I have not flown in awhile, not since, all of the new guidelines came about. I understand your only allowed one quart size bag with your hairgel, etc...but how do you pack all of your other items, shampoo, shaving cream, mousse, gel, hairspray, all those products. Are you just buying all travel size of everthing and then putting it in one suitcase to get checked? I just want tips. I was the one lugging all of my hair products with me on my carry on. I was just curious how you did it especially if its a long trip and you need alot of those items. Any tips will be appreciated ;)

Hi,

You have no choice..if you want them in your carry-on they need to be travel size, but you can put any size liquid in your checked baggage.

I put them in a ziplock bag, inside another ziplock bag, in my checked luggage ... so far no mishaps with the bottles leaking.

Shorty2313, you can pack most everything you need in your checked suitecase but if you want to put it in your carryon bag you have to use travel size in a plactic bag and I think it a specific sized bag too. I just don't know what size. You can check on your airlines website for a list of exceptable carry-on items. Have a great trip.

That's what I do, put one day's worth (travel sizes or samples from websites/magazines/mail) into the quart-size ziploc in the carryon - just in case - and then pack the regular stuff sealed in plastic bags inside a plastic shoebox I bought at walmart 942 years ago. That's just to keep it from getting squeezed, since i have softsided luggage. Haven't ever really had a problem with it. If i'm going for a week or so I just buy a bottle of suave for 97 cents and throw out the rest when we checkout, but then I have never been one to use 'the good stuff.' You can check as much hair stuff/lotion/shower gel as you wish into your checked baggage, it's only the carryons that have the restriction.

There is the 3-1-1 rule for your carry-on

Everything liquid has to be in quantitites 3oz or less, in 1 quart size plastic ziplock bag, one bag per person.

I bought travel size items to carry on. Then I packed more travel size or full size items that were nearly gone in my checked baggage. It was a pain, but we had plenty of toiletries and I was able to toss my full size items that were nearly gone to make more room in the suitcase coming back.

There are also special rules for liquid medications that you carry on. You need to declare them at security and they should be ok. Also they will let you take juice boxes for kiddos but no water bottles for anyone. Water bottles will be tossed at security. However, once past security, you can buy water at the airport and take it, along with any other food or beverage, onto the plane.

I also use a plastic shoe box inside my soft sided luggage... Then I stand everything upright in it on the sink and Have everything right there that I need. Everything stays in it and I refill it when I get home and poof all packed for the next adventure... To the beach, camping, plane, anywhere! :) I have plastic bottles that are bigger than travel sized but smaller than a full sized shampoo/ body wash bottles. I'm a creature of habbit so the shampoo in the shower is always what is packed in the shoebox.

The only thing I take in my carry on is contact lense solution... A sample bottle I got from the doc. The plane really seems to dry out my eyes so I have that ready to remove the contacts if I need to.

thank you for the tips. any suggestions on where to get these plastic type shoeboxes. I like the idea! Thanks again for the info!

another quick paking question about the meds I know that prescriptions have to have the doc label and that there allowed but what about otc? anyone have any tips im talking cough/liquid tylenol/ and pepto :(

thanks

I always just stick my bottles into a big ziplock baggie. I really like the plastic shoebox idea though. It would be convenient to bring home souvies that you don't want smashed too.

We just buy the cheap shampoo & conditioner & stuff. Then, we can leave it there when we leave.

You can pack as many of these in your checked luggage as you want. If you have to carry it on for some reason, the non-prescription liquids would need to adhere to the 3-1-1 rules. SO, that means they would have be in bottles of less than 3 oz and must all fit in the one quart sized baggie that you are allowed per person.

The "per person" part is nice, because you can pack a baggie for each member of your party--meaning kids too! I usually pack one for me, and one for dd that has the OTC meds or whatever didn't fit in my baggie. ;)

I actually kinda like being restricted - it forces me to re-evaluate what I really NEED to take vs. what I normally use. I can get by for a week without hairspray, and with whatever shampoo they sell in travel sizes. I don't pack foundation anymore, or face cream - just use regular travel-size body lotion for the week. I used to find sample size makeup at the stores (mainly foundation and mascara), but haven't seen any in the past few years.
For travel size stuff, whatever's left at the end of the trip just gets tossed before the flight home. More room for souvenirs!! ;)

Here's a follow up question:

Do prescription meds have to been in the Rx labled bottle? I ask because DH takes 2 Rx meds and gets a 90 day supply of each. Do we have to take the huge bottles or can we just put what we need in another container. I would be carrying this on, not checking it.

Thanks!

I asked this on the transport board. In the US, you shouldn't need to have the containers.

I had trouble with my conditioner leaking on the last trip, and even though I put it in a ziplock bag it still was a mess. Much of it got wasted and the stuff isn't cheap. So I decided this trip to mail it and some other toiletries along with our mini boxes of cereal for breakfast. It goes through UPS, it's a snap, and it will be waiting at the front desk when we arrive!

I was told by the airlines that I HAD to have any and all meds in their origional container.Over the counter or scripts... (this was 3 yrs ago) They said that it was a law in the states not just at the airport. I had my pharmacy use the very smallest bottles they could and put labels on. They were happy to help and when a script changes I bring the bottles in and have the label updated or changed. I used to carry my meds in a simple handl labeled container that I love. Advil, benidryl ect and well as precsription meds. That is when I ran into my problem. Now I have travel size everything that I refill. I keep the meds in a small zippered makeup bag... and like my travel bottles I refill them when I get home to be ready to go again!

Zip lock bags saved my day when a bottle of hand lotion opened up inside my backpack one day. I had thankfully had them in ziplock bags. Buy the good bags the off brand ones from the dollar store ripped and was torn easy. If I had not had them inside the bags lotion would be all over my video camera and reg camera.

This is what I was going to suggest--ask the pharmacist if they can give you a labeled, small bottle.

I have also heard that you can use another bottle if you carry a letter from your doctor that lists all of your prescriptions, and dosages. However, if there is some sort of alert that makes them nervous you could end up being held until they could confirm that all of your meds match the letter.

(If you are asking because you are traveling outside the US, the recommendation is that you carry both Px labeled bottles and the doctor's letter--especially if you take any meds that have a street value.)

Nalgene makes small bottles that are great for carrying things like shampoo & conditioner. If they're in checked luggage this is usually fine.
