooo! The newstand. Ooo! The bagel guy. But when you actually live here and have to wait behind someone else for every small purchase, it gets tired FAST. I combine as many items at one store as possible, so I'm not continually waiting in smaller lines or dealing with single transactions all day.

I pretty much know all the places around me that take credit cards. Plus, they all usually have the card logos by the register if they do take cards. So I save what little cash I do carry for the few places I shop that don't take cards.

Whew....I was thinking I may have to take visiting NYC off my "to-do someday" list.

We've talked about a Thanksgiving trip when our kids are older. Typical tourist things, shopping, Macy's T-day parade...I know its quite expensive there but I would never feel comfortable carrying THAT much cash. At least if my CC was lost or stolen then one phone call to the bank would cancel the card & replace money lost. Cash, once its gone, its GONE.

I guess it just depends on what your used to, but I can't imagine having to stop constantly for every little thing.

I do not live north of the City. I was born and raised on this island, and currently sit (and live) within walking distance of you.

Interesting that you supposedly live within walking distance of me, but in this thread, you couldn't name a single local restaurant in the neighborhood, except Olive Garden, which people can see from the subway stop? :confused3 While I gave 6 different posts for the OP to shop around and eat at.

Oh, and I rarely shop at Gristedes and never at overpriced Duane Reade. If you really know the neighborhood, you know the really good places.

So if I fall in, fall to the west. :teacher: :lmao:

In all seriousness, you said you live by Times Square. Can't you see the Hudson? Don't you see all the people out on the water like, every day? The NYC Triathlon was last month; guess where the swim portion takes place.

Back to the original question -- separate checks is a very common practice around here. Sometimes the wait staff automatically makes out separate checks, sometimes they ask if we want separate checks, and sometimes we ask. It's not a big deal.

In the past week I've had two friends post pics on FB with them kayaking. I think one was on the west side and one down by Governors Island.

Yes, I wouldn't recommend bringing a lot of cash. You get pick-pocketed and there goes your travel money. And they are pros here. They know how to get the money if you absentminded for even a moment. Like you said, bring your CC and some cash, but not a lot. You can always go into some stores and they will give cash back on a purchase if you need more cash. So you won't have to worry about bank fees or ever having too much money at one time. You pay for a bottle of water, you can get cash back. :thumbsup2

No, I can't see the Hudson, unless I walk over to there. There are buildings in the way. This is the actual view from my window towards the Hudson:

If I had a better camera phone, the pics would look like this one, who took the pictures a few more blocks from me:

Anyways, as Travelbug mentioned, we are getting way, way off topic. :offtopic:

Sorry folks, carry on!

Walking distance. This is NYC, not Ohio. I am not in or adjacent to Times Square. Nor do I go to Times Square unless forced by circumstance.

I could be at your door by 10.

So, if we go out to eat, are we going to split the check or get separate ones? :rotfl2:

Unless we have invited the others to dinner, we usually ask for separate checks. Last Friday we went to a Japanese steak house for my best friend's 35th anniversary. Their two kids invited their friends as a surprise for them. We all had separate checks except for the parents and Nana. The daughter & her husband picked up Nana's meal and the son picked up the parents meal.

My best friend & I got out to lunch every once and awhile, usually the same place and so we usually take turns picking up the check. My BF happened to get the last couple ones, so I got today's check.

I've never seen separate checks, but you have, so I dunno where the heck you eat, but it frightens me because... might be Olive Garden. I'm going to Gramercy Tavern with Janepod.

Nah, we're clearly all fibbers because this can't possibly just work fine this way for us!

Nobody has an issue with what works for you. The point was simply that it would be as odd for me not to ever encounter a situation with split checks as it would for you to never encounter a situation where it was all on one check.

That said, those of you who've never experienced a split check in a way aren't really qualified to make a direct comparison on the various payment methods mentioned here. I mean, if you've never experience a split check, what possible viable opinion could you form on the transaction & how it works? :confused3 And I think those of us who have all experienced ALL the various payment methods seem to agree that each has its place :goodvibes

Well what would you have us do? Picket every deli, pizza place, etc., in the town? I mean it's up to the CCs to stop them, and there aren't enough people, I'd wager, to go investigating every burrito place and deli in NY, and you can't force someone to run your cc so... :confused3 It's just the way it is.

I wouldn't suggest anything. I just find it odd. As with you & the split checks, requiring a minimum purchase for a CC is something I've never seen.

I would think being asked "who's on this check?" would be commonplace at any Japanese steakhouse (even NYC) since you're usually sitting with people you don't even know :thumbsup2

I think we should all go and let the fine folks in NYC and other NE areas pay for our meal. Since we won't be getting separate checks, maybe we can just chip in a little and they won't mind, since they aren't cheap, like we are.:thumbsup2

As long as it's not Olive Garden :thumbsup2
