just write them the way they sound to you? It's just a curious question because I am compulsive about spelling and have been my whole life -- who knows why:confused: but I am. When I see words that are obviously misspelled and are very common, it makes me cringe. (weird maybe, but it does) I'm not talking about tricky words or just typos, but relatively easy words that are not that difficult to figure out how to spell. So, do you read over what you write before hitting send or just send......

If you have read many of my posts, you know that I am not good at reading over what I have typed. Of course, never taken a typing course can be blamed. RIGHT?

Well, since I'm a journalist by trade, I tend to proofread all my posts numerous times before sending. Sometimes I'm in a rush though and I hit the "send" button before proofreading, then I have to go and edit my post later. :)

I judge my own misspellings, not others. However, if I see on the boards where someone is criticizing someone else for misspelling, I will purposely misspell words just to irritate them (I'm very spritish sometimes).:teeth: One of my pet peeves if for others to openly criticize others for misspelling things. It's not like we're having a spelling bee here or anything.

I hit send a lot without proofing.;) I love the edit button.:p

Spelling has always been one of my strong suits. It irks me to no end when one of my kids spells something wrong. I've learned because of frequenting the boards to control myself because sometimes you type faster than you think and hit that "submit reply" button before you read over what you've typed. Does that sound right?

i am generally a good speller, but i'm not so great of a typer. i try to proofread, but sometimes i miss things or i'm in a hurry.

the two i see here a lot are loose instead of lose and sight instead of site.

OK, I won't mention anything then.;) :smooth: (j/k)

ltldeb: I know EXACTLY what you mean

If somebody is trying to make an intelligent point (or in a case in another post, criticize someone else's intelligence) then I feel it is important that his/her spelling is correct. Typos are usually obvious and I can see past that but obvious errors such as mixing up "no" and "know" or "then" and "than" or "there" and "their" display a lack of knowledge and cause me to wonder about the intelligence of the poster and the credibility of the post.

I try to spell correctly but I am a terrible typist. Sometimes my fingers go where my mind hasn't or vice versa, not sure which, and I end up with badly spelled words. To me, these are typos. The bad thing is, if I know I have done it I have to go back and correct it. I can't stand for anyone to think I can't spell. LOL! I drive my daughter and friends nuts when we chat because I am constantly retyping things. =0)

I'm pretty AR about spelling and try to double-check everything for typos (heck, I'll even go look up a word if I'm not positive whether or not I'm spelling it right).

www.dictionary.com is a wonderful thing! :teeth:

I usually type things in Word before posting (unless it’s just a few words), so I can use the spelling checker.

I totally agree. I was the spelling bee winner all the time in school and am a secretary by profession, so it's a big deal to me. Not just misspellings, though. But things like "it's" and "its" being interchangeable, and people saying "I seen" instead of of "I saw" can drive me crazy!

I cringe, but I don't correct anyone. ;)

My SO is a horrible speller, but I don't judge his intelligence on if he can spell or not. I bet you could check out the geniuses of the past, present, future and find out several of them are horrible spellers. Not that my SO is a genius though.:p He's not an unintellectual either.:) He'll ask me about the no, know, then, than, there, their sometimes.

I've learned if you're critical of others for their spelling or grammar mistakes, it might come around and bite you on the butt sometime.;) Who knows, someone might point out pronoun misusage or something like that.;)

I do have the tendency to spell things here the way I say them conversationally IRL. Y'all instead of the plural of you, gonna for going to, kinda for kind of, swimmin' instead of swimming, etc. Yee Haw for YAH.;) I even catch myself starting sentences with a conjunction or ending my sentences with prepositions.:o

*Spritish*???? I used SteveH's dictionary link and found: No entry found for spritish. But the first of 302 *suggestions* was saber rattling and I understand that, so I think I understand what you meant. ;)

Must be something in the air lately. The CruiseBoard People started this topic last week. If you stick with it, some of the posts are quite funny. Check it out: Annoying things...and not just grammar.....

I'm Southern.;) I make up my own words.;) Spritish means the same as impish or elfish.:p

I don't spell well, I try to use spell check or something but I'm sure many slip by. I often miss words or put the wrong form of a word, sometimes I even leave out parts of sentence. I'll usually catch it if I reread but sometimes even then I read what I think it says other than what it really says. My 11yo DD does the same things and I work with her on that for papers.

My 8yo DD is dyslexic and has even a harder time putting words together.

I would never judge someone's intelligence on thier spelling & usage of grammer. One of my nephews (also dyslexic) is in college and still has trouble putting together a coherent sentence but thinks Calculus 4 is easy. His IQ tests have always placed him about genius level.

Walt Disney is among famous people with dyslexia who have achieved success :) He probably didn't spell well either.

Thanks for the explanation BE. You had me chuckling there. Mind if I incorporate *spritish* into my own speech? ;)

Well Browneyes, I guess you can always go back and edit.;)

DS (14) is a terrible speller as well. However, he would never hand anything in without having it checked first. If you are trying to make an impression then I feel that you should have your work checked. If you don't care then it doesn't matter! With all of the editing devices available today, there really is no need for glaring errors in a situation where impression matters.

Sure, TR.:p I have more made up words if you want to use some more.:teeth:

Janette, I didn't know that about Walt.

LOL, Damo.:teeth: The good thing about having edit is if you're quick enough, you can repair the damage before someone quotes you.;)
