speed limit

Usually 71 in a 65. Usually, no more than 5 or 6 miles over the limit.

Dawn- I drive the same roads you do- do you get alot of ragers on you at that speed? Average speed on 91 around your area is about 85. Even when I'm driving 80 people are dusting me. People drive :scared: in CT.

:eek:I am shocked and appauled:scared1:at all but 1 of you:lmao:

This is the Dis, the correct and ONLY answer is 65:rolleyes1 the rest of you law breakers deserve a ticket:rotfl2: and the harshest penalties the law allows.

Really......what to set the cruise at, aye yi yi.......some people think they are just above the law:rotfl:

if the speed limit is 65, what do you set your cruise control at to be pretty sure that you wont get a ticket?
64 if I am driving a red car or a convertible.

I'm not kidding. I've been stopped for going ONE MILE over the speed limit on multiple occasions. I can speed all I want if I am driving the white minivan.

Northern Louisiana is particularly bad around Lake Providence and Tallulah. The speed limit drops from 65 to 55 on Highway 65. You still see all of these "65" signs so subconsciously can think it is still the speed limit.

A friend in Baton Rouge (capital of Louisiana) confirmed that more tickets are issued in that parish than anyplace else.

Driving in Oklahoma with Texas tags is also another almost surefire way to get stopped for going a mile over the speed limit.

It really depends on the area, but to be safe I would say 70; however, if you are going faster than everyone else, drop it to 67 or 68.

Generally I go with the "flow" of the traffic.

I wish more of the interstates were like that between Lincoln and Omaha (Nebraska). They are working on making it 3 lanes each way, and 75 MPH the entire way. It's our own little "express way" and it really cuts down the time between the two cities.

I would like all the interstates to all be 75 the second your are out of the city limits.

It really depends on the time of day or night and where I am.
In SC and VA I would never go over the speed limit, I set at the limit. I have seen too many people who passed me going a few over get stopped a bit down the road in those states.
In the middle of the night I usually set 10 MPH over, from 7 am to 10 am and 3 pm to 6 pm about 5 over.
Normally on my way down to FL I can do 5-10 over the limit but I try to stay in the far right lane. Even when you go faster in the right lane they tend to go after speeders in the left. I have come on people who are in the left or middle who think that since they are going the limit they can stop everyone behind them. In that case I pass on the right.
I do agree with Youarehere, in CT the speed limit seems to be 30 miles over the limit.
Yesterday I had to drive to New Haven and had my cruise set on 65, 10 mph over the limit. I was in the far right lane and people were speeding past me like I was goign 30. I actually had to check my speed a few times since it was happening not only by the younger crowd but an old man with a hat....

I agree that tolerances vary. On local streets, I try to stay within the posted limits, for a posted 65 MPH I might do 69. On the Florida's Turnpike or I-75 where the posted limit is 70, you get run over if your not doing at least 78, and you will still have lots of people passing you. I'm not a fan of cruise control, though. I like having control of the car myself and I can usually match or better the gas mileage that cruise control gets.

I missed my cruise control when it had to be disabled due to a recall. especially going thru a construction zone on the interstate. Almost got a ticket there once. Luckily the speed camera wasn't there. I went down to construction speed but drifted up to normal speed without realizing it. When I realized it I was at the spot the van usually sits. Avoided a $375 fine that day.

"When in Rome" is what I would like to say, but alas I am also one who actually got a ticket for going only 4 miles over the limit so I am hesitant to speed. (they pulled 5 vehicles over at the same time) Now, if I am in the city I drive as fast as the person in front of me but I don't have the cruise set.

I did notice that the past 3 trips on I-10 there were a lot of patrol units on the road and they were pulling people over at a rapid pace.

Okay, I don't advocate or not advocate driving over the speed limit... but I also don't see what is wrong with driving at (or even a bit below) the speed limit when NOT in the passing lane. After all - isn't the speed limit the maximum allowable speed based on road conditions and locations?

Where I live, 71 because I know you can go 5 mph over the speed limit without getting pulled over. If I'm in a strange area, I follow the local traffic patterns unless they are driving unusually fast and tailgate.

I agree. I don't see a middle lane as a passing lane, so why couldn't someone go the speed limit there?

I grew up in Atlanta- the norm there is to go 15 miles above the speed limit at all times!!:lmao: We are all a bunch of speeders down South.

DH travels all over the SE USA and stays at a steady 78mph, whether the speed limit is 60, 65, or 70. The only exception is VA, where he slows down to 73-75- he got a ticket in VA a few years ago for doing 78 in a 65 zone. He has only been pulled over one other time- here in NC, late in the evening, doing about 80 in a 65 zone (he was in a hurry to get home after a few days out of town). He didn't get a ticket- just a warning.

I pretty much keep the cruise set on 70 in a 60 or 65 zone. In a 70mph zone, I push it up to 72-73. I am not a speed demon.

I hear the states have figured out how to balance the budget.

The rule of the road is supposed to be that slower traffice moves right in multi-lane expressway/autoban/interstate/freeway kind of roads and that faster traffic moves left. In some states you can be fined for doing the stated speed limit in the left-hand lane if you are impeding the flow of traffic and thus raising the possibility of accidents on the part of others. The speed limit is the stated legal limit for a speed. However, police may choose to enforce or not enforce this limit, as while to a certain point the law is for safety, but at another certain point it is, I do believe, a malum prohibitum law. That is, it is wrong because legislation prohibits it, not because the act is evil.

(Now, if I could only teach a class in my current city of residence on not driving in the left-hand or passing lane! For some reason that DH and I cannot fathom, a great number of people in our current small metropolitan area seem to believe that driving in the innermost left hand lane at 5 or 10 mph below the flow of traffic is completely acceptable, especially if one is on a cell phone. And for some reason that is really and truly unknowable, about 85%-90% of the individuals practicing this bad habit in our town are female. I would love to figure out what has caused this behavioral pattern, but doubt I shall ever have the chance.)

Well, if it's the Jersey turnpike, you better be going as fast as the car can go, so the guy behind doesn't run right over you! ;)
