space shuttle

We went to Cocoa Beach for a few days when they were SUPPOSE to launch. They were suppose to lauch in 2 days so we drove over to Magic Kingdom the next day, next thing we knew while enjoying a Churro we looked up and there it was! They launched a day early due to the weather. This was at least 10 years ago though! But, we were so upset since we wanted to be at Cocoa Beach to see the launch not MK. Oh well, it was still cool!!

We saw one a few years back, didn't know it was supposed to happen. But once it did we looked up and watched it along with everyone else that was by us. I remember exactly where we were. We were in Epcot on the bridge right by Japan. We had a perfect view, it was cool. I wouldn't base my entire day around it but know the time and when it's supposed to launch go find an open space and look up.

to be honest the space shuttles shouldn't be used anymore. they are now death traps and are years beyond their shelf life. I'm glad to hear theyare being retired soon.

They aren't any less safe than they were 20 years ago - probably more so, and they aren't even close to the number of launches they were designed for.
In any case, the major reason for the shuttles' failure to meet expected safety and performance goals because the US Air Force had strict demands for the orbiters' design so that they could be used for military purposes, which they were rarely (if ever) used for. They were (and still are) mostly a prestige project, compromised by too many tradeoffs in the design phase. Still, I'll miss them :(

Our first time seeing a launch was a surprise. We were having lunch at the Rose & Crown in Epcot (England) out by the water, when all of the waiters and waitresses began to crowd around our table and point towards the Mexico Pavilion. We were confused and asked what they were pointing at. One of the young ladies (from England) told us about the Space Shuttle Launch. She told us that it was really exciting for all of her fellow employees who were British, since none of them had ever seen a launch (well, we're from the US, and we hadn't either). It was a special moment, and I was fortunate enough to capture it on videotape.

On my DS's 5th BDay we drove from WDW towards Cape Canaveral and stopped along the highway somewhere near I95 and the Challenger Memorial Highway. I think we were aboout 10 mi from launch. It was an amazing sight! But it is gone in a flash. I'm glad we did it.

When there are night launches on ISS missions, I go outside and search the SW sky. At about 7 mins. past launch, you can see the shuttle fly by CT. (I want a 7 min. flight from CT to FL!)

If you ever get a chance to see one from KSC, you really should do so. It is amazing that these heroes will be in space in less than 10 minutes from launch! I was lucky enough to get to see Discovery (STS-105) launch from KSC when I was a Space Camp Instructor in 2001. It was unbelievable!

We were in WDW last summer when Discovery was supposed to go back up, but due to delays, we missed the launch! However, I did see Disco pass over our house (with the ISS trailing by about 10 minutes) on it's last orbit here in St. Louis last summer!

Being a teacher and a space-junkie, there is nothing better than WDW and KSC!!

We were standing by the lagoon in Germany at World Showcase and saw the shuttle launch that had John Glenn. Impressive for sure!

That's so cool that you were a Space Camp Instructor and got to see a launch then!

My dad was a space-junkie too having a keen interest because he had designed shuttle components and various parts that actually went up into space. A year or two before he died he was visiting the KSC area during a launch time and he got himself an entry into the secure area to watch. It was one of the highlights of his life, lemme tell ya!

This post is bringing out the space junkie in me!!
