Spelling Issues

Yup, Topamax would be the one :headache:

I am on it because they discovered I had a minor stroke believed to be caused from migraines. So the migraines need to be prevented to prevent any future strokes. :sad2: So...I'm on 50mg a day right now, but they want me to up to an eventual 100 mg. They promise the side effects will lessen within a few months I hope they are right, otherwise, my students are going to think I'm crazy!

My apologies for hijacking the thread... But,

The tingling will get better. The best side effect is that a lot of people lose weight after taking it. My Dr. said the memory issues do not so he took me off. They are thinking I need to try again, but stay at a lower dose. It does not work as well for most at the lowere dose. I'm sorry you have migraines. I have a lot of them (They got worse about 10 yrs ago), and I would not wish it on anyone. Have you had them long?

Is anyone concerned with the decline in our spelling skills? I mean I know this is an informal forum and all, but I have noticed lots of spelling errors that are clearly not typos. To me there is a difference between a typo and a spelling issue. I have noticed words like "coming" and "schedule" spelled "comming" and "schedual". And some are part of peoples' signatures! Are we becoming so dependent on spell check that we are forgetting basic spelling skills?:confused3 Just wondering.....

I think it is sad that spelling skills are so poor. This is just my opinion but I think, regardless of how smart you are, if you are a poor speller, you look dumb.

It's not something I notice too much on a message board; if someone's post title is off or they've misspelled a word several times, I might mention it.

It's funny you said that because what prompted me to start this thread was I was reading several responses from this one poster who repeatedly misspelled the same word. (This poster was being rude also by the way). And I simply mentioned something about their spelling skills and I got a warning from the moderator. Have you ever received a warning for mentioning spelling? I wonder if that person got a warning for being rude since I got one for mentioning spelling.....:confused3

Well considering 98% of your posts have been on political threads on the CB, where the temprture is way past the boiling point, and then there is this happy thead.

Your busy for a newbie, just registered and got yer first warning. :grouphug:

I've been posting on this DIS for a long time and I have noticed that the spelling and punctuation errors in posts have gotten much worse within the last 6 months to a year. Like the OP menetioned, these are obviously not typos because the same words are consistently misspelled by the same people. I don't understand it and while I'm not losing any sleep over it, I do wonder why this is. :confused3

If you're going to be critiquing poster's spelling, I think you should double check your grammar and punctuation before you hit submit. ;)
That's right ;)

I'm not sitting in a classroom right now - and would really prefer not to be treated as though I am.. I'm chatting - not taking a spelling test...
The OP simply asked if anyone was concerned with the decline in spelling skills and people are acting as if they were personally attacked. It was just a question.

I don't get concerned by typos but where people use the wrong word, even if it is a synonym, then I find it irritating and will sometimes point it out. How can you learn if nobody corrects your mistakes?

In the example above, "your" should be "you're" in order to make any sense.
The other day someone used "phase" when the meant "faze".
People spell "due" as "do" which probably imitates their accent.
I often see "queue" spelt as "que" or "cue".
South of the "border" is not a "boarder".
A "moot" point is not a "mute" point.
"Woe" is me is not "whoa" is me.

If people don't appreciate a friendly reminder then fine, so be it.
As to why this seems to be on the increase I wonder if the fall in reading is causing the problem as people use words in writing that they have never read but only heard?

Every now and then that happens. No capitalization,

This is the one area where I do find some difficulty.. Without capitalization it becomes very hard to read sentences that seem to be running all together.. However, I would still not point it out to the poster - or use it as a means of not validating their statements (as I have seen some people do - not you in particular, but others)..

That's right ;)

You are correct - and I apologize for my response.. It just seems as though this topic comes up a minimum of every other week and it invariably ends up with someone stating that incorrect spelling on a message board is a sign of ones lack of intelligence..

To the OP, I apologize if I came across harshly..

That is why I changed my topic. I felt as if my blood pressure was suffering as a result of getting caught up in conversations I really didn't need to be a part of. So what do you think about texting maybe being an issue with spellers these days? Do you ever catch yourself shortening words when you text? I know I am guilty of doing it.:flower3:

I understand. I can see why posters would be on the defensive if their intellegence had been questioned on previous threads. Please know that was not my intentions. I recently joined the disboards, got caught up in some not-so-pleasant threads, and now I am just looking for a more light hearted discussion. :cloud9:

No, I haven't gotten points for it. But I do try to not be snarky about it. My DH is dyslexic, and his spelling is atrocious! Lucky for him he married an English major. :lmao: I have sympathy for the posters who obviously have a problem like that.

I agree with you. Hope you don't mind that I am pointing out improper use of the word "spelt."

stashbin? You HAVE to be a teacher! I think you are dead on with your comments. You are truly a breath of fresh air. I have been keeping my eye on you and your comments and I believe you have a sense of what this world needs. You seem to be a very opinionated person and I think that is a good quality to have. It sounds like you only want what's fair! Even if it is to spell correctly!!!!!:thumbsup2  Let's just all get along!!!!!

It's also one of my pet peeves. While I admit that I make mistakes at times, it is frustrating to see so many blatant errors. (But that's probably just my O.C.D. kicking in!) :lmao:

Speaking of points...what is that about? Can you fill me in?

That's exactly what I want to do...discuss topics, meet new dis-friends, and get along. Thank you for the kind words.princess:

Maybe that's what I have too!??! Maybe that is why I notice things like that even when I don't mean to. :teacher:

The one that always jumps out at me is "could of" instead of "could have".

That said, I make plenty of typos & spelling errors of my own. And I can't even blame mine on texting- I never do that.
