Spirit Airline to charge up to $45 for...CARRYON!

If everyone would use common sense and bring a small carry-on instead of trying to stuff huge ones in the bins the airlines wouldn't try to charge people for them.

A carry-on bag is a carry-on bag. It shouldn't be anyone's business what bag I carry as long as is "carry-on approved". But again, this is why the AIRLINES HAVE TO ENFORCE THE RULES." Its not the passenger's job to enforce jack.

I wonder how long it will be before this industry flushes itself down the tubes along with so many others?

What part of retraction do these businesspeople not get? The lowest price is going to win right now, and if a company is not healthy enough to ride this out they will be gone, survival of the fittest.

Scrolling down the page, I misread the title... I thought it said "Spirit Airline to charge up to $45 for ... CRAYON" :rotfl2:

When I flew on an airline in China two years ago, people were handed a plastic bag when they checked in. If the carry on fits in the bag, it goes on the plane. If not, it goes in the hold (there were no charge for baggage). I find it a lot more efficient than cramming your carry on in that metal basket at the gate to prove that it fits.

An interesting side note--there isn't enough O/H space to accomodate bags for every passenger.

The overhead bins have alwasy been available and were always intended (or so I thought) for items that were small enough to carryon, but too large for under the seat. My roller bag fits in the O/H and fits in the measuring device at the counter....but the logistics of maneuvering it to get it under the seat are a challenge.

While it may be a challenge, if it doesn't fit under the seat in front of you, it is probably too big. I still think that I shouldn't be penalized for bringing a smaller carry-on by losing my legroom (something very important to me because of knee issues I have) because someone brought a roller-bag too big to fit under THEIR seat. Now, if they want to put my backpack under THEIR seat (after I've put my travel lock on it!), I'd be willing to discuss that option ;)

(Note...I'm really only playing devil's advocate here...since I'm usually flying with two scrawny, short kids, I just stick our carryon under THEIR seats - I'd rather have it available at all times, anyway! But, I still think I that, between the three of us, we should be entitled to about 1 square foot of overhead space if we wanted it!!!)

If airlines could guarantee that my bags would be at my destination when I get there, I would happily stop packing every little thing I can to carry on.

So basically, pay for your check in bag, we can't guarantee we will get it there ,but if you don't check it in, you will pay more to carry it on! And since you barely have any legroom now as as it is... well.... Lovely.......

I would much rather pay a bit more for the fare. Im just tired of getting places WITHOUT my luggage!!

It is (or should be) the passenger's job to obey the rules. The issues with carry-on bags has almost become an entitlement to some. It's pretty plainly posted in most instances exactly what carry-on dimensions are..it's up to people to follow the rules; not stuff their bag until is far exceeds the original size. It's called personal accountability.

Do airlines in the US really lose that much luggage? Between my DH and I, we've probably been on over 500 flights in the last 10 years. Only once did DH's luggage get lost for good (the empty suitcase was found on the skytrain in Vancouver, obviously stolen by luggage handlers), and maybe five times we've had to wait at most 24 hours for luggage to be delivered. We were reasonably compensated for the lost bag, and the airlines seemed really efficient on getting our delayed bags to us.:confused3

In the past year, Ive flown 8 round trips, 6 with checked in bags. The airline has lost my luggage 3 times. Once, I got the luggage that night, another 2 days later, another, got it back the day I was leaving. One trip was business and the other 2 were vacations. In fact, the one that I got back that night had "fallen off" the belt and was apparently sitting on the tarmac until someone happened to come across it... I seem to have very bad luck with lost luggage.

Ive become rather proficient at packing light so I can carry on to prevent the headaches of lost bags.

My BIL travels a lot for business. His issue is with cancelled or missed connections. That is when he has issues. His bags would always happen to get messed up when his flight was cancelled and he was put on a new one. Easier to have your stuff with you and assure that they stay with you! Its a lot easier to get rebooked when not dealing with checked bags.

I hate being in the last boarding groups because the passengers in the back of the plane, for some odd reason, put their carryons in the bins over the seats in the front. That annoys me to no end!

If the airline would actually enforce the carry-on size restrictions then there shouldn't be issues. LIke I said earlier, I was so please with AA actually enforcing the rules.

We always sit in the seats as afr back as we can and put our carryons right above us. It never occurred to me to put our luggage upfront. I'd probably forget which bin it was in if I did! But really, to me, it is terribly inconsiderate for people to stow their things in a bin over someone else's seat.

My husband and I have been together for 30 years and we've had luggage misplaced twice, so I don't think it's a very common occurrence. Some airports do have a reputation though losing bags.

That is truly atrocious!!! I sure hope you didn't pay extra to check those bags;)! Is that really that common on US airlines, or are you particularly unlucky?!

Im beginning to think I just have bad luck, or the Philadephia airport hates me! LOL!

We're right there with you. We had our bags lost nearly every time we check them. We quit checking bags back in 2006 because of this. They are well-identified, we are careful to remove previous airport tags, but still, our bags never seem to end up where we do. :confused3

Most of the time it has happened coming home, so it's not a HUGE deal; the bag is brought to our house a few days later. But the year it happened to us going to Europe was a BIG problem. We had to go out and buy clothes (what we were wearing coming from Alabama in August, where it was over 100 degrees, was totally inadequate for where we landed, as it was about 50. We were FREEZING!) Our luggage finally caught up to us 3 days later, but wow, what a PITA!!

And...if they don't want you to carry stuff on, what are you supposed to do to entertain your kids on the flight? Will they be providing toys and games so my kids will sit quietly? I think not. ;) Heck, maybe they should pay ME for bringing enough stuff to keep them occupied for the duration of the flight so they don't bother others - lol. (of course I'm kidding, but I don't expect to pay for the small bag they each bring with stuff to do. They stow it under the seat for takeoff and landing, but otherwise they have it in their laps, using it, so it's not taking up any bin space.)

The space between the seats is restricted--and ifthere are other passengers in the seat--they probably won't appreciate me beating them up. As I said, DD put her carryon suitcase under her seat, but it required utilizing the legroom portions of her sisters seat to get the bag down on the floor and then turn and slide it under the seat. It was a major production.

Suffice it to say--For decades I have traveled with said carryon.

It's funny that now--people are ticked about it. What's the purpose of an overhead compartment, though if we should all realistically cram the crap under our seats.:confused3

I'm sure that next up, carryons must only be in "squishable" luggage.

But when a company allows folks to get away with stuff they shouldn't--when they are perfectly capable of checking at the gate and then requiring a gate check of items that got snuck through.....

They are taking the lazy way out by charging for that privilege--since they'll now have to do all that size checking that they should have been doing for well over 30 years.

I have absolutely no problem with you travelling with said carryon, as long as you don't expect ME to put my one and only smaller bag under MY seat just because yours won't fit under your seat. :)

I hate when people do this too, but I've seen it often. I guess people think that it will be easy when they are getting off to grab their bag close to the front of the plane and just walk off. When the front rows are boarded last, there is little that you can do if you get on and there is no space left. It's another one of those I think I'm more important than the rest of the worldtype attitudes that people have nowadays.

How much stuff do you need to bring on a plane to entertain your kids? I can't imagine anyone needing a bag larger than what fits under the seat to put toys in.

ETA: Nevermind, I finished reading it. lol
