The song is not about the Revolution. It's about an event during the War of 1812. And tea is at 4 o'clock.

Ooops. My bad.

I think some people took artistic license with a song many feel is sacred at a time when tensions are high. Do I think this will be adopted by the masses? No. Am I offended by it? Not any more than I am offended by some wretched massacared version done in English. I am sure this is not the first time a "re-writing" of the song has occurred, it's just the timing of this version.

On a side not, I really wish our National Anthem was America, the Beautiful, it's a lot easier to sing and I think it is prettier. ;)

I think American Samoa is considering adopting a Samoan-language version of our national anthem. Their "unofficial" anthem is "Amerika Samoa".

Me, I love our national anthem, and what it stands for. Strength in adversity, the ability to outlast our enemies and keep them off. I'm not a big fan of "America, the Beautiful" as our anthem, although I do like it.

I actually thought it was pretty....until the end. How would it go over if I punctuated the National Anthem with "We're White People!"? Probably not so hot.

I don't have a problem if it would have been a literal translation, I don't like that they actually changed the meaning of Key's original poem, and trying to "pass it off" as the National Anthem.

The US has never had an "official" language. It could easily adopt one as many other countries have done. However, even if the official language of the US was English, folks would still have every right to sing any song they wished in whatever language they wished, wouldn't they? We are a free society, based on individual rights, are we not?

Also remember that the US "borrowed" the tune for the National Anthem, it was originally a British drinking song - sure adds dignity, doesn't it? Maybe it is time for a new National Anthem, preserving the words but with a tune everyone can sing, with "authorized" language translations. Remember, since the currently touted Spanish version is not true translation of Key's poem, they are not actually singing the National Anthem, simply borrowing the tune, as we did when we set the words to it.

BTW here are the originally published words to the music of our "National Anthem"

To Anacreon in heaven where he sat in full glee,
A few sons of harmony sent a petition,
That he their inspirer and patron would be,
When this answer arrived from the jolly old Grecian:
Voice, fiddle aud flute, no longer be mute,
I'll lend you my name and inspire you to boot!
And besides I'll instruct you like me to entwine
The myrtle of Venus and Bacchus's vine.

The news through Olympus immediately flew,
When old Thunder pretended to give himself airs,
If these mortals are suffered their scheme to pursue,
The devil a goddess will stay above stairs,
Hark! already they cry, in transports of joy,
A fig for Parnassus, to Rowley's we'll fly,
And there my good fellows, we'll learn to entwine
The myrtle of Venus and Bacchus's vine.

The yellow-haired god, and his nine fusty maids,
To the hill of old Lud will incontinent flee,
Idalia will boast but of tenantless shades,
And the biforked hill a mere desert will be,
My thunder, no fear on't, will soon do its errand,
And, damn me I'll swinge the ringleaders, I warrant
I'll trim the young dogs, for thus daring to twine
The myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's vine.

Apollo rose up and said, "Prythee ne'er quarrel,
Good king of the gods, with my votaries below
Your thunder is useless - then showing his laurel,
Cried, Sic evitabile fulmen, you know!
Then over each head my laurels I'll spread,
So my sons from your crackers no mischief shall dread
Whilst snug in their club-room, they jovially twine
The myrtle of Venus and Bacchus's vine.

Huh? We shouldn't be proud of winning the Revolution? Where would we be now if we didn't? Eating crumpets and drinking tea at three.
Personally I like crumpets and tea. :confused3

Seriously, I don't care for this song either. America the Beautiful and a few other would be much better choices IMO. That's not said due to disrespect for the current song, just that musically I think it's kind of bad and way too hard to sing.

The "fuss" is it's disrespectful. What's the point of singing it in Spanish? The point is, as has been stated before, many of these people have little desire to assimilate to American culture.

EXACTLY!!

Already been answered, but yep, it wasn't about the revolution, but the war of 1812.

And sorry that I feel war is NOT something to be proud of. We did a lousy job of a lot in that war specifically (historically with the battles) and when I think of my country, I'd rather not be boasting about that war sung to the tune of a "beer drinking song" Does not give a good side of the USA at all.

We have far better songs out there that shows the beauty and the goodness of America that we could've chosen.

Of course that's my opinion on the song itself. I still don't think people need to go about changing it. Granted if someone offered to change the whole song completely and make it official for the US, I'd be all for it ;)

The SSB to be a song of patriotism and pride in the United States. I'm a big fan of people expressing those concepts. Showing patriotism is a good thing - no matter what language it is expressed in.

Geez, I hope none of you people sing Silent Night at Christmas, or O Christmas Tree.

Or worse, own a King James version of the Bible if you are Christian (the official book of your religion). Massive translation and word changes there.

Chill, people. Fear doesn't become you.

I'm just waiting for someone to post they don't see anything wrong with it and declare the rest of us racists.

I don't think you're being racists, but I don't see anything wrong with it.

I totally disagree. The national anthem should be the nation's (country, etc) language.

Only in America where PC crap is so out of hand could this even be a possibility.

Here is another thing that makes we want to agree with the hispanic people, and what they are fighting for.. NOT... :furious:

I'm just waiting to see them on monday playing the SSB in spanish with the flag of Mexico waiving over the U.S. flag. :sad2:

I'm Canadian so I know my opinion doesn't count and that's OK. But for those who care to read : Here we have an English and a French version. In the French version, the words are translated from English (the words weren't changed) Some schools alternate between singing it in English and French.

I thinks it's OK to have another anthem in a country's second language :firefight But the words shouldn't be changed

Totally Agree with you. All this is coming from the same US citizens who go on vacations and expect everybody in other countries to speak english to them. Or have lived in other countries and when they go back to the states, can only say words like hello, water and bathroom in the language of the country they have been.

AGAIN CHILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.

By the way Teddy Roosevelt, helped the province of Panama revolt against the Colombian government in order to build the Panama Canal where, when and at the price he wanted it. Talk about respecting other Countries.

Since the song, i.e.the lyrics and the words, was officially designated as the National Anthem of the United States of America by an act of Congress in 1931...these idiots can sing whatever they want. It still won't be the National Anthem. It could be a Britney Spears song sung in Pig Latin for that matter.

Here's a novel idea....how about just learning the freakin language...if you want to sing it as the National Anthem?!?

How do you now they are idiots???

How many language do you know??

Would you consider yourself an idiot, just because you can only speak english ? or Because you will not learn another language???

Just things to consider, before insulting people you do not know. Grow up.
