Spaceship Earth to close May 26th

Ugh. I know it needs it but I was hoping they'd keep it up until Remy's is open for traffic flow at least. There's already too much construction in Future World. I'm at the point where we'll probably just skip Epcot this trip.

There's a lot of speculation out there now that Remy's will be open before this goes down.

We are just missing it by a couple days - does anyone know if beginnings of ride refurbs get postponed or delayed very often? Ever?

As long as I still get to thank some Phoenicians and smell Rome burning I’m cool with whatever they do to it! I’m just glad we’re getting in at the last minute, I was terrified it would happen before the start of our May trip. Bad enough I only have 2 days of Big Thunder time. :sad1:
I'm with you, but I can't imagine them keeping the smoke smell. You can smell it practically all the way to the security check.
Here's a spoiler to a scene I hope they do fix. Don't click if you don't want to spoil the magic!
The scene with the HP garage has the wrong era of car in front of it. The car is from the 70's, but HP was founded in a garage in the late 30's.

I think this is the delay. Horizons was SBNO, then re-opened for a bit - then got torn down. Really best just to rip the band-aid off and get working.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm all for a significant refurb of this ride. We rode it a couple of years ago and it just didn't have the same magic as I remembered as a kid. Super excited for some new scenes and a better descent experience.
The original ride had an emotional arc that the redone ride doesn't come close to. You'd get to the top and see the stars above you and--just wow. Also, I admit that I miss the chariot. But I'm still going to ride this version at least once more on our upcoming trip.

Surprised to see the lack of love for SE. It is nothing like it used to be, but still such a great and unique ride.
I don't think that's it. In fact, I am really disappointed I won't get to ride it this summer. There is no denying it needs work though, and it's not the first time Disney has overhauled the ride. I am confident I will love the new version as much as I have loved ALL of the old versions.

I am glad we waited in a long-ish line for it last month. DH could have done without the wait, but I was aware it could be closing soon. It’s probably due for a revamp, but I’ll miss it on our trip this summer.

Do we think it will be completed by 2021? We will be there Dec 2020, maybe it might be up and running by then, or is this a big, big job?

Someone asked on the announcement page on the Disney website and a response suggested they are hoping for the 2021 50th anniversary celebrations but more more likely will be ready for 2022 and the 40th Epcot celebration.

Apparently this is a huge undertaking.

Well - you know what that means . . . trip planning for 2022!

Seriously, there is less and less for us to do outside of the World Showcase next trip. I think a quick stop at the Land Pavilion, and then we will be done with that side of Epcot.

I hope the upgrades will be fabulous! And still a family oriented ride.

I just hope they don’t modernize it to much with screens and digital anamatronics. Then again I’m sure they will to make it current

Will the new ride START with the Bill Gates/Steve Jobs scene and continue on from there? hehe
:tilt:

The garage scene is not about the founding of Hewlett-Packard in the late 30s, it is about the development of the personal computer in the 60/70s, by "young people" at multiple companies including HP and Apple. So the car is appropriate there, just like the Fleetwood Mac poster, because it is the 1970s.

I agree (I do usually hit Mission Space). I was going to finally stay at the Poly for my birthday trip, but looking at everything disappearing, it's becoming more and more obvious that I'll spend most of my time at Animal Kingdom and changed to AKL.

Love it now. It’s always a must do at least a couple times. Looking forward to the new version. Time marches on! Can’t wait.

We will be there in June and are so bummed to hear that we are missing it. We knew it was closing but were hopeful it would be after our trip. I admit, a few tears were shed in my house when the date was announced. :(

If they take out the park of the computer room with the big spools of information and old printers I will be really sad. My dad used to work in computer rooms like that and I used to love going to visit him and loved those rooms with their rows and rows of computer reels and air conditioned floors. It makes me smile every time I go through that part of the ride and I tell my kids everytime that Grandpa used to work in a place like this. He is 86 now and when he is gone I would love to still be able to move through that part of SE and remember those amazing times with him.

The scientist in that scene with the giant fro is my favorite animatronic in all of WDW and I would honestly be devastated to see her gone.
