We just arrived back from the 3-night Wonder cruise and we went to the
DVC Member "event" on boarding day (ok...it was raining and the kids couldn't swim so there wasn't anything else to do). We were not interested in adding on and just hung out and gots lots of free stuff.
FF to day 2 of the cruise where we decided to check out the "special" price on a 7-day cruise for next summer for 2A and 2K. Price for a Cat 5 was well over $8000! Now, the only other time we have taken a 7-day was on points (almost 8 years ago) so the sticker shock factor was high. The 3-day we just returned from in a Cat 5 was only $2300 (Florida Resident Special) and we only booked 2 weeks before sailing!
**here comes the justification part**
My DH thought back to the DVC presentation and said "why throw $8000 down the drain if we can get the cruise we want out AND have the benefit of adding on the points?". Surprised the heck out of me since he is usually quite the frugal one on things like this. So, we went to see Tony, the DVC rep on board, and discussed how we could eek out the cruise with the incentives and it all seemed to work!
Purchased 200 points at AKV
200 developer points (which he SAID we could use to book the cruise)
230 points from existing FEB 09 OKW
gives us a total of 630 points.
The "call within 3-days of returning from your cruise" price for the 7-day Tortula/St.Thomas cruise for Cat 5 in July of '09 is 340 pts per adult for a total of 680 points. I have some points left from this year that I was going to bank that may cover the extra 50 we need --give or take a few.
We will use the $1000 gift card to pay for the two kids cruise on "cash price" which should come close to covering their cost.
So, in the end instead of "flushing" the $8k away that we would have by just paying for the cruise we are working the current incentives to at least put that same money towards MANY future vacations.
