I'm getting nervous to fly Spirit Airlines, would love to hear your stories. I booked Spirit because it was the cheapest for our family of 4, roughtly saving $600 over the cost of Delta at the time of booking and $300ish over the cost that we pay on average for a delta flight.

However, I am 53 days from travel and already this weekend they threw me a curve ball. When I woke up on Saturday I saw an email that said they 'changed the times of our flights' They changed drastically from arriving at MCO at 1pm to arriving at 7pm and from departing MCO at 7pm to departing at 8am, basically ruining some of our reservations/plans. Luckily I was able to make a 1 time change to our schedule because of the change and I got more similar flight times. But what if that happens again??

Please tell me good stories about flying Spirit?? or if you had a bad experience did they do anything to resolve it??

Do a search on this forum. Some people do OK for others it's not good. Did you read the details on the extra fees, not even free water to drink, etc?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but poeple LOVE Spirit until something goes wrong. Then they discover the CEO meant it when he sent out an email saying "we don't do customer service" It's cattle car airline.

Have you prepaid for luggage and seats? If not I would do that now. Make sure your luggage is within the weight and size limits. Going over is COSTLY!

Yes we did all the extra things already, assigned seats on both routes and I selected 2 checked luggage and 1 carry on, plus I ordered the kids new backpacks that fit within the size regulations of the "personal item" we usually only check 1 bag and carry on 1 bag, so we should be okay with the luggage that I preordered. that was my biggest concern.

I had no idea that they could change your flight times a difference of 6-12 hours though!! That is what has me scared now, I really hope that they did that this far out and won't do it again :(

The good news is that anytime they make a significant change to the flight times they always give you the option to change them or cancel without penalty. So they may change the schedule but at least they'll give you options. The other things to be aware of is they are VERY strict on the 40lb weight limit (we've had to move things around over a pound) and there isn't much leg room. But the price is certainly right!

Have them booked into MYR end of June. Are they my airline of choice LOL no, but I'm hoping for the best results for my less than $100 RT, including luggage fee for 1 checked bag. Allegiant was triple the price or i'd have booked them in a flash.

Since Spirit prides themselves on a so-sad, too bad customer service policy, I didn't think they'd do as other airlines and permit cancelling a flight even if a large change in departure time.

We've flown them several times, but they have very limited flights available where I live and we've experienced up to 7 hour flight delays/canceled flights, using equipment issues as the excuse.

that said, I do book them when the price is ridiculously low (via $9 fare club) and I don't absolutely have to be somewhere that day or the next (ala a cruise ship).

Good luck OP!

I know, it surprised the heck out of me too! But it's happened to us twice now when they had a schedule change. Here's the email information they sent both times:

"If you wish to cancel or modify your reservation, you will not be charged a change fee or fare difference if:
  • You book the same departure and arrival airports
  • Your flight is rebooked within selected dates (choose 'Change reservation' to view dates with the same price)
NOTE: The change fee and any fare difference will be waived for the first modification that is made to this reservation. Any changes thereafter may be subject to applicable change fees and fare differences."

We've flown them with little issue. You get what you pay for and as long as you manage the weight of your luggage (they allowed us to combine the weights to avoid swapping from bag to bag), you can pre-print your own boarding pass and bring on your own snacks and drinks, they are a cheap alternative. Yes, you have less leg room in seats that do not recline, but for the price they charge what do you expect? We are flying them in May for $74 return PP (direct flights). Even if adding on a bag, we could not take a bus cheaper and they are at their worst way better than the bus. Delays, rescheduled flights, equipment delays happen on all airlines - people seem to be more vocal when they pay less and expect the same or more.

I've flown them in the past and it was fine. It's not as nice as I'd like, but it's the cheapest way to get to MYR for me. I find that for the most part, as long as you realize what you're getting into, you're fine. And you seem to have a handle on all the extras.

As some have mentioned, all beverages and snacks cost extra on board, so I recommend purchasing/bringing snacks before boarding. If you like things like a soda, make sure to grab that in the airport as well as the airport should be a better value (I also personally like the resealable packaging on a lot of it).

And like others have said, he checked bag weight limit is one of the things I struggled with. I am very good at getting so close to the 50 pound limit other airlines have, but spirit's is only 40 pounds! This was huge for me, and a real struggle.

Glad you were able to get new times that worked for you after the time change.

ok, thanks

it appears you have to rebook vs being able to cancel outright and receive a refund - if i'm reading your post correctly. It's my understanding that most airlines (even discount ones) will refund your original purchase price if they change flight time. Used to be able to switch things/cancel with Airtran often.

On Spirit air, if the change in flight schedule is more than a specified period of time (don't quote me but I think its an hour but maybe less) then they will refund your money. This happened to me in the fall and they gave me a full refund. That being said, their customer service is among the worst I've ever dealt with, frustrating to say the least. They barely speak English and put you on hold often and sometimes you need to escalate things to a supervisor to get something done), Thank god I very rarely need to deal with their customer service over the phone.

We use Spirit all the time. We have 4 children and honestly, spirit has been what has allowed us to go on vacation several times a year. People can't understand how I could possibly afford to go away so often, but great deals on Spirit (plus being a DVC member) is my answer. We fly out of Atlantic City and Philadelphia and have used them to Orlando, Fort Myers, Ft Lauderdale, Atlanta and Las Vegas. The only airport where I had a real issue is Ft Lauderdale (forgot to print boarding passes and had to pay $ to print at the counter. Probably my fault but man were they rude).

Yes, the seats are a bit smaller and closer together than other airlines, but not so small that my 6 foot 250 pound husband minds. As long as you know their rules and what things cost up front, you will be fine.
We never pay for a seat assignment and of the maybe 30 times we have flown with them the computer has always generated seat assignments on check in for us to sit together. I despise Southwest for their seating policy but will use them too when their price is right. lol.

When checking in a bag, they add the total weight of all the bags instead of 40 pounds per bag. (so if you check 2 bags, you get 80 pounds total...if one bag is 35 and the other is 45, you don't have to switch it over from one bag to the other). We are careful on this though and weigh the bags at home before departing for the airport and try not to add too many things when returning home if the weight was close on the way down.

Buying a couple bottles of water on the flight doesn't seem much different in price then buying them in the airport. Not a whole lot of snack options available for purchase though, so if this is important to you I would suggest bringing them with you. ( I think they sell m&m's, pringles, muffins, soup and maybe some kinda sandwich). They only take credit cards for snack purchases. For us, the flight is only usually 2 1/2- 3 hours so how much do we really need to eat/snack? Better to save my calories for all the yummy meals I have booked in WDW. I would rather pay a lot less for the flight then get a "free" bag of peanuts/pretzels and a soda. lol.

We don't pay for a carry on as it is more expensive than checked luggage. We take advantage of the free personal item, and everyone carries a backpack that fits under the seat. Since I have 4 kids, we often come home with lots of extra souvenirs. They have never said anything when we carry a backpack and a bag of souvenirs on with us. One time, my daughter purchased that super duper, giant Stitch stuffed animal and I wondered how we would get him home. She carried it on along with her backpack and they said nothing (we were somehow able to stuff him under the seat). I have, however, seen them stop people trying to carry on a suitcase that is too big and then they really get you for checking in luggage at the gate. Like I said, know their rules and you will be fine. If someone is trying to carry on a suitcase that does not comply with their rules, its their own fault. If you are unsure, pay to check it in ahead of time and save yourself some grief.

Often times (but not always) the late night flight home from Orlando is delayed. Sometimes by 20 minutes, other times by an hour. We don't mind, the longer in Orlando the better :-), we just check ahead of time to see if it is delayed and plan accordingly.

Most importantly, they have a good safety record and I dont feel like I am compromising the safety of my family just because I am getting a bargain.

I wrote this review on another thread earlier this month:

I just came back from my weekend and flying Spirit Air for the first time. It was a direct flight from Chicago to Tampa and I flew with my DD.

* I bought my DD a Ciao "under the seat" bag from Costco that fit perfectly in the sizer. I checked it near the Spirit counter outside security in case we had to rearrange things to make it less bulky. I used a backpack. If I were to fly Spirit again I would probably buy a Ciao bag for myself because packing the the backpack was a PITB and the Ciao bag had more room.

* I would probably pay to check one bag if I were on a longer trip.

* I checked in for my first flight 23 hours before my flight and allowed them to assign me "random seats". My DD and I were assigned 2 seats together in row 29 out of 30. I checked in about 18 hours before my flight on the way back and was randomly assigned 2 seats together in row 6.

* I printed out my boarding passes at home and went directly to my gate with no issues. My boarding pass indicated that I did NOT pay for a carryon bag, so you can't sneak one on without paying for it. I wasn't paying a lot of attention, did not see the gate agents checking luggage sizes at either airport. Unlike when we fly Delta, the overhead bins had plenty of room for our bags.

* The outbound flight was delayed about an hour. Apparently there was a delay in the equipment leaving Las Vegas to Minneapolis which delayed the flight from Minneapolis to Chicago. They turned the plane around very quickly. As we were meeting family at the TPA airport who were on a later flight the delay did not effect us at all.

* The leg room is less than that in legacy carriers. The seats do not recline. Even though I am overweight but I was perfectly comfortable. I was in an aisle seat on one flight and a window on the way back. I was able to stretch my legs out in front of me with no problem. As I usually don't recline (or maybe just a tiny bit if I do), I actually liked that the seat in front of me didn't recline into my face. My DD said that she couldn't sleep but she appeared to be asleep for most of the flights. If I were squished between two strangers I would probably be more uncomfortable on Spirit.

* We brought water bottles on board with us. We filled them once we were past security. Many people happily purchased snacks and drinks onboard. I can't remember how much everything cost but I didn't really think they were totally out of control.

* My DH's elderly uncle accompanied us on the way home from TPA. His Southwest flight was cancelled and they could not get him out of TPA on Sunday. He booked a one-way on Spirit (using my account) with us about 6 hours before flight time and his "random" seat was one row behind us. We indicated that he needed a wheelchair and when we got there the counter agent pointed to a bunch of waiting wheelchairs. My DH traveled on United with his other elderly aunt and uncle and they provided wheelchair pushers. Not Spirit ;). I had to push him myself. Not a big deal since I just had a backpack but I was amused. I wonder if the Spirit Airlines people are cheap tippers and the pushers don't bother to help. We boarded first with priority boarding which was nice. There was a wheelchair with a pusher available when we landed in Chicago.

In all, I would fly Spirit Airlines again. The 2-2.5 hour flight was just fine. I would have no problem driving to Chicago to fly it to TPA or MCO if the price was right. I think I would probably weigh the negatives against the price on longer flights.

Four days before our trip they cancelled our return flight and put us on a flight the next day. They never contact me about this I found it on my own when I decided at the last minute to pay for a seat assignment and could not located the return flight. Only to be told they decided not to fly that route that day and that is why the return flight got cancelled! They did refund our money.

Gosh! As long as we get down to Disney though I'll be happy, I don't mind having to figure out the way home, just don't want to miss all our Disney/universal plans!!

I've flown them several times dtw to mco without any major issues. You just got to go into it knowing that it's a cheap airline, no frills for sure. Since it's a 2 hour flight it's no big deal to me. The savings is worth the extra hassle. At the end of the day it's a flight taking you from one place to another.

This is so typical of Spirit Airlines! Two years in a row, they changed our times & we lost 2 full days of vacation because of it.( late evening arrival the first night and early morning departure the last day). They stuck it to us a week before departure. Hated it the first time and were foolish enough to try again and experienced the same issue again. We will never use them again. This is typically how they operate! They don't care. They even left the airport 20 minutes earlier than departure was listed! When we asked about it , they really didn't care if everyone was on board!

AND they only allow 40 lbs per bag vs. 50 (on Delta/Southwest). I used to LOVE them and was a $9 club member and big advocate - but would be my last choice (unfortunately) now. $30 pp for luggage rt; another $10-20 per seat assignment - starts to add up quickly. Makes my Delta flight very comparable (but then again I have the AE free bag cc)

Every airline can do that. You're lucky they had another flight they can put you on.

I have never had that happen on any other airline. Delays the day of are one thing, but changing the schedule so radically weeks in advance in not standard practice with airlines.

I didn't say it's common, just that airlines COULD.
