Yeeeeaaaaahhhhh. This is wrong.
Even though there are some people who are now saying that America does not have an official language, wrong! It's been English for more than a couple centuries now. And the song was written in English to be sung in English. A national anthem of any country should not be changed.

I have no problems with people who want to use their own language in their homes and with their family and friends. But, you should learn to speak in language of the country you are living in. And not try to change the language of everyone else who is already living there.

I say to the Illegal immigrants: Go Home and come back the legal way!! Only then do you have the right to change the laws of this country and it's national anthem.

I really don't think they should change the words of the anthem...
In Canada we have a french and english version of the national anthem--even though many of us, don't have french as our first language----but we live with it--our national anthem is our anthem no matter what language its in.

:rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:
The outrage displayed here is so funny. English is not your official language. You can still sing the anthem in English, nobody will force you to sing it in Spanish. So what's all the fuss about :confused3

NO WAY, yet in the good ol' USA, we'll sing our national anthem in the tongue of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS so they feel more welcome...COME ON!!!

This country is seriously twisted!

Don't you think that this remark is kind of disrespectful to all the LEGAL immigrants who are native speakers of Spanish, too? :rolleyes2

BTW,
the first English speaking people setting foot onto American soil were illegal immigrants, too ;)

If they changed the words, it's NOT the National Anthem. :confused3 I really don't care what language people want to sing it in- but you can't go changing the words!

No, the USA has never had an official language. And the other thing is, they're not asking to have our anthem officially changed to Spanish. Just some Spanish-language music artists are singing it that way. I guess I don't see why I should be offended, but I do think it's extremely odd to make the anthem "more accessible" to people who aren't even citizens. It's still better than Roseann screaming the anthem before a baseball game.

If people were trying to officially change any of the lyrics to another language, I'd absolutely be against that. There are so many immigrants to the USA who speak so many languages, we can't change the anthem to please everyone.

There's an old saying ... when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

This is the USA. Those that come here to live and work on a permanent or extended basis should be expected to assimilate to the way things are here, not try to change things to the way things are back in their country of origin.

If any of us from the US were to move to Germany, China, Mexico or any other country, we wouldn't expect anything to change to suit us.

The US isn't necessarily a melting pot at times, but a crazy quilt of people from various parts of the world. We need a thread to hold us all together, and that thread should be a common language. No, English isn't the legal official language, but it should be. It has been the predominant language for 2 centuries, and little things like this are causing a slow unravelling.

Theodore Roosevelt was amazingly prescient when he said the quote in my signature almost a century ago.

You ought to talk to my family... when in Rome do as the Romans. My in-laws didn't learn English until they moved to the US in the 70s. So sorry, if you move to the US, you better learn the language!

If it is just singing it in another language, that doesn't bother me so much, but to change it to make it feel more "Latin" actually does. I admit, I do not like the song. It's a terrible tune that is hard to sing, and talking about war. Not something I think the US should be proud of... that aside, I still think having it more than a translation to Spanish is definitely wrong. Then again, I also still don't see the point if they are doing that. If you are in the US, speak the language of the people, official or not. There are many states out there with English as the official language. Only one is bilingual with Spanish (New Mexico) and two more are bilingual (Lousiana with French, and Hawaii with Hawaiian). So speak the language that many states have adopted!

And I won't even get started on my thoughts on illegal immigrants.

While we don't "adopt" languages "officially" like, say, facist countries led by crazed dictators might... our founding documents are in English and the song was written in English, is revered, and should remain in English.

You've got to be kidding me!!! That brings a whole new meaning to "poltically correct" !!!!! Personally I like to be politically uncorrect if you know what I mean.

So you'd be ok with the German National Anthem sung in Arabic at one of you state ceremonies? I'm sure it would translate perfectly too.

The "fuss" is it's disrespectful. What's the point of singing it in Spanish? The point is, as has been stated before, many of these people have little desire to assimilate to American culture.

No, they weren't. There was no recognised country (with laws) established at the time they came here.

ETA.

I guess I don't see the point at discussing this with someone from Germany. You're opinion means squat.

Huh? We shouldn't be proud of winning the Revolution? Where would we be now if we didn't? Eating crumpets and drinking tea at three.

Nobody's going to sing "The Star Spangled Banner" in Spanish at state ceremonies. It's just some recording artists who are doing a version of it in Spanish. They're not petitioning the government to have the anthem changed (the law recognizing the anthem doesn't have the words in it, anyway). Get a grip.

The song is not about the Revolution. It's about an event during the War of 1812. And tea is at 4 o'clock.

Get a grip indeed.

I don't care what they're doing it for. It's still wrong. That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

I still have to ask, what's their motive? What's the point? I don't like it when someone (like a rapper or Rosanne) butchers the song while still singing it in English. There are just some things that shouldn't be messesd with. This is one of them.

You're making a mountain out of a molehill, that's all.
