if the speed limit is 65, what do you set your cruise control at to be pretty sure that you wont get a ticket?

My husband would say 74, I say 70.

That would depend upon my knowledge of the local tolerances for speed. In some places, anything under 10mph over the stated limit is perfectly acceptable, in others it's 5mph over the stated limit and in a few places it's 0 mph over the stated limit.

In the area I'm currently living in I do about 10mph over the limit except on one stretch of highway, where it is widely and publically known that the tolerances are lower due to several wrecks, so there I do about 3-6 mph over the limit, depending upon how heavy the traffic is that day and weather conditions.

It depends if the speed limit is on the interstate or a state high way
On the interstate, I do not go more than 9 miles over
On a state rode, I will not go more than 5 miles over

I usually set my cruise at 5 miles over the posted speed limit -- so 70 mph.

However, way back in 1970, I actually got a ticket on a highway in Maryland for going 5 miles over the speed limit -- the only speeding ticket I've ever gotten.

I have gotten a ticket for going 72 in a 65 last year. Going the speed of traffic in the fast lane. The cops even pulled over the guy in front of and behind me.

72 if I know the road and where the speed traps are :cool2:

69 otherwise - sometimes the sight of a "7" is enough to get you pulled over :confused3

My quarks are:
Highway = Not more than 9 over, usually only 5 over though.
City = Speed limit, maybe 4-5 over, but usually speed limit. Cops are ruthless around here. I had a friend get pulled over going 27 in a 25.

Depends where I am

Around here usually between 70-74. If I'm driving through Virginia 69, maybe 68 just in case.

When I was a senior in high school I was with a sheriff's officer (I volunteer taught DARE at grammer schools) and I remembe very specifically him telling me that he never pulled anyone over for doing less than 15 miles over the speed limit, probably not what you should tell an 18 year old :rolleyes1

I agree that tolerances vary. On local streets, I try to stay within the posted limits, for a posted 65 MPH I might do 69. On the Florida's Turnpike or I-75 where the posted limit is 70, you get run over if your not doing at least 78, and you will still have lots of people passing you. I'm not a fan of cruise control, though. I like having control of the car myself and I can usually match or better the gas mileage that cruise control gets.

If it's a road with which I'm not familiar, I would first operate the vehicle by engaging foot-to-gas-pedal. Once a typical speed has been determined - i.e. when you can tell what speed most of your fellow drivers are using - then I would set cruise control for that speed. Maybe five minutes?

It all depends on the circumstances and how traffic is moving around me. On a regularly traveled highway, my cruise is pretty much set at the speed limit (70mph). But when I drive in or near Detroit, cruising along at 70mph will get me killed. In those situations, I just don't engage the speed control and move along with traffic which varies wildly between 85mph (typical) and 65mph (lots of traffic) and 5mph (rush hour parking lot).

Exactly! When we lived in Vegas 10 over the speed limit is normal, they aren't going to pull you over for going with the flow, they won't waste their time. Last week in CA the normal seemed 15 over the limit. However, where I live, if the speed limit is 35 I don't dare go over 36!!!! That is no lie. They pull people over here left and right and our speed limits are soooo slow. I have had friends pulled over for 4 over the limit, no lie. THey highly enforce our limits, if it says 35 I do 35. OUr freeway is 65, 60 is some places and that is what I do. There is one stretch where it is 70 and you should see the faces of the people once we reach that sign, it's like freedom!!!! :rotfl:

Just don't over do it the last few days of the month. They are out in force here.

If the speed limit is 65, then it would be set at 65..
