Called today to make my reservations for my Aug trip. Of course the website was down and had to call:mad: Anyway they told me Hoop de doo is closedfor renovations when I'm there. So was thinking of trying the spirit of Aloha show. How is it. My kids love hop de doo and I like it to but in all my trips I cannot remember going to spirit of aloha. :confused3

we went a few yrs ago with our 4 children ages at time 5,5,9,8 and we all loved it. The food was delicous too.

We went a few years ago. The food was great. The pineapple bread is to die for. The show is a corny Gidget does Hawaii but the fire dancer was spectacular. We had fun and the 9 year old with us thought it was funny. If you have never done it I would say go for it. We have never done the hoop de doo so I can't really compare.

This was the worst part of our trip in 09.. It was cold, in March, the food was ok and the show was dreadful. Maybe it was because it was the last day of the tri and we were tired but it will always be referred to as the Luau of Terror in our house.

Oh no! We have this booked for July and I hope we have a better time. Hopefully the fire part of the show will overshadow the other dreadful parts for us.

We went this past October. We were four adults - two couples travelling together. WE LOVED IT! Loved it. Slightly kitschy, but nothing that made us roll our eyes. Rather, it was FUN!! Think "Hawaiian High School Musical" (sort of) :) The music was wonderful, they did many "real" Hawaiian dances and the performers were all so beautiful and talented.

The food was wonderful, and the show had precisely the effect on us they were going for - we were transported to another world for a couple hours.

We loved it so much we are going again this year :D

Put me in the "no" boat.

This wasn't terrible, but I really don't think it's worth the cost...and I LOVE HDDR. I went with my friend this past August, and just wasn't impressed with the food (except for the salad...the salad was strangely the best part of the meal). Parts of the show were good, but the overarching storyline was kind of lame.

Again, not terrible, and obviously people like it. I personally wouldn't go back.

We've been to it 4 times now and have never had a bad experience. The salad is wonderful (tried to recreate the dressing at home, but was not the same), coconut bread, and ribs were very good. The show is entertaining, but not spectacular. This year we will be trying Hoop de doo- sounds like we will love this show too!

Did this one time. It was okay, but it didn't wow any of us. Kids like the fire twirler but that was about it. You can only keep young kids entertained by hula dancers for so long.
Kids LOVE HDDR! Have been the last three times.
What about Mickey's Backyard BBQ at FW instead? We have never been to it so maybe others can fill you in on it.

Well I booked the spirit of aloha. Not realing looking forward to it but I'm going to give it a shot. Backyard BBQ I didnt think of that. Maybe I'll change:lmao:

We did the luau for the first time Aug 2010 trip - if you click on the link in my signature beside the "ASMusic 2010" that will take you to the front page of my trip report.

There is a table of contents :rolleyes1 but if you go about halfway down & look for:

"Drop the rope already" you will read about our time in the luau "queue" waiting to get in.....

or you can skip that part & read "The meat of the luau" and read about our luau experience.

If you're so inclined to read all about it, ENJOY :dance3:

If not, in summary, I enjoyed the luau. I would recommend trying it at least once to form your own opinion if you have the time & money :thumbsup2

We went 2 years ago. In our opinion, show was corney - I agree with the Gidget/HS Musical comment. Dancers were very good representing the different dances of the different islands. That was the best part. Food was mediocre - food at 'Ohanas and Kona Cafe much better. We had an AP discount, so show was discounted, so guess it was ok. I would have been upset if I had paid full price! YMMV.

We have not been to HDDR.

We haven't been to the Luau in years but are planning on doing it in August/September since the HDDR won't be open. We will be on the Dining Plan so now I am wondering which category of seating we should book...2 or 3? In the past we have always had a nice, up front table so it stinks that won't be an option this time.

I've always wondered about this place as well. Thanks for the info!:thumbsup2

We loved Spirit of Aloha, our kids loved the fire dancers the most. The food is good and the kids loved the dessert. The only problem is that you're outside, under cover, but no air conditioning, so this might be a factor for you to consider in August - if the heat doesn't matter, than by all means go for it, you won't be disappointed!

We were there this past November and really enjoyed it. I'm a vegetarian and my son had some food issues (long story) and both were taken care of quite nicely. The service was excellent, the show very good, I can take it or leave it but my whole family loved it. Not cheap but it's all you can eat and that includes beer which makes my hubby happy.
