I'm really kinda upset at Spirit - their website says that they will only guarantee taking one check in per person and that you will have to pay for that priviledge too! But it also doesn't say what they will do for people travelling from Mar 6 - June 20 - I'm assuming that they won't charge for one bag??? What do you think? I bought my tickets this week for travel May 31st....on top of this they are going to charge $1 for pop or juice too!
"For customers who purchased tickets prior to December 15, 2006, for each ticketed passenger, Spirit Airlines will transport two (2) bags as checked luggage free of charge. For customers who purchased tickets between December 15, 2006 and March 6, 2007, Spirit Airlines will transport one (1) piece of luggage at no charge per fare-paying customer. For customers who purchased tickets on or after March 6, 2007 for travel on or after June 20, 2007, charges will apply to each item transported as checked luggage.

Spirit Airlines can only guarantee the transportation of one (1) item as checked luggage per fare paying customer. Additional bags will be accepted only when reserved in advance on www.spiritair.com. If not reserved, Spirit cannot guarantee that there will be space for additional bags and will not be held responsible for any additional items brought to the airport by the customer. Please note that space is extremely limited on certain flights into select markets and may rarely be available in the markets listed below.**"

This doesn't surprise me at all...I saw a news story about Spirit airlines and they are basically trying to offer services a la carte. The only thing you buy when you buy a ticket is a seat on the plane, if you want food/beverage, then you pay for it, if you want to transport luggage, then you pay for it. I think they were even joking about having coin operated toilets:laughing: but I don't think they were serious about that;) . I would contact the airline directly to get the scoop on travel for the time you're concerned with.

When it first came out, it was $5.00 per bag. I don't know if that is still the going rate, though.

I do'nt see what the big deal is. Do the math, if it's cheaper to fly another carrier, than do so. My guess is that it will be less expensive to fly Spirit. So you've got to check and extra bag or two for $5 each. If you're saving $40 per ticket for four tickets, you're way ahead, even after you buy four $1 drinks onboard.

I got 2 round trip tickets from Atlanta to Orlando for a total of $74. I called about the bags...you get 1 check in per person up to 50 lbs free. Plus one carry on. I can deal with that. I've flown with them and thought they had great service.

I am so confused what are they charging for again, extra bags?

We've flown Spirit many times to Orlando and used to be a big fan of them. But lately they seem to be nickel and diming the customer like crazy.

They used to issue you a credit for a future trip if the price of your ticket went down after you bought the ticket. Now they want to charge you $50 per ticket just to issue a credit :scared1:

They also now are charging people a membership fee just to be able to book their low cost fares.

I know they're a business and have to make a profit, but they are really not the bargain they used to be.

i just flew them the other week. the bag fees go into effect in june. what i was told was that it is 1 checked bag free. any others are 5$ each BUT you have to know this at the TIME of making your ressie. if you do not know how many bags you will have over 1, then the fee is $10 payable at time of check in. 1 carry on is free.since they are trying to lure customers in w/ lower flying prices then this is what they have to do in order for them to make money...

If you check in online, your bag is $5 for the first, $5 for the second. If you do it at the airport, it's $10 for the first and $10 for the second.

I am flying round trip from NY to DTW for three people and the TOTAL cost with the purchase of the $9 membership fee is $125.00. That is a STEAL! If I have to pay $15 to check three bags and $2 for juice on the flight, it's still a STEAL!

That would be perfect for DH. When he flies down all he brings is his small backpack as a carry-on with his laptop and a folder of business paperwork, plus a magazine. No checked bag at all.

He's got clothes, toiletries, even cell phone and lap top chargers and a spare pair of reading glasses both in NJ and here. If he could get $40/rt airfares he'd come home every weekend! And if he was thirsty he'd spring for the $1 soda.
