We were considering joining the $9 fare club with Spirit, but I have a question. I hope this all makes sense.

We completely understand that Spirit charges for everything - carryons, snacks, pop, etc. We know the policy of the airline. We are okay with all of this if we can get a good deal on airfare.

We are looking at flights that say "eligible" for the $9, but when you hit purchase, it appears that the flight is still about $86. We have NOT purchased our fare club membership yet, but the price breakdown shows the flight price - $86, the membership fee, the fuel surcharge, the government fees, etc. Has anyone joined the club? Just because it is eligible, does the fare not necessarily come to $9?

Any insight would be most appreciated.

You've got it! $9 flights are never $9 when you add in the fees! The taxes must be added onto the ticket price. The government recently changed the rules and now the airlines have disclose all the fees upfront.

The $9 fares are usually good deals if you happen to see one that works for you. Once you pay the fee to join anyone on your reservation will get the $9 fare price and luggage discounts (i.e. not every person needs to be a member as long as your entire group is under the same reservation.
